I'm guessing that Pil-Ju is actually the uncle's illegitimate son hence the post-funeral river crossing. Jang Hyuk definitely rocks the silent brooding, he's a much better actor than I thought.
Married with 3 children to a Pilates instructor in real life and was a former professional Taekwondo athlete and also does Jeet Kune Do (had to look that up it's a martial art influenced by Bruce Lee)

The martial arts training would explain his very convincing fight scenes in this & the Pilates instructor wife his awesome abs in Destiny. He is very poised and has terrific posture in all the standing around scenes in this, of which there are many.

He’s a rapper too, though perhaps in a similar vein to So Ji Sub. Will check out spotify and YouTube later.

This explains the inexplicably laboured g.o.d. cameo in Destiny.

I am now struggling to keep up with a slew of secret DNA tests and who’s the daddy? It’s like that game that street magicians do with the ball and 3 cups.

Just rolled into ep 8. It’s building slowly to a grim fight to the death, metaphorically speaking. If it was a David Attenborough show, Director Jang (widow) and Kang Pil-Ju would be two monitor lizards circling each other before going in for the kill. It has all the hallmarks of a slow-mo 10 car pile-up and I’m LOVING it. Nippy it ain’t. Grimly compelling and brilliantly acted? Oh yes! I can see why it garnered critical acclaim and Jang Hyuk was nominated for a Baeksang Arts Awards Best Actor award for it. He’s chewing up the scenery. I’m so glad I fell into this, because I would have written him off as a decent actor if I’d only watched Destiny, even though he had good bits in that too.

SLS = Second Lead Syndrome where the FL is too thick to realise how much better the 2ML is

Money Flower is horribly addictive. There’s a bit the night of the wedding where I think Pil-Ju may have had to properly abase himself to maintain his cover. 😕
