And with Andrew Scott,
he is great
as is Olivia Colman

I don’t think there is enough time in the two episodes left for there to be any kind of neat resolution, let alone a happy ending. I’m expecting some kind of explosive air clearing at the wedding with everyone involved left pissed off but with Fleabag, Claire, and poss their dad and the priest, ready to start making better choices...

iwantatattoo · 30/03/2019 12:15

I think that she needs to face her past before she can move on with her life. She betrayed her friend by sleeping with her bf and the consequences were catastrophic, but she hasn't really dealt with that as it's just too painful. Her sexy priest also represents confession and absolution which she is drawn to?

GottaGetUp · 30/03/2019 12:25

But actually, thinking about it, I doubt PWB would write anything expected so scratch my last post

merrymouse · 30/03/2019 12:34

I might have missed something, but I don’t think FB has been turning down suitable relationship choices? Her friendship with Boo ended with a tragedy because of flawed choices, but I don’t think the relationship itself was a bad choice.

LassOfFyvie · 30/03/2019 12:44

I'm afraid series 2 has been downhill all the way from episode 1. Episode one was brilliant.

The episode with Kristen Scott-Thomas was dire. The bit about dropping the expensive prize after being told not to touch it was so hackneyed and unoriginal.

Kristen Scott-Thomas' awful monologue about the pain of being a woman- ditto.

The 4th episode was just annoying from start to finish. The sexy priest being tempted trope is dismally unoriginal too.

GottaGetUp · 30/03/2019 12:44

That’s true, we’ve just seen her with a succession of losers on offer. And she hasn’t chosen to stick with any of them, so really she’s making good choices 😄.

But she has chosen to pursue the priest, which is not a good idea...

GottaGetUp · 30/03/2019 12:46

I think what was original about the prize was the speed at which it went from warning to dropping to resolution. Plenty of terrible sitcoms would hang a while episode on that sequence of events.

merrymouse · 30/03/2019 13:11

And she hasn’t chosen to stick with any of them, so really she’s making good choices

Absolutely!

Isitmybathtimeyet · 30/03/2019 13:15

I thought the dropping the prize was an in-joke at how cliched it was.

She did of course have 'Harry' who was a stereotypical 'perfect' man who she treated with contempt but assumed would stick around. But of course he wasn't perfect for her at all. It was the kind of thing you could imagine her family watching and judging her for.

I rewatched the episode on the back of this thread. I realised the bit I found saddest is how different her relationship with her father is now from the day of the funeral. Remembering the events of the last S1 episode, how awful that they've got to this?

Also on rewatch the kneel bit of course came after her speech about wanting to be told what to do. But it's also what a priest tells someone in a confessional. It's all very... messy. I do agree about the drinking though.

merrymouse · 30/03/2019 13:22

‘Good girl’ Clare has made a far worse relationship choice with her marriage. Not clear exactly what is going on with Klare and Clare, but it’s implied that they they are having an affair which is making Clare happier.

Obv only 2 PWB TV shows, but she doesn’t seem to write about characters finding happiness by acting sensibly.

GottaGetUp · 30/03/2019 14:06

To be clear, I absolutely include Harry in the succession of losers...

SoHotADragonRetired · 30/03/2019 14:31

You know, one thing I kind of don't like about the show is all the jokes about Harry being a woman because he's kind of emotionally needy/more into Fleabag than she is into him.

GottaGetUp · 30/03/2019 14:40

it’s been a while since I watched series one, but I don’t remember Harry being called a woman? When he turned up in the funeral flash back he was so tuned in to his own emotions he was completely oblivious to hers, hence loser.

SoHotADragonRetired · 30/03/2019 15:02

There are lots of Harry-is-a-woman visual jokes in S1 (his towel turban, the fact that the mould of him at the sexhibition doesn't have a penis) but the entire scene between him and FB at the church fete in S2 is that joke, including him referring to himself as Fleabag's ex-girlfriend.

GottaGetUp · 30/03/2019 15:09

Oh yeah, that’s not great 😕

NopeNi · 30/03/2019 15:14

Isn't that part of it all though? (Her hating femininity and feelings and deriding them?) She's not really a feminist yet, and she's an unreliable narrator.

RuffleCrow · 30/03/2019 17:59

Yes, i went through a similar phase in my early twenties - even had a 'Harry' to torment. I think it's all part of the acting out of negative 'masculine' roles that some women go through before they discover feminism proper.

MissFitton · 30/03/2019 19:55

Late to this thread and loving this series. The bit which really resonated with me with the 'being told what to do' as a response to, as a single woman, having to be responsible for every fucking facet of your life. I saw it as a heads up to how relentlessly exhausting that is and how, some times, you just want someone to tell you how to be.

It turns out I'd also like an extremely erotic encounter with Andrew Scott regardless of whether or not this is a good or bad thing. Who knew? Grin

ColdNeverBotheredMeAnyway · 30/03/2019 21:51

Ooh can I join? I utterly love Fleabag, it's a visual delight.

I too found the final scene with Hot Priest uncomfortable and unsettling. I hope they both make good choices there... it made me a bit emotional when he 'saw' her breaking the 4th wall. He 'sees' her like no one else has, she needs to keep him around.

BertrandRussell · 30/03/2019 21:52

I can hardly bring myself to say “fleabag” I hate it when women on here give themselves disparaging usernames.....

diddl · 30/03/2019 22:21

"I'm afraid series 2 has been downhill all the way from episode 1. Episode one was brilliant. "

I'm so glad it's not just me who thinks that.

RuffleCrow · 30/03/2019 23:04

If you think about it - hp also talks to a 4th wall: God. Only FB is polite enough not to make a big thing about it.

Isitmybathtimeyet · 31/03/2019 08:19

I did notice in the funeral flashback that after Godmother had oozed over the sisters in the church, they both looked at us.

ThanksItHasPockets · 31/03/2019 09:06

No, I don’t think they do. They look past the camera at her as she walks away. There are no asides in the flashbacks.

BeautifulName · 31/03/2019 12:55

Watching it again the priest actor absolutely nails functional alcoholic. The cast are amazing.
