A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, but the more seriously addicted have other sources, including dramabus.

Previous Threads, with discussion of what we’ve enjoyed and what to avoid:

Here are some suggestions for shows that we’ve enjoyed - those marked with an asterisk are more uniformly loved:

Because This Is My First Life (Viki)*
Black (Netflix)*
Chicago Typewriter (Viki)*
Don’t Dare to Dream (Netflix, or as Jealousy Incarnate on Viki)*
Fight For My Way (Drama bus)*
Healer (Netflix)*
His Master’s Sun (Netflix)
I Hear Your Voice (Netflix /Viki)
Last Train to Busan - film (Amazon Prime)
Live (Netflix)
Love from a Star (netflix)*
Pinocchio (netflix)
Prison Playbook (Netflix)*
Goblin (Viki)
She Was Pretty (Dramabus/Netflix)
Something in the Rain (Netflix)
Strong Girl Bong Soon (Netflix)
Suspicious Partner (netflix)*
W (Viki & Netflix)*
What’s Up With Secretary Kim (Viki)*
While You Were Sleeping (viki)

We have some lovely occasional posters who have lived in Korea, are Korean or have Korean partners/family members who pop in from time to time to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references.

If you want to know your oppas from your unnis try this helpful guide to Korean terms of address and honorifics.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, film and kpop when the mood takes us. To get to grips with the lingo, try dramaloveaddicts.proboards.com/thread/24/korean-word-day?page=1

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

Oh yes, and cooking/food. Lots of cooking. 😁

I'm in the middle of a national disaster! D-day on viki!... Earthquakes! Building collapse!... Dust everywhere and earnest doctors and nurses trying to save patients and hospital administrators trying to keep the riff raff out! 😱... Not sure if I'm going to stick it but it'll do for this evening... Lots of skippitydoodah-ing!

boatyardblues · 14/02/2019 21:28

Series or film, Bea? Sounds stressful if it’s attenuated over 16+ hours. Grin

OP posts:
Bea · 14/02/2019 22:00

Series! Lots of angst and arguing about who should be saved!!

boatyardblues · 14/02/2019 22:08

The pretty ones, of course! Especially the oppas. Simples. 😆

One of the things I like about Temperature of Love is that both ML and FL are both independently sassing the super-wealthy, odd VVIP (who I’m assuming is 2ML) in a professional context. Also, he seems to like their sass, which is giving some great sardonic exchanges.

There’s Soompi article (front page) about CJH not appearing in the last episodes of The Last Empress due to a scheduling clash - apparently the network has extended the run by 2 episodes to 52.

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 15/02/2019 08:13

The reason CJH can’t participate is because he’s attending a fan event in Taiwan. There’s still time to book your flights, Betty. 😁

OP posts:
bettys · 15/02/2019 08:20

🛩 😂
What a bugger though! That does not bode well for the ending. Even if he filmed his last scenes already it says he’s not appearing. How can they end it without him? It’s like Cheese in the Trap
That’s the problem with filming as they air

boatyardblues · 15/02/2019 08:22

It’s actually 4 additional episodes they tacked on, which often has the effect of diluting or ruining the narrative arc.

OP posts:
bettys · 15/02/2019 08:49

I agree. So presumably no miracle operation & happy ending.

Reading on instagram it seems they decided to extend without considering his schedule.

I may have to adopt Bea's tactic of waiting until a drama has finished airing as this is sooooo disappointing. Not that I'm over-invested or anything.....

boatyardblues · 15/02/2019 12:12

I don’t know if I’m tiring of kdrama, but I’ve found it much harder to settle to anything this week. I suspect my patience for poorly conceived, scripted and acted kdrama has waned. AmI and some of our other Korean/Korea-located poster are right that there’s a lot of really cheesy content out tgere.

OP posts:
bettys · 15/02/2019 12:21

I haven't settled on one either this week, tried Temperature of Love which was ok but not compulsive. Maybe we've watched all the good ones? Although there's always that hope that I might stumble across another gem like Because TIMFL

I have watched up to ep 48 of Empress now and CJH's story is obv. going to have finish off-screen, or possibly in flashback, which is very disappointing. The Emperor's dream sequence may have been filmed as a possible ending until the run got extended. Otherwise it hasn't been made clear what happened at Chongeum island. Feel rather let-down.

boatyardblues · 15/02/2019 12:23

I realised that I haven’t watched Stranger past ep 2, so restarting that and persevering will be my next move.

OP posts:
bettys · 15/02/2019 12:26

See, I think Stranger is classy. My first ever kdrama.

boatyardblues · 15/02/2019 12:46

It was a bit slow & serious and I was in the mood for froth at that point. I now find my tastes increasingly turning to slow, thoughtful and high quality kdrama.

OP posts:
Bea · 15/02/2019 15:29

My strange hero hits the froth button with good plot and not completely ridiculous!... But lots of light and laughs! Give that a try Boatyard...
I'm enjoying dday... Not binging completely but good dose of angst!... Though I cheated and read some recaps and there's aspects of the storyline which are going to play out which I'm NOT happy with!!, 😡😡😡

Bea · 15/02/2019 15:30

Your Empress quandary sounds infuriating! I would be soooo Cross! That's a lot of eps to sit through and your fave not appearing at the end!! 😡😱

bettys · 15/02/2019 15:40

Exactly!!! They’ve pissed me right off!!😡😡😡

bettys · 15/02/2019 15:43

Mind you that’s why I read spoilers, it prepares you for the worst 😉
I was about to start watching Fated to Love You which also has CJH & Jang Nara but I read a spoiler so may or may not now

bettys · 15/02/2019 22:44

I'm still really grumpy about The Last Empress so I have been watching Photo People in Japan (Viki) which although not as lifestyley relaxing as Coffee Friends ( Yoo Yeon Seok and Son Ho Jun run a cafe in a tangerine farm on Jeju Island) goes quite nicely with a large glass of red wine and has the rather beautiful Jaejoong in it.

boatyardblues · 15/02/2019 22:52

Just watched the last 3 episodes of Russian Doll with DH. Back to Temperature of Love now.

Coffee Friends sounds relaxing.

OP posts:
bettys · 15/02/2019 23:14

Coffee Friends is lovely (dramafast) . Nice music, gentle pace, nothing much happens, great shots of food, and you get the feeling that they are nice people.

Is Russian Doll worth watching? I have been watching Das Boot with DH but tonight it finished on a cliffhanger at episode 8 ffs - this is where I would normally say this is why I like one-season kdramas but after the whole Empress debacle & no lovely closure for CJH I am disgruntled.

boatyardblues · 15/02/2019 23:15

I’m liking the cut of Kim Jae-Wook’s jib in Temperature of Love. His character is pretty arrogant and a bit of a cock, but he wears his rich businessman suits well and his sparking off FL’s sass works well.

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 15/02/2019 23:16

Another >6ft lead, obvs.
