I've not had chance to watch much, and am having a very stressful day, off for a scan on my pesky ovaries, can't find my letter( which has probably got mixed up with all the other letters for everyone else), and can't get through to anyone who can tell me where I'm meant to be going. it's not the job of the appointment department, apparently. Hmm.
it's too early for a stiff drink, isn't it?? Grin.

Oh, and well done to Thiem for winning in St Petersburg, his year has been a bit up and down, since RG, so he will be pleased to have a win under his belt.

Thank you Private! I love the reactions from Zverev. First he looks like he's totally ignoring him, then it's oh man, seriously? and finally OK, I might give this some thought!

www.express.co.uk/sport/tennis/1021795/Roger-Federer-Alexander-Zverev-Laver-Cup

gave me a better translation than I could work out. It's classic advice for Zverev it has to be said.

I have really enjoyed the event. I'm intrigued as to why a player like Thiem wasn't there. And there's some row players who have higher rankings than Taiofe though I believe he was a late replacement. Still think Team Europe should have had one doubles specialist, especially as Bjorn didn't play doubles, although in a team of six I realise it's quite tight. Did Enqvist play doubles?

PrivateParkin · 24/09/2018 10:08

Oh dear Raahh hope it all goes ok and that you get to the right place at the right time! Flowers

ferrier I was going to comment on Zverev's attitude but I thought I'd say nothing and let you make your own mind up! Thanks for the link to the translation, that was extremely interesting. And it seems to have worked. So maybe he took it on board after all - more than it looked anyway!

PrivateParkin · 24/09/2018 10:12

I don't think Enqvist did play doubles from what I can recall. Good point about the difference in the Mac/Borg doubles experience as well.

Who would be a good doubles candidate for Team Europe?

Re Thiem, that was a good win, I'm pleased for him. He said afterwards that he wasn't sure about playing St Petersburg next year yet, but maybe in future or something... So he could be lined up for next year's Laver Cup??

Raahh · 24/09/2018 10:53

Thanks, Private I think I'm sorted. Don't want to go though. I'm too cold to move. Grin.

Thiem made the right decision, really, as it puts him back in contention for qualification for London. Laver cup wouldnt have done that. Before this, he was a bit off the pace. Rafa, Djok Fed have qualified, Delpo will soon, and players like Anderson and Isner are scheduled to play more tournaments than him.

OP posts:
PrivateParkin · 24/09/2018 11:23

Yes I hope he makes it to London. We saw him there against Djokovic when he won the first set after about 8 set points or something - he lost the next two pretty comprehensively but still. Great to watch, and deserves to be there again.

PrivateParkin · 24/09/2018 11:24

Also: isn't Isner taking any paternity leave?!

ferrier · 24/09/2018 11:55

Maybe she travels with him?

Thiem should be OK for London. The top 8 are 500 points clear of Isner in 9th and 1000 points clear of Nishikori in 10th. Thiem being 7 and Anderson being 8.
How many points are available in the time taken by Laver Cup ... 250 or 500?

It's a shame that pl

JaneJeffer · 24/09/2018 11:56

I stayed up to watch because there's no school today. Roger also did coaching in English (I must have missed the German version) and it was great to watch. There was a lovely atmosphere afterwards with the World team joining in the celebrations although I wouldn't like to be the cleaner today after they sprayed champagne everywhere!

ferrier · 24/09/2018 11:56

.....ayers may not participate because of ranking points.

ferrier · 24/09/2018 11:57

It did seem like there was a lot of camaraderie across the teams as well as within them.

JaneJeffer · 24/09/2018 12:01

One thing I didn't understand was why they called Novak up to speak before the presentation? He seemed to get a lot out of it, being part of a team.

ferrier · 24/09/2018 14:44

I haven't seem the presentations.
But I do feel that Novak has been a bit of an outsider. He came and gatecrashed the Roger- Rafa party and no-one really liked it especially when his parents made unwise comments.
So for him, being part of this team may have been quite different than for the others who are used to being accepted.

PrivateParkin · 24/09/2018 14:53

ferrier that's the interview conducted in front of an actual oil painting of Novak, isn't it?! I'd forgotten all about it until now!! I think it must be nice to be part of a team for a change.

Has anyone seen the video of Andy Murray dropping and breaking a plate at some kind of presentation ceremony - on his Instagram today Grin well worth watching!

Raahh · 24/09/2018 18:24

private I've just seen the Murray presentation- whoops indeedGrin.

PrivateParkin · 24/09/2018 19:10

It's so funny isn't it?! Grin

Raahh · 24/09/2018 19:36

He must have been mortified, has a bit of a reputation for being a bit clumsy off court!Grin.I wonder how he will do this week? I think he is doing the right thing and not setting the bar too high. If he gets through his first round, he meets Goffin...

OP posts:
PrivateParkin · 24/09/2018 21:23

I hope he does well - although Goffin is going to be a tricky customer if Andy gets through to play him. That's a bugger of a draw for Andy - presume Goffin's the top seed? I see Shaggy and Tsitsipas are also playing, will be nice to see those two again Smile - well if it's on TV that is. Apologies for the lack of paragraphs in this post btw. My phone has randomly decided to stop doing them Hmm

GrouchyKiwi · 24/09/2018 22:07

That video is very funny. Poor old Andy.

ferrier · 24/09/2018 23:03

My phone has also randomly decided to stop doing paragraphs 🤨 so apologies from me too. // Since when did he become Shaggy?! // I think my pick for the doubles spot would have to be (with a certain amount of hesitancy) none other than Fabio. Decent singles ranking (currently higher than Kyle) and a Grand Slam doubles champion.

PrivateParkin · 24/09/2018 23:09

Good shout re Fognini ferrier. I was thinking while the tournament was on that he would have been a good choice anyway - he would have been so up for it, I bet! Or what about Feli Lopez - great singles player, and regular doubles player too. The more I think about it, the more I am convinced that doubles expertise is needed! //Argh still with the paragraphs!! Angry It must be a site problem.

PrivateParkin · 24/09/2018 23:10

I can't even remember what I was going to put in my second paragraph because I was so incensed about the lack of paragraphs!!

ferrier · 24/09/2018 23:16

Yes, Lopez another option. Last year definitely but I think his form has fallen away a lot this year.

PrivateParkin · 24/09/2018 23:28

Yes agree, his form has dropped off (the match against Delpo at Wimbledon springs to mind), but I would still like him to see him there, a bit of a sentimental pick for his last year on tour. Probably. Perhaps the Laver Cup should bring in a system where fans can vote in a wildcard pick for each team?! // Still no paragraphs Hmm // I've just been trying to find out if Shenzhen is on tv. It doesn't look like it. Apparently if Andy reaches the quarter finals Eurosport will show it. So that's no use. I know it's only a 250, but as it's Murray's penultimate tournament of the year, I thought it would be shown somewhere. Quite annoying!
