...or will Kim Joy claim the title? Will Rahul nail it with a bake they DO have in India?

It’s anyone’s to lose.

The thing is that Prue is essentially a chef rather than a baker. Mary had lots more baking experience and her experience comes from her background as a home economist, which means it's about what you can achieve in a domestic setting.

Tbh that showstopper challenge was no worse than the god awful wedding cake final a few years ago where the contestants didn't have enough time to produce a polished enough looking cake.

To me Rahul's was extremely unappetising to look at.

Nothing but praise for Kimjoy's Doughnuts, (except for the slight difference in colour)
Ruby's nice texture, light, not filled enough. But a great actual doughnut good. Niot great flavour.
Rahuls' were too buttery, dense and SHIT.
...waiting to see why Rahul won... when he clearly came 3rd in the doughnut challenge. (Ruby 2nd, Kimjoy 1st)

00100001 · 31/10/2018 10:55

They've just been taken out to the fire pits to do a cheffy challenge. Why three dips? in a TECHNICAL challenge?? Confused

Waiting for Rahul to say he's never eaten a pitta bread before Grin

00100001 · 31/10/2018 10:56

what is the POINT OF THIS CHALLENGE???

The4thSandersonSister · 31/10/2018 10:58

The most boring GBBO final ever. All 3 Challenges were ill fitted to a Finals. By the end of it I couldn't have cared less if Noel decided to enter and won with a Lemon Drizzle that only got eaten in the staff room. Hanging all by hopes on Sewing Bee now Great Pottery Throwdown has been axed. Cut off in its prime I tell you.

00100001 · 31/10/2018 11:00

how does burning peppers prove their technical expertise?

00100001 · 31/10/2018 11:05

Rahul' pittas: Burnt and a flatbread not a pitta...
Kim Joy's pittas: Better shape, slight pocket, charred.
Ruby's Thick and small.

KJ - first
Rahul - second
Ruby - third

Still waiting to see why Rahul won....

The4thSandersonSister · 31/10/2018 11:10

Great Pottery Throwdown where the tears come from the judges. R.I.P Gone But not Forgotten.

00100001 · 31/10/2018 11:10

why would they say that they all did "pretty similar" in the signature, when clearly Prue and Paul liked both of Kim Joys doughnuts (so much so that Prue bagsied one) and Rahul's were pretty, but dense and tasted like crap???

The4thSandersonSister · 31/10/2018 11:16

GBBO & Great Pottery Throwdown Crossover. Noel Fielding and Keith Brymer Jones with this touching reworking of Sinéad O'Connor's Nothing Compares 2 U entitled Nothing Compares to Keith.

00100001 · 31/10/2018 11:18

They gave him 15 miutes??? What about when other bakers burnt things/ddidn't prove bread etc and they had to start agin with no extra time??

Toddlerteaplease · 31/10/2018 11:21

According to today's Times 'viewers warmed to his self - effacing personality' err really? It got very annoying.

Justmuddlingalong · 31/10/2018 11:21

GBBO is the one programme DP and I sit down to watch together. The week that Manon went instead of Rahul, he was pretty miffed. Last night, he was so pissed off he's vowed never to watch it again.

MarshaBradyo · 31/10/2018 11:22

Why did he get that 15 minutes?
I missed why

Taffeta · 31/10/2018 11:23

I’d’ve been outraged if they hadn’t have given him extra time.

15 minutes where all his stuff had to be thrown out because a storage jar burst in the heat, so not his fault in any way, ruining his baking.

Must’ve been super off putting as well.

When Prue said he was in a tizz over it I RAGED at the telly.

Disfordarkchocolate · 31/10/2018 11:32

I think the reason Manon was eliminated instead of Rahul was that it was Danish week and she didn't do Danish, she did French.

00100001 · 31/10/2018 11:33

because his storage jar shattered from the heat. He had to start again and 'lost' 15 minutes. I can sort of see why they gave him the extra time... it wasn't his fault I suppose. Bet they wouldn't have done it for the other two though...

Taffeta · 31/10/2018 11:33

I’ve just watched The Great Storage Jar Fiasco again and wonder if the editing is off?

Prue saying Rahul’s in a tizz and Paul asking him if he’s calmed down now. Wonder if he had a hissy fit they cut?

flamingofridays · 31/10/2018 11:36

I think the reason Manon was eliminated instead of Rahul was that it was Danish week and she didn't do Danish, she did French

but, to me, the most important thing about baking is that I can eat it. his was Danish, but inedible, hers was slightly French but entirely edible.

I think edible is more important than anything else.

Taffeta · 31/10/2018 11:37

Not sure I agree on the French/Danish/edible argument

It’s the great British Bake Off, not French

She did French every week

Rahul has only lived here 7 years but wasn’t doing Indian every week

flamingofridays · 31/10/2018 11:40

im not sure it being called the great british bake off has anything to do with it?

shes from france, all she did was use recipes she knew for the signature and showstopper, just like everyone else does. Just so happens that the recipes she used to are French

Taffeta · 31/10/2018 11:43

By that argument though Rahul could have baked Indian goods every week

Which is not following the brief

Manon didn’t follow the brief

She baked French bread instead of rye bread

Madbengalmum · 31/10/2018 11:46

Kim Joy was robbed!

whatashower · 31/10/2018 11:48

I think if it was just the personalities and judging that had incensed polarised the audience, that would be par for the course. But the really worrying thing is the tinkering of the format and trying to move it into full blown entertainment rather than factual and informative; as evidenced by the stripping out of the regional food features, less emphasis on expert technique explained, barely comparable and arcane challenges. And even diminishing the beloved contestant round up and how baking is informing their lives post bake off. Only the technical really remained true to form - up until the ridiculous final. My only true baking takeaways were that I now know some useful vegan substitutes, I have discovered the existence of the aebleskiver pan, and that I am never going to spray paint my food. It is only going to the website and seeing some of the contestants recipes that I can truly be inspired and appreciate the effort, inventiveness and compelling food combinations created by the bakers. Whether you warmed to Rahul or not, I think baking was the big loser in this series, and to paraphrase Paul himself, perhaps baking itself will judge this series. and drown PH and the production team in aquafaba This was dumbing down at its worst.

Azelma · 31/10/2018 11:49

I agree with others that I hope they go back to basics next year. In the more recent series there has been very little I fancy eating, let alone trying to bake myself. I used to learn stuff about baking - what makes a biscuit crisp rather than chewy, for example.

I also used to actually believe that the signature bakes could be genuine family recipes, even if the bakers had designed the recipe especially for bake off. This year, I think at least one baker said they hadn't heard of their signature bake before. Goes to show how obscure it has become.

I don't think the standard this year has necessarily declined, more that the contestants have been given ridiculous challenges with not enough time.
