Yes you're right, Serena is a champion, and a brilliant one. But I don't admire her behaviour yesterday. Osaka was the champion last night.

Tbh I just want to look forward to tonight now. It would be nice if the actual tennis was the talking point for change. Because - mostly - it's been brilliant.

I wonder if Djokovic will play the dad card tonight when speaking to the female umpire Grin "I have a son and daughter!! I would never cheat!"

magimedi · 09/09/2018 12:35

Agree with you, Private.

There is a long thread about Serena's match last night in AIBU.

Speaking of children, I was up until all hours because DS2 announced at 11.30 that his soccer gear which he needed for a match this morning hadn't been washed and then I couldn't do it because his older brother who's returning to college today had decided that was the time to wash his things to take with him so I had to wait. Procrastination reigns supreme in this house!

PrivateParkin · 09/09/2018 12:50

Grin oh no Jane! But remember, it isn't your fault. You're a mother Halo

Anyway. I was supposed to be getting off that topic, but magi I clicked on the link to that thread... then almost immediately had to hide it in annoyance at the aspersions being cast on Carlos Ramos!!!

Just been reading about Alison Hughes, tonight's ump. She's the one who gave Baghdatis a violation for texting during a match!!

ferrier · 09/09/2018 12:55

I believe that Nadal has an issue with Carlos Bernades but not Carlos Ramos especially.
www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/tennis/rafaelnadal/11631798/French-Open-2015-Rafael-Nadal-admits-demanding-ban-on-umpire-Carlos-Bernardes-following-Rio-Open-dispute.html
However, Ramos has given code violations (time) against him.
Along with Mohamed Layhani (have completely forgotten the spelling sorry!) these are some of the most senior and respected umpires on the tour. All of them are getting some grief from the players. Are they making the right decisions, usually yes I think (although not in the Lahyani/Krygios case).
I think the major issue is that the rules are not consistently applied between umpires, across phases of the match (crucial/not so crucial), across players (high profile etc) and maybe across male/female.

JaneJeffer · 09/09/2018 12:56

Ah Baghdatis Grin

Raahh · 09/09/2018 12:59

Texting during a match Grin

JaneJeffer · 09/09/2018 13:03

I'm not getting involved with that AIBU thread!

PrivateParkin · 09/09/2018 13:06

Yep, it's definitely about consistency. I can't believe people are saying Ramos wanted to be the centre of attention Hmm. I can't believe they could have seen any of his other matches, tbh.

I know, I love Baghdatis. He was only texting his wife, apparently!!

JaneJeffer · 09/09/2018 13:07

Oh well that's ok then Grin love him

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 09/09/2018 13:10

This is the Nadal story, ferrier.

Raahh · 09/09/2018 13:30

Oh, well, texting his wife makes it ok. Grin.

Any way- I am looking forward to tonight, even though there is very little chance of me staying awake. (Or if I do, I will regret it in the morningGrin). I suppose it depends how long it goes on for. I wasn't planning on such a late night last night, but was so incensed by it all, I couldn't stop watching!

Vamos Delpo!!

This is the Nadal story, ferrier

Oh my - so he's said it about two umpires now! There'll be none left prepared to rule against his time violations at this rate!

ferrier · 09/09/2018 13:39

Interesting article here:
larrybrownsports.com/tennis/umpire-carlos-ramos-history-code-violations-serena-williams/463180

I don't see Ramos as being a stickler - merely one for enforcing the rules. Which presumably is why he's risen to the top of the umpiring tree because he is prepared to call against the top players.

Mama1980 · 09/09/2018 13:40

Afternoon all
Grinme too raahh I wasn't expecting to watch the end etc but I was so annoyed!

Hoping to watch at least some of Delpo tonight but I have a early start tomorrow.

PrivateParkin · 09/09/2018 14:26

I'd stay up all night for Delpo if necessary Grin

Mama1980 · 09/09/2018 14:47

Haha private ordinarily I would too but I have a groups of 8 children to take on a trip tomorrow, I need to be alert Grin

JaneJeffer · 09/09/2018 15:26

I've just seen some footage of Chris Evert after the presentation. She bowed to Naomi and gave her a hug. I wonder why they had her pass the trophy to the other woman to present to the winner? It was odd.

I loved the bow Jane. It was the only good thing about that ceremony.

It's 15°C and raining in NYC right now. Not sure who the roof favours - presumably Djokovic, if Wimbledon is anything to go by.

PrivateParkin · 09/09/2018 16:29

Mama that sounds demanding under the best of circumstances!! Good luck!

Fizzywinegum · 09/09/2018 17:11

I’ve just watched the replay of the match and it was worse than just reading about it. I think Serena was way out of order and think she owes Osaka an apology.

I’ve never seen someone look as miserable as Naomi Osaka did at winning a grand slam trophy - the ceremony was awful - Serena barely mentioned her opponent by name and made it all about her.

I also feel sorry for Carlos Ramos - I don’t understand how Serena could think she could get away with calling him a thief.

I am also a woman, a mother and a feminist and I do not want Serena crusading on my behalf in that manner.

I’m now looking forward to watching the men’s final when hopefully everyone will be talking about the actual tennis. Hoping for a really good match and for Delpo to win (although most of the pundits seem to think Djokovic will win).

PrivateParkin · 09/09/2018 17:32

It's made me feel quite upset for some reason. Serena's behaviour was awful. I feel the same as you Fizzy - I'd like to think of myself as all those things too, but I don't think it validates behaving how she did. The ceremony was just unspeakably bad, poor Osaka. And when those kids came out with the trophy, all wide-eyed and smiling at the occasion Sad - the irony!

Re tonight, I see Djokovic winning it too - he looks back to his old steely self. I do still like him because of the Wimbledon semi against Rafa (the bit that was played on the Friday I mean, which saved us from the servathon) but as Raahh said earlier, he could have stayed down in the dumps for just a little bit longer Grin

MirandaWest · 09/09/2018 17:42

I feel like Djokovic will win. But my feelings are not always reliable Grin

MirandaWest · 09/09/2018 17:42

DS is at a friends house and will need picking up. Have told him I will pick him up at 9 (nothing to do with the tennis of course Grin)

Raahh · 09/09/2018 17:52

Fizzy it was awful, wasn't it. When dh saw the pictures online this morning, he said it was hard to tell who had won.

And I wholeheartedly agree- a grown woman having a tantrum does not get to twist things and make out she is speaking for all women and mothers.

It was wrong that Naomi stood there and apologised to her- and Serena let her. A bigger person would have said 'No, this is your moment'. But not Serena.

As for tonight, even before the tournament, though my heart said Rafa, ever since he started to improve, my head has said Djok- even with Federer in his half (who he would probably have beaten),

But I really want Delpo to win. It would be a fitting end to the tournament for me.
