A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, but the more seriously addicted have other sources, including dramabus.

Previous Threads, with discussion of what we’ve enjoyed and what to avoid:

Thread 2

Here are some suggestions for shows that we’ve enjoyed - those marked with an asterisk are more uniformly loved:

Because This Is My First Life (Viki)*
Black (Netflix)*
Chicago Typewriter (Viki)*
Don’t Dare to Dream (Netflix, or as Jealousy Incarnate on Viki)*
Fight For My Way (Drama bus)*
Healer (Netflix)*
His Master’s Sun (Netflix)
I Hear Your Voice (Netflix /Viki)
Last Train to Busan - film (Amazon Prime)
Live (Netflix)
Love from a Star (netflix)*
Pinocchio (netflix)
Prison Playbook (Netflix)*
Goblin (Viki)
She Was Pretty (Dramabus/Netflix)
Something in the Rain (Netflix)
Strong Girl Bong Soon (Netflix)
Suspicious Partner (netflix)*
W (Viki & Netflix)*
What’s Up With Secretary Kim (Viki)*
While You Were Sleeping (viki)

We have some lovely occasional posters who have lived in Korea, are Korean or have Korean partners/family members who pop in from time to time to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references.

If you want to know your oppas from your unnis try this helpful guide to Korean terms of address and honorifics.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, film and kpop when the mood takes us. To get to grips with the lingo, try dramaloveaddicts.proboards.com/thread/24/korean-word-day?page=1

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

Oh and Kingdom on Netflix if you like zombies!

bettys · 09/02/2019 22:08

Has anyone been watching Coffee Friends?

I've just dipped into it (on dramafast) and it's really sweet. Goo Dong-Mae Yoo Yeon-Seok and Son Ho Jun open a cafe on a tangerine farm on Jeju Island (for charity) and invite their celebrity friends to be part-timers. There's nice music, lovely scenery, cooking, & handsome men making coffee. Oh and nice knitwear.

Just have to say I am really enjoying Romance is a Bonus Book. I like the gentle pace, little bits of humour and all the interesting stuff about publishing. Makes me want to do something with all the sad books that don't get read. I made a Christmas wreath out of books one year

I like it too. FL is really likeable and I love the slow pace.

Also, i am back from a big night out drunk and going to sit with kdrama and a cuppa for a bit until i feel less drunk.

You have no idea how many corrections i had to make to my last ppost. Nearky every word was wrong.

Anyone seen netflixs KINGDOM yet? Been a kdrama fan for many years, also partial to a good zombie movie, think this does both excellently well. Only gripe was the abrupt ending, I am too used to the 16 episode dramas lol.

bettys · 10/02/2019 00:05

I’m glad to know it’s not just me that comes home drunk & has to kdrama before bed.

Quite like nearky as a word (pronounced nurky)

bettys · 10/02/2019 00:08

Solstice888 agree 100%!! Waaaaay too short it had only just got going! Wanted more handsome men with swords in burning fields slaying zombies

boatyardblues · 10/02/2019 00:12

Watching Encounter. The slooow pace is ideal for alcohol-impaired subtitle reading.

(Quite impressed i’m making so much sens “ - expectcting mother of alm hangovers tmrw after what i drank.)

KLAXON Boatyardblues!!
The Beauty Inside with Lee Min-Ki is now on Viki. Not all subtitles ready yet though.

boatyardblues · 10/02/2019 00:25

Excellent.

I want to put a shout out for the top notch animation on the Encounter credits. Really classy and sweet.

I loved Kingdom - really liked the cowardly magistrate who was in love with the physician (that scene where he pledges his eternal protection was so sweet on his part because you could see he was sincere, but she wasn’t having any of it and started asking him embarrassing medical questions about his willy).

Also thought the other magistrate friend of his (dressed all in white) looked like Barry from The Chuckle Brothers. Have yet to come up with a suitable pun. We have been calling it ‘Game of Kingdoms’ in our house, for obvious reasons. Anyone want to join me in guessing who the mole is that was alluded to towards the end?

I still heartily recommend Korean Odyssey as my all time favourite. I actively miss it.

Also I meant to say this a while back, but Fight For My Way IS still on Viki, I saw it there yesterday. I know a few threads back people thought it had been taken off but it hasn’t.

Solstice888 · 10/02/2019 00:54

I think the mole has to be his friend that has been with him from the start (the crown prince protector guy) as his wife is still back at the palace so he knows she is at risk.

Hahaha chuckle brother? I have to re-watch to see who you mean now.

Willy bit was definitely good. Made me wonder if she did it deliberately, knowing that if she embarrassed him like that he would lose interest in her. Could have been a clever ploy.

HeechulMyOppa · 10/02/2019 02:33

Solstice Yeah, that was my thought, but I really really don’t want it to be true because I really like that character. And yeah, she totally knew what she was doing when she started talking about his willy - trying to play innocent and make him feel awkward so he’d back off. I think he’s adorable. Also I’m learning Korean and I knew the word ‘jeoji’ (penis) so when he muttered it back in embarrassment it delighted me for some reason.

Solstice888 · 10/02/2019 02:51

Lol it's so fun when you recognise random words and phrases without having to read the subtitles :)

boatyardblues · 10/02/2019 07:26

Good to know you are learning all the useful words, Heechul. Wink Are you paying for Viki in GBP? I ask because one of Betty’s early viki links was a USD subscription & I can see in the app that there’s a lot of content which is on viki, but restricted/unavailable to UK subscribers.

bettys · 10/02/2019 09:16

I wish I could speak Korean
It would also help with casual/formal speech. Also read in an article that there was some criticism over Bae Doona's acting in Kingdom over the way she spoke (too high-class?) but of course I couldn't pick up on it.

Fight My Way is on Viki but unavailable in UK. I paid in $ I think as that was the amount stated but it got changed into £ obv.

boatyardblues · 10/02/2019 10:25

I couldn’t find Fight My Way using the search function on UK viki, but found it through PSJ’s profile. It’s designated ‘restricted’ and not available here.

Park Bo Gum’s character in Encounter is really lovely. I know it had mixed reviews, but I like that it’s a simple (but complicated) love story. I’m totally rooting for the two leads.

boatyardblues · 10/02/2019 10:48

I have just seen something amazing* on Encounter. FL has a fridge with a partially glazed door in her kitchen. She lightly knocked on the door and the lights inside came on, revealing the contents of the drinks section without having to open the door. I want one! What a brilliant idea.

  • Yes, I know it’s hardly discovery of the Higgs Boson, but it’s clever AND useful tech.

I have stupidly started Devilish Joy on Viki which now means that I am watching FOUR dramas with Choi Jin-Hyuk in.

Devilish Joy, P&P, Tunnel & The Last Empress

Waiting for ep 6 of Romance is a Bonus Book to land

Sounds great - although drink never stays long enough in my fridge for me to forget what's in there Wine Wink

Bea · 10/02/2019 16:18

P&P... Finished! Ending?!.... A bit rubbish! Too quick! Not long enough epilogue... Too many questions... Booooo! Quite unsatisfactory! Wanted to see everyone get their comeuppance and their happy ending!... And... Mr gu does not suit hair swept back!
Am I wrong!?.... 😡

Bea · 10/02/2019 16:19

20 eps I say through!...where was lovely Kang Soo last happy scene?... Mr yoo retired! Mr Lee and Miss Yoo wedding?... Did Mr gu go to jail?... Granny and chan?... Dirt bag reconciled?... Gah!! 😡
