A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, but the more seriously addicted have other sources, including dramabus.

Here are some suggestions for shows that we’ve enjoyed - those marked with an asterisk are more uniformly loved:

Because This Is My First Life (Viki)*
Black (Netflix)*
Chicago Typewriter (Viki)*
Don’t Dare to Dream (Netflix, or as Jealousy Incarnate on Viki)*
Fight For My Way (Drama bus)*
Healer (Netflix)*
His Master’s Sun (Netflix)
I Hear Your Voice (Netflix /Viki)
Last Train to Busan - film (Amazon Prime)
Live (Netflix)
Love from a Star (netflix)*
Pinocchio (netflix)
Prison Playbook (Netflix)*
Goblin (Viki)
She Was Pretty (Dramabus/Netflix)
Something in the Rain (Netflix)
Strong Girl Bong Soon (Netflix)
Suspicious Partner (netflix)*
W (Viki & Netflix)*
What’s Up With Secretary Kim (Viki)*
While You Were Sleeping (viki)

We have some lovely occasional posters who have lived in Korea, are Korean or have Korean partners/family members who pop in from time to time to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references.

If you want to know your oppas from your unnis try this helpful guide to Korean terms of address and honorifics.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, film and kpop when the mood takes us. To get to grips with the lingo, try dramaloveaddicts.proboards.com/thread/24/korean-word-day?page=1

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

Oi Bea Vice chairman is in town!

boatyardblues · 08/02/2019 08:43

Knock yourselves out ladies. I won’t be stirring myself from the sleepy provinces.

At the risk of getting boring, Encounter has started beautifully. I even had to watch a bit over breakfast. 😊

The reviews were a bit mixed, let us know how it continues, it sounds like a good weekend binge

boatyardblues · 08/02/2019 09:00

I can see it wouldn’t suit viewers who love madcap, cutesy kdrama “melo”, but I like a slower burn with lovely cinematography and lingering glances. Both leads are likeable and relateable in their own way.

Bettys!!.... Squeeeeeeel.!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Bettys! Are you up for a bit of stalking!... Must be London??

Bea · 08/02/2019 13:04

A photo shoot according to twitter!! 😍

bettys · 08/02/2019 13:20

I was in London last night & didn’t spit him 😡

Bea · 08/02/2019 17:26

Bettys... Maybe it's a good job you don't see him as you that would have been rather unpleasant for lovely Vice Chairman! 😂😂😂😂

bettys · 08/02/2019 17:49

Arf I meant spot!!
Anyway I'm spiralling on CJH so even though subs STILL aren't up for ep 44 of Last Empress there's still Prosecutor Gu and Tunnel and maybe a bit of Devilish Joy.

boatyardblues · 08/02/2019 19:02

Encounter starts in Cuba, so I’m enjoying all the incidental Cuban music which Viki has thoughtfully subtitled too. Grin

I’m starting to think marrying a chaebol heir is not all its cooked up to be. This poor FL is many years divorced and still she has such limited autonomy. 😞

boatyardblues · 08/02/2019 20:04

Ex-MIL in this is like a mafioso capo.

OP posts:
bettys · 08/02/2019 20:32

Quite refreshing that there's no chaebols in sight in either P&P or Tunnel.

boatyardblues · 08/02/2019 20:35

Quite. I think being part of a chaebol family is like being a rock star, royal or famous actress: great on paper to be “living the dream,” but a chore and very limiting in practice.

Ep14 P&P and I'm really really loathing Mr Mun (Ian mcshane!)... He just makes my skin crawl!.. The way he chews gum... Barges in a room... Shouts and bullies... I suppose its good acting and writing... But I just hate him! I just want to fast forward all his scenes!!... He'd better get a good ending!! 😡😡😡😡

boatyardblues · 08/02/2019 21:51

But Bea... Choi Jin Hyuk. Ian McShane is there to make CJH even more enjoyable to watch. He’s the rough to CJH’s smooth. And don’t forget Lee Tae-Hwan.

Encounter is slooooow. I can see why it would have haterz, but I like it. The pacing and general mood reminds me of Because This Is My First Kife.

boatyardblues · 08/02/2019 21:53

Life, obvs.

OP posts:
Bea · 08/02/2019 22:03

Oh I know! He's there to be spectacularly bad... But... I don't understand why they aren't shouting back at him! Is hierarchy soooo imp in the Korean workplace!!? 😡

boatyardblues · 08/02/2019 22:06

Yes, I think so. Deference to seniority seems to be “a thing.” I was interested to read that English > Korean translators struggle with the lack of honorifics and relational terms in English because it makes it hard to convey the nature of the relationships to Koreean readers.

bettys · 08/02/2019 22:24

I have to confess I’ve been ffwding the Ian McShane bits to get to the CJH bits

bettys · 08/02/2019 22:28

Hum yes interesting, I can’t think of anything other than sir or maybe ma’am as honorifics....and certainly not used much in the workplace as everyone mostly gets called by name not title

Bea · 08/02/2019 22:32

Bettys! The Queen of dodgy websites and ffwding! 😂😂😂
