Glitterball Shiny new thread.

OP posts:
mydogisthebest · 11/12/2018 08:41

I really liked Stacey at the beginning and said to DH that I thought she may well win. I like Kevin and it would be nice for him to win as it will be his 5th time in the final.

I have though, over the weeks, slowly gone off Stacey. I am not even sure why. She obviously loves dancing and is doing so well for a complete beginner. I do hate her shrieking though and that grabbing at Claudia's head is downright weird. She irritates me more each week.

I love Faye and have enjoyed almost all her dances. I would love to see her win but I really don't think she will.

Ashley is the best dancer but her dances just leave me cold. I wouldn't mind if she won though although that seems as likely as me becoming a super model!

All 3 women I think would be worthy winners. The only finalist who wouldn't is Joe. I like him. He seems friendly, genuine and nice but he is not a particularly good dancer.

From where he started he has improved and, for me, a couple of his dances have been good but the last 3 weeks they have really been pretty bad. That street dance disaster and the really awful AT!

I could not believe that Shirley said on ITT that she thought the semi final was the best ever. It really wasn't I was disappointed in Joe and Lauren's dances. The standard should have been much higher in a semi and was in previous years

Samcro · 11/12/2018 08:47

part of the problem imo is how the judges score. darcey gave Ashley 10, yet she had said something about her arm being wrong. so how can it then be a 10?
I don't know much about dance, some dances just do nothing for me (who ever does them) like the salsa.
I am sure I am not alone in voting for the person I enjoy the most.

Clawdy · 11/12/2018 08:56

I can see what people mean about Ashley deserving to win, but in the end, we will all vote for our favourite person. Who's going to vote for the technically perfect dancer if they haven't warmed to them? As someone said upthread, it's an entertainment show, for a Saturday night's fun viewing each week.

SoupDragon · 11/12/2018 09:20

I don't remember people calling out the spite towards Alexandra Burke last year.

ppeatfruit · 11/12/2018 09:27

There were some who tried Soup .

SoupDragon · 11/12/2018 09:51

Not to this degree. She lost her mum just before strictly started and was castigated for being emotional- in fact I think it was labelled "false".

SoupDragon · 11/12/2018 09:52

Thinking about it, I always end up leaving the Strictly threads or posting far less eventually.

GodrestyemerrySchadenfreud · 11/12/2018 09:58

The show is as much about ringers as it is journeys. It wouldn’t work without the mix

Dead right!

Ashley is the best dancer but her dances just leave me cold

I agree with this - there is something missing (to me) and I can't put my finger on it. I didn't like her at the start - I considered here insincere - but as time has gone on I have begun to feel that this may be a cultural thing - American and British responses to the situation may be different. I don't think the producers help by encouraging the competitors to drag their Nans, poorly kittens, cutsie nephews/neices into the mix - it's cloying and irritating. I liked Stacey in the beginning but now find her a PITA, but one thing I loved about her, was that when she tore her rib muscles, and Tess tried to make a big production of it, she effectively said "shut up" about it - deflected the "oooooh, poor you - I bet that really hurts" comments right at the start.

I'd like Faye to win, but I think Joe will. I've nothing against him, but he is rubbish, and it is the judges fault that he has got yo this point because they overmarked and overpraised him from the start.

I wouldn't mind either Ashley or stacey winning, but --when== if Joe carries off that trophy, I will be pissed.

I think this series has been a bit of a car-crash: sordid Snean and his slimey shenanigans; vicious Vick and her vindictive vitriol; unalliterative Danny and his snidey sour-grapes; snotty Susannah and her obvious desire to be out as fast as possible and just grab her fee on the way; Lauren and Joe kept in when Charles (whom I didn't much like, but who could dance) went out; awful show-dances most of the time; rubbish costumes; terrible music (both choices and performance); stupid, unnecessary props; dancing content disappearing for the sake of showiness; Tess becoming even more patronising and wooden - who could have believed it?

It's been a very sad series for me. Sad Sad Sad

Blessthekids · 11/12/2018 10:07

Although yes Joe has never danced before he does have the very important advantage of a huge number of loyal supporters. I'm not sure that even Darcey's abilities as a dancer can counter that! The final has always been a popularity contest with judges scores just for guidance so how can he lose? I personally will be voting for Faye or Ashley.

Inkanta · 11/12/2018 10:21

Sordid Sneak and his slimey shananigans Grin Aye it's been a right to do.

Jitters22 · 11/12/2018 10:25

sordid Snean and his slimey shenanigans

Grin Grin Grin

starkid · 11/12/2018 10:26

I vote for whose dance I enjoyed the most, which isn't always the 'best'. It's an entertainment show after all.

It isn't just his army of online supporters voting for Joe by the way. My 88 year old granddad told me how much he liked him a few weeks back (which was out of character of him as he usually favours Oti, I wonder why Wink )

I've voted for Joe a few times because I enjoyed his dance and felt happy watching it, compared to some of the others which were technically better but I find myself zoning out, or they looked like they weren't enjoying it themselves either. Some of Joe's ballroom ones were favourites of mine, but for example I cringed at the basketball and 'mmm bop' dances.
I've voted for Ashley for her American Smooth last week, Stacey for her Doctor Who dance, Graeme for his Tango and Lauren for her Paso Doble, to name a few.

DarlingNikita · 11/12/2018 10:51

Don't vote for who you 'like' or 'dislike' , don't vote on whether they smile, smirk, sulk or put their arm around their dance partner, don't vote on whether you like their costume or what they say .. just vote on those two minutes of dance performance.

Sorry, but no. I'll vote, as will a lot of people, on who I like and enjoy the most. That will be determined by a combination of their performance and ability AND their personality as I see it, relationship with their partner as I see it, the music, the costumes, the choreography etc etc.

This is a dance competition
Yes, but...

It is also a popularity competition. Which is why, as you yourself say, the producers cast celebs from a diversity of ages/personalities/ethnicities/backgrounds/fanbases etc.

If you want it to be purely a dance competition, better go back to calling it Come Dancing, drop the audience vote and watch the ratings decline until it gets taken off air again.

AvengingGerbil · 11/12/2018 11:04

The public is never asked to vote for the best dancer, but for their favourite. Thus, all the cries of ‘unfair’ are irrelevant.

The only way I can see to avoid the army of fans voting for the “wrong” candidate is to make it online voting only and keep the limit of votes to 3. Then it won’t be overbalanced by fanatical supporters phone voting dozens of times.

bonjournee · 11/12/2018 11:32

Thanks for these threads,it's great to read what others think.
I can't vote because I am not in the UK and we have a foreign ip address.
We can watch via a large satellite dish and a freesat tv which enables us to pick up all free to air channels.

Agree with a previous poster that judges shouldn't be allowed to vote twice.

I feel sorry for Ashley having to perform in the final knowing she wont win.It is the producers' fault they must have known that the GBP wouldn't vote for her.
It was a shame that Charles went,he should be in the final instead of Joe.

I will stop watching if Richard Madeley is ever in it.

DarlingNikita · 11/12/2018 11:36

Agree with a previous poster that judges shouldn't be allowed to vote twice. I can't find what you're referring to – what is this?

It is the producers' fault they must have known that the GBP wouldn't vote for her. I don't see how; ringers have previously done well, and even won –Alexandra Burke escaped the DO in the semi-final. Jill Halfpenny had extensive training. As did Danny Mac, Caroline Flack (winner), Jay thingy (winner), Denise V O, off the top of my head.

bonjournee · 11/12/2018 12:46

Perhaps it was in the last thread ,someone pointed out that the judges votes place them in order on the leader board ,then the public has a say ,then the judges again.

Wasn't there a lot of negative talk in the media about DVO and Alexandra
Burke?

DarlingNikita · 11/12/2018 13:19

Thanks, bonjournee. I guess though the judges only have a say in a proportion of the contestants, though, the two who are in the DO.

Wasn't there a lot of negative talk in the media about DVO and Alexandra Burke?
No doubt. But my point was in response to the assertion that the GBP wouldn't vote for Ashley. I didn't say anything about the media (if this part of your post is meant for me).

mydogisthebest · 11/12/2018 13:38

I might vote in the final. I usually do but this year just don't feel passionate about any of them winning.

I know almost nothing about dance and technique even after watching Strictly for a good few years. I tend to like dances like the tango and AT and the music makes a great difference to me.

Other years I have re-watched quite a few of the dances - Louis Smith, Simon Webbe, Jay McGuiness, Danny Mac in particular. This year I have only re-watched 2 dances - Seann's bodyguard tango and his Matrix paso. I really liked both of them (love the "I'm bring sexy back" song) and thought the paso was brilliant.

I've liked just about all of Faye's dances but not bothered about watching them again

bonjournee · 11/12/2018 13:53

Hi DarlingNikita,I don't watch reality tv or know much about "celebs"but I managed to work out that Lee from Blue would be out early and that Ashley wasn't popular just by reading threads on MN.

We'll miss it when it's overSmile

DarlingNikita · 11/12/2018 13:55

We'll miss it when it's over Yep! I love it Grin

GodrestyemerrySchadenfreud · 11/12/2018 13:59

the music makes a great difference to me

Same here Dog - and the music has been dire this year.

Total pants!

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 11/12/2018 14:29

The winner should be chosen by the judges not the public, it's a dancing competition not a popularity one.

Samcro · 11/12/2018 14:38

who would watch That?
the judges are so biased there would be no point in it.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 11/12/2018 14:43

But Joe is going to win because of his following and no way does he deserve to. At least if the judges chose the winner it would go to someone that actually deserves the title.
