And you could count yourself very lucky if the coating was mayonnaise. I swear they used revolting salad cream at my Borstal.

Toofle · 05/10/2018 17:21

grumiosmum, I have already pleaded for people to think of the bees. Though I've never understood why they apparently make so much more than they need.

FuzzyCustard · 05/10/2018 17:51

Note to self: Never accept Russian salad.

FlamingJuno · 05/10/2018 17:59

Why can't you put sugar in a vegan cake? Are vegan cakes less fattening than normal cakes? #notabaker #notavegan

grumiosmum · 05/10/2018 18:13

FlamingJuno I think it's because without eggs (or butter), it doesn't bind together as well - so you need a liquid type of sweetness to help with that.

grumiosmum · 05/10/2018 18:14

liquid and sticky

FlamingJuno · 05/10/2018 18:34

I see, thank you.

LoniceraJaponica · 05/10/2018 19:25

You absolutely can put sugar in vegan cakes Hmm

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 05/10/2018 20:33

Anyone watching Extra Slice tonight?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 06/10/2018 16:58

I swear they used revolting salad cream at my Borstal

Same here. Mayonnaise was unknown in Britaine in the 1960's, and even if it reared it's tasty head would have been dismissed as FORRIN and therefore not edible.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 06/10/2018 16:59

*its, not it's - sorry abut that Blush

SchadenfreudePersonified · 06/10/2018 16:59

*about, not abut Blush Blush

Gersemi · 06/10/2018 17:17

Anyone else finding they're over Tom Allen on Extra Slice? He was quite funny on the first one or two, but his humour really palls when it's the same thing every week.

WingMirrorSpider · 06/10/2018 17:20

Earlier today I saw Kim Joy irl. I did a double take but she’s unmistakeable so it was definitely her. I didn’t speak to her though.

FuzzyCustard · 06/10/2018 18:15

Gersemi I think I'm with you on that. I liked him the first week, but he does just do exactly the same thing every week. I'd prefer to see a different "commentator" every week...not necessarily a comedian, just someone with a sharp eye and a sharp wit.

yawning801 · 06/10/2018 20:19

I once nearly knocked poor Candice Brown over in a tiny train station shop Wing!

DarlingNikita · 07/10/2018 17:53

I'm glad to see the back of Stroppy Tom. I'm really pleased for Briony; she was excellent this week, although her pie was VERY heavy on the venison. Gave me the meat sweats just looking at it.

Looking forward to vegan week. I'm not vegan but some vegan cakes can be nicer than traditional ones IMO. I also think it's interesting how mainstream veganism must now be to have got its own week on GBBO.

ppeatfruit · 08/10/2018 19:50

That Russian salad stuff looks and tastes like a pile of vomit (yeeeeeuch) .

Extra Slice was alright Paul, is so funny when he tries to be 'normal' that Scarlet is sweet. The other bloke obviously didn't make a huge impression on me because I can't remember him and I watched the repeat yesterday Grin. I'm still waiting to see the guinea pig cake on it!!!!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 09/10/2018 13:47

Russian salad really is the product of Satan's bumhole.

ppeatfruit · 09/10/2018 15:20

Yes Schaden Grin Shock All it needs is parsnip in it to really piss you off Grin

Wolfcub · 09/10/2018 16:49

Checking in. Rahul is on my train!!! This is not a euphemism

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 09/10/2018 18:19

@Wolfclub, more details please! Taller, shorter, devastatingly handsome irl?

OP posts:
Myimaginarycathasfleas · 09/10/2018 18:20

@Wolfcub. I don’t know what a wolfclub is Blush

Wolfcub · 09/10/2018 18:30

Definitely short. He was with another young man who was a fair bit taller than him and who I thought I also recognised but couldn’t place. In fact originally I thought they were both blokes from work until I heard Rahul speak. Seemed very cheerful and normal although (like me) keen to get on the train before the platform was announced. Quite good looking for a short fella in person I thought.

bookbook · 09/10/2018 18:53

ooh, just reading up to date ready for later.
Would you believe, Russian Salad is a thing in tapas? ( or is in tenerife , anyway ...) - rather good actually, absolutely nothing like described ^ I must have been lucky with my school dinners ( a long, long time ago) . Cornflake crunch topped treacle tart anyone? :)
