YearOfYouRemember, not to worry, I’m feeling sour and pathetic enough for us all being full of cold so feel free to join me in my corner for a bit...🤧.

SoupDragon · 10/12/2018 21:32

This is a dance competition

Not really, at least insofar as it's not about who is the best dancer. At no point are you asked to vote for the best dancer.

someone who has clearly put her heart and soul into the competition

Ive not seen any of her heart and soul in it. It's all technically good but, for me, lacks any heart and soul. This is where I feel she differs from Faye.

YearOfYouRemember · 10/12/2018 21:37

Hope you feel better very soon MyImaginaryCatHasFleas.

Jitters22 · 10/12/2018 21:41

I dont dislike ashley, she is just not my fave , every one has their fave dancer, that is how these shows work.

Someone has to be at the bottom, its not always going to be the worst dancer, its not really just a dance show, imo its also a popularity contest, thats why someone like joe can do better than ashley.

Totally agree Samcro and we all know that the best dancer doesn't always win and it's a combination of ability, personality, improvement and of course the partnership itself.

I don't necessarily want Ashley to win Strictly. I think given how many series there have been there is rarely a brilliant 'start to finish' dancer, with prior experience, who wins, if ever. it's someone on a (dare I say it) 'journey', who improves week after week. who blossoms from a clod hopping cart horse to a gliding around the dance floor Giselle in a matter of weeks. Those are the winners we like and want!

But what I don't understand is the vitriol that is directed at Ashley? She's a great dancer. She was a great dancer from week one and she still is. Some performances have been better than others but she delivers .. she works, she trains and she performs and that is what the producers of Strictly expect of her.

She signed up because she loves to dance and she expected, I'm sure, for this process to be enjoyable.

But instead of that it's made her sad, vulnerable, unhappy and unsure about how the British public feel about her. She's lived and worked in the UK for the past 7 years and calls London 'home' so she's not some imported celebrity just to make up the numbers.

I'm sure she went into this thinking it would be an amazing experience. Without doing the sympathy card thing, her father committed suicide at the beginning of the year and then a few months later, the invite comes from Strictly and you can just imagine someone in those circumstances thinking 'yes, this is just what I need'.

But instead of being the happy, upbeat experience she might have been hoping for, I can only imagine how deflated and upset she must feel that it has all turned so sour. And then having to go into the dance studio with Pasha to work on dances that she knows she's never going to perform because she will be the first one to get kicked out of the final.

Ashley is a great dancer, probably the best celebrity dancer that's every appeared on Strictly (and I'm quoting Brendan Cole there).

Maybe the producers didn't realise how good she was. Maybe they didn't care. Maybe they courted the publicity. Maybe she is just a victim of the whole process.

But whatever the reasoning is, she does not deserve the level of spite and vitriol that has been slung at her.

xsquared · 10/12/2018 21:42

Monkseal readers poll shows that the majority want Faye to win but think Stacey will. Interesting.

If I was a betting person, then I'd put my money on Joe winning. I would like Stacey to win the most but wouldn't mind if Faye won it.

Theromanempire · 10/12/2018 21:44

Yes, that AT below is Premier League whereas Joe's AT was non-league in comparison!!

OutragedERIC · 10/12/2018 22:02

I get the impression that people have warmed to Faye From Steps (FFS) a bit over the weeks, but gone off Stacey.

That’s based on me and my somewhat small social circle of reference though Grin

xsquared · 10/12/2018 22:04

I've always liked Faye from the start for nostalgic reasons and have enjoyed watching her.

I still think Joe rather than Stacey will win, based on his youtube views alone.

OP posts:
Samcro · 10/12/2018 22:10

See i like stacey and want her to win, but i think joe will win.

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 10/12/2018 22:13

I'll be suspicious if Joe doesn't win tbh, what with his army of fans. Even if they didn't religiously vote every week I'd expect them to frenzy-vote for their idol in the final Grin Grin

Jitters22 · 10/12/2018 22:21

I still think Joe rather than Stacey will win, based on his youtube views alone.

So because he's an internet celebrity with millions of followers .. but is the least talented celebrity of the four who have made it through to the final ... that seems perfectly acceptable to the great British public? He's the worst dancer but he's got a huge online following so he'll win? That's fine, that's acceptable. That's not perceived as unfair?

But Ashley, who is the best dancer by a country mile deserves to be trashed online, criticised, vilified because she's a trained dancer? She doesn't carry millions of votes, she relies on her dance ability. If she won it would be 'unfair'?

For Joe to win is fine. For Faye to win is fine. For Stacey to win is fine. For Ashley to win is a travesty because she has an 'unfair' advantage.

You couldn't make this shit up if you tried.

Confused
UnderMajorDomoMinor · 10/12/2018 22:25

Jitters I think the vast majority of people here lay the blame for Ashley’s problems at the producers feet. Many people have said they feel sorry for her and many people have said Joe should have been out weeks ago (the last thread was called ‘joevermarked’!)

Discussing the reality that joe might be swept to an undeserving victory isn’t a slight on Ashley.

OutragedERIC · 10/12/2018 22:25

I can’t even begin to imagine Craig’s face if Joe does actually win Shock

Samcro · 10/12/2018 22:25

Joe might not be the best dancer, but he had never danced. Before. He could never compare to ashley as she has so much more experience.
I think for a lot of people, he and stacy are what they feel the show is about.

CaptainBrickbeard · 10/12/2018 22:31

The show is as much about ringers as it is journeys. It wouldn’t work without the mix.

I’d say a vocal minority blame Ashley for Ashley. It’s not the comments about not enjoying the polished technicality of her dancing I object to, its the bitchy venom about her being fake, sulky, ‘the American’ as someone disdainfully referred to her earlier - they are the comments that leave a nasty taste on the thread.

I’m hoping Faye will win personally. I will only be irritated by a Joe victory out of any of the finalists because I’m sick of mediocre men triumphing over better women! I do like Joe, but I don’t think he deserves to win. I’m glad he’s in the final though.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 10/12/2018 22:42

I know people hate ringahs, but most entertainers have some dance in their background, so unless all the slebs are sportsmen or reality stars it’s going to be unavoidable.

I don’t mind Ashley, and I don’t read anything into her reactions at her scores. I can understand it must be miserable being in the bottom two week after week. Charles struggled with it too.

Jitters22 · 10/12/2018 22:42

Joe might not be the best dancer, but he had never danced. Before. He could never compare to ashley as she has so much more experience.

I think for a lot of people, he and stacy are what they feel the show is about.

Yes I get that, but with the greatest respect you are missing the point by several miles.

Joe would NEVER have got this far without his online support. His online followers. He came into this competition with more of an advantage than Ashley did.

She had dance ability and no following, and he had no dance ability but a massive following. And yes he's got better .. but based on that semi final there is no way on this earth that Ashley deserved to be in the bottom two with Lauren, while Joe sailed through. Worst dancers on the night were Lauren and Joe.

The only way Joe survived through this series without once being in the bottom two HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE FACT THAT HE HAS NEVER DANCED AND EVERYTHING TO DO WITH HIS MILLIONS OF ONLINE FOLLOWERS WHO VOTED FOR HIM.

Can you not see the difference?

Stacey is a different kettle of fish altogether. She has proved herself to be a really good dancer, and she doesn't come into the competition with massive online support. If people are voting for Stacey it's because she is good and she represents what they like to see in Strictly.

But Joe hasn't progressed in the same way; Saturday's semi-final and for weeks before, he deserved to be in the bottom two based on performance and ability. What has saved him has been his online support THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HOW HE DANCES ON THE NIGHT.

He came into this competition with as much an 'unfair' advantage as Ashley. But for whatever reason people choose to ignore that and aim all their vitriol at Ashley due to her previous dance background which critics constantly use as a stick to beat her with.

How is her advantage any more unfair than Joe's advantage, given that it's votes and not dance ability that will decide who wins???

xsquared · 10/12/2018 22:45

I'm not keen on Joe winning at all as the others are miles better than him! There are no "wow" dances from him at all.
I do think it's unfair.

OP posts:
Samcro · 10/12/2018 22:49

I haven't voted for joe at all.

ISawSassyKissingSantaClaus · 10/12/2018 22:54

See I really like Ashley and have supported her on threads and by voting, and will do so again next Saturday, but from a purist Strictly-journey point of view, then out of the final four Stacey would be my winner.

It's been an odd year this year. Lots of distractions. Not connected as much as I have in previous years (& have watched every single series). Seems at times to have been less about the dancing and more about the mini-dramas going on far more than in previous series. Not a vintage Strictly year by any stretch of the imagination and if am honest am not as excited about the final as much as I usually am. Ah well...roll on Dancing On Ice! Xmas Grin

Jitters22 · 10/12/2018 23:01

Four dancers on the night.

Don't vote for who you 'like' or 'dislike' , don't vote on whether they smile, smirk, sulk or put their arm around their dance partner Confused, don't vote on whether you like their costume or what they say .. just vote on those two minutes of dance performance.

I like Ashley but I won't vote for her if Stacy's dance is better.

Vote on the performance itself and you will get a fair result.

Vote on your interpretation of a facial expression, how someone speaks, your own pre-conceptions and prejudices ...and you won't get a fair result.

Belindabauer · 10/12/2018 23:44

Yes I wish people would vote for the dance on the night.
I've voted for different people depending on the dance.

People are clearly not voting for the best dance, if they did then Joe would have been in the DO.
I've heard people say they want a man to win and to be fair on many occasions a man had won when there was clearly a much better woman who should have won.

I've been online and seen how much support Joe has, unbelievably hid 'fans' says things like 'he is definitely the best dancerhis dance was by far the best.'
Well no, he isn't the best dancer, he is now the worst dancer but with his army of blind followers he has a very good chance of winning.

I want Faye and Giovanni to win.
I like all of them but my fave pro dancer is Giovanni by a mile.
I would much rather watch him than any of the other pros and Faye is as good as any of the other competitions so I want them to win.

Wingedharpy · 10/12/2018 23:55

Perhaps they should just put their names in a hat and head judge, Shirley, gets to pick one out.

Jitters22 · 11/12/2018 00:35

I want Faye and Giovanni to win.

I like all of them but my fave pro dancer is Giovanni by a mile

I would much rather watch him than any of the other pros and Faye is as good as any of the other competitions so I want them to win.

And that's lovely and perfectly fair, and your opinion. And in stating it you haven't made any negative, derogatory or cruel remarks about any other competitor.

I don't know who I want to win, but I will vote on the night for the dance that hits the buttons.

I know Ashley is the best dancer, from the flick of her finger to the point of her toe and people would be very blind not to see that.

But does she connect on an emotional level for most? Occasionally yes, but most of the time no, and I have to level a little criticism at Pasha here for overloading the routines. He knows she's good, he knows she can tackle anything so he piles it all and while Ashley ticks all the boxes in terms of Pasha's checklist ... it does't leave a lot of time for the emotional, spiritual aspect of dance.

Vote for the dance on the night that you love the best. It might be Ashley, it might be Faye or it might be Joe or Stacey.

But all this negative criticism of Ashley needs to stop because she will bring her all to that final .. she has never given anything less throughout the competition, and those who have hurled vitriol towards her should hang their heads in shame.

ppeatfruit · 11/12/2018 08:09

If we're voting for the best DANCER it's a tossup between the 3 women finalists.

BUT because of the you tube voters the winner will be another Joe (last year's Joe was a better dancer that this years). Oh dear. Sad
