...or will Kim Joy claim the title? Will Rahul nail it with a bake they DO have in India?

It’s anyone’s to lose.

Making e.g. a tart with a classic short pastry case and using Indian (or whatever) flavours isn't the same as making a totally different kind of bread, though. The former is sticking to the brief, the latter turning out something the substance/base of which wasn't asked for.

Yes I’d agree. I don’t think you can compare a “brick” of a rye bread - which is a very dense loaf anyway - to a pain de campagne with a few rye seeds in, which is a much lighter bread

Most weeks didn’t have a national theme so it was fine to bring different cuisines in

Danish week no
French Patisserie week no

flamingofridays · 31/10/2018 15:11

I still maintain that Rahul should have gone out that week.

abbsisspartacus · 31/10/2018 15:13

I think it was a bad series and a bloody mess of a finale which is a shame because they were all good personalities and cracking bakers when they were allowed to be

Taffeta · 31/10/2018 15:28

Yes it was a shit series, Noel the saving grace

Bad editing
Stupid challenges
Unrealistic timings
Straying too far away from baking just to be different
Little appetising food
Not enough human stuff about the participants

I think the production company should read this thread

MrBirlingsAwfulWife · 31/10/2018 16:19

The trouble with the rye bread challenge though, was that they asked the contestants to "be inventive" and come up with a "personal recipe" because they said that traditional Danish rye bread takes 24 hours to make - and the contestants only had 3??

If authenticity is important then FFS ask for a bake that is actually possible in the time given!!

Manon's 'personal recipe' was edible and tasty whereas Rahul's was "indedible".

MrBirlingsAwfulWife · 31/10/2018 16:20

inedible rather than indedible Grin

Oh I missed that.

That’s truly shit then.

Another example of making it fucking impossible. Hmm

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 31/10/2018 16:33

Leave to prove for about eight hours or ideally overnight. The dough will double in size eventually, but will take considerable longer than wheat-flour breads.

This is what Paul Hollywood's own recipe for rye bread in Good Food Magazine says.

Also, most rye bread recipes use a sourdough starter.

shearwater · 31/10/2018 16:44

I've probably wanted to eat more things this series than before.

My only criticism is that they should give them longer for some challenges.

shearwater · 31/10/2018 16:45

I thought the Danish week was brilliant, but yes, the challenges should be realistic in the time given.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 31/10/2018 17:11

Kim-Joy’s surname is Hewlett, apparently, for whoever it was asking.

Re Rahul and his 'never eaten a doughnut' and that the concept of fried dough was unheard of in India. I'm South Indian as I think its he. I've eaten tons of fried dough products- Savoury and sweet! He's not just off the boat-he's been here 8 years!! Anyway meh. I think Kim-Joy will bring out a book but by Christmas, we'd have all forgotten about it and C4 will be trying to think of ways to sex up the next series.

FekkoThePenguin · 31/10/2018 17:20

DH reckons it's all an act. He's actually a hard drinking, womanising macho man when he's not in TV.

MoreThanJustANumber · 31/10/2018 17:30

Bake Off used to inspire me to bake, I'd watch it and think 'Oh I could make some of those at the weekend' but now it's all too impossible and they are setting people up to fail.

There's no way I could be bothered to make a melting chocolate globe or a biscuit chandelier, but some of the old challenges used to really motivate me to try something new. It's all a bit of a shame really.

WereWolfcub · 31/10/2018 17:49

I’m watching it again. I don’t know if it’s wise

yawning801 · 31/10/2018 17:58

The whole point of Bake Off was for a warm, homely village-fete set-up to inspire people to bake. I think Mary Berry was perfect for that, whereas Prue is quite distant and stand-offish, just like Paul. Mel and Sue were quite witty, whereas Noel and the other one are just ridiculous IMHO.

WereWolfcub · 31/10/2018 18:17

Just watching the glass shattering again and Rahul lost a whole load of cake batter and all of the start of his sugar work etc. While they were still clearing up his station the ladies had both got their cakes in the oven so he lost far more time than they had given him back.

I think Kim joy made a bit of an error using recipes she’d used earlier in the series because she doesn’t demonstrate any new skills.

Paul was incredibly rude to Ruby at the start of the signature bake and to Rahul after the incident.

SchadenfreudeUndeadified · 31/10/2018 18:19

I'm only going to watch it so that I can complain about it on here Werewolf

I love the vicious infighting respectful differences of opinion which the GBBO threads stimulate.

I have made many oaths of vengeance delightful friends as we share our points of view in a spirit of mutual loathing great camaraderie.

Loopytiles · 31/10/2018 18:26

It came across that their feedback to Kim Joy was deliberately negative, whereas Rahul they glossed over the negative, eg appearance.

SchadenfreudeUndeadified · 31/10/2018 18:27

Paul was incredibly rude to Ruby at the start of the signature bake and to Rahul after the incident.

If he spoke to me the way he spoke to some of the contestants this year, he would have been wearing my entry, not eating it.

He was disgustingly rude.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 31/10/2018 18:32

I’m no fan of the creosoted dicknozzle but it wouldn’t surprise me if the producers had told Paul to play up the Mr Nasty stuff, in a bid to add a bit of Channel 4 ‘edginess’ to a cake competition.

grumiosmum · 31/10/2018 18:48

I like Noel & Sandi better than Mel & Sue.

My strategy of recording the show so i can start watching at 8.15 then fast forward through the ad breaks backfired though - something went wrong & I didn't see the doughnut making, just the judging.

WereWolfcub · 31/10/2018 18:49

I miss the food history bits that Mel and Sue did. I love Sue ❤️ so I miss them but I have warmed to Noel and Sandy. I cannot warm to Prue
