Some more from the game violation incident:
Serena to chair umpire: “You will never, ever, ever be on another court of mine as long as you live. You are the liar. When are you going to give me my apology? You owe me an apology. Say it. Say you’re sorry. ... And you stole a point from me. You’re a thief, too!”

magimedi · 09/09/2018 08:48

Wasn't it in another US final that she threatened to kill a line judge?

magimedi · 09/09/2018 09:18

Thanks ferrier - that was the incident I remembered. And Kim went on to win the US Open.

Sakura7 · 09/09/2018 09:42

She also abused the umpire in the 2011 final against Sam Stosur.

Couldn't be more different to her sister Venus who is a wonderful role model.

PrivateParkin · 09/09/2018 10:01

He did do that though ferrier - at the change of ends, when Serena was repeating what she said about her not being a cheat. He said he knew that but there was coaching. I think in the sense he did try to defuse the situation.

PrivateParkin · 09/09/2018 10:04

In that sense, that should have said. My posts have been typo-tastic lately Hmm

ferrier · 09/09/2018 10:06

More on the incident and Serena's post match thoughts:

Do the men get away with more? I don't know. Certainly Serena's body language was very hostile and she called Ramos a liar and a thief but she didn't actually swear at him. To me it was definitely verbal abuse, regardless of the lack of swearing, but are the men receiving the same punishments?

PrivateParkin · 09/09/2018 10:11

I don't know about that. I mean Fognini is a case in point I guess. (I haven't looked at the link yet ferrier so I don't know if that's mentioned.) The verbal abuse rule though is that you can't call the official's honesty into question. So Federer (for example) can say "Don't tell me the fucking rules" and it's not the same as saying the umpire is a liar or thief.

ferrier · 09/09/2018 10:11

I agree PP, I heard that too. Just thought at the time that that one step further of saying that it was the box that was the problem not Serena may have helped. 'It's not you, it's your box. They're not allowed to send any signals so I have to warn you'.
And indeed he did. It doesn't matter if the player received no benefit. It has to be policed in a way which hurts the player. I believe one commentator said that in the past, Patrick has received a fine and a courtside ban, but that's not enough. It has to disadvantage the player to stop it happening.

PrivateParkin · 09/09/2018 10:12

Yes agree. Or they could just say ok maybe we should change the rule (not that I think they should).

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 09/09/2018 10:45

I didn’t see the match but I watched the presentation of the trophies on YouTube and it was just embarrassing to watch Serena’s speech. Whatever went on in the match, she needed to get a hold of herself at that point and make sure that the presentation was all about Osaka. You could see when the interviewer was asking Osaka how it felt to win, and all those normal questions, Osaka just wanted to say, “It feels shit, and I am hating every second of this, and I just want to go home and cry.”

Serena did NOT behave with any class at all here, and I must say that I think considerably less of her than I did. Not happy either that she is turning her lack of self control and her poor manners into a feminist issue.

I’ve see Kyrgios behave himself with more grace and dignity under trying circumstances, and that’s saying something.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 09/09/2018 10:48

I thought the name was familiar - Nadal fell out with this same umpire last year during the French Open. It seems that Ramos is a stickler for the rules and applies them no matter who is on the court, whereas some of the greats of the game (sorry, Nadal - I love you still - because you would NEVER allow an opponent to finish a match feeling like Osaka did!) perhaps feel that they should get special treatment?

Raahh · 09/09/2018 10:48

I had to be up early this morning to take DD2 to a bowling party . 10am on a Sunday morning. Grin

I still can't believe what I watched last night.
I tried to explain to dh earlier, who had read about it online. I couldn't really.

Osaka was obviously shaken by it all, but carried herself with complete class.

The biggest punishment anyone could give Serena would be for everyone to go 'Meh, whatever, now, let's talk about Naomi'.

Can you imagine being Patrick today? He admitted coaching- she sat in the press conference, livid, and said she couldn't understand why he would say that.
Sparks will fly.

I've just watched as well. The crowd were disgraceful and the idiot asking Osaka how her dreams of playing Serena differed from the reality. Serena was awful "we'll get through this". She is, as we say in Ireland, a wagon!

PrivateParkin · 09/09/2018 10:52

TheOnly what about the interviewer, asking Osaka if this was everything she dreamed of?!? Probably not, eh?!

PrivateParkin · 09/09/2018 10:57

X-post Jane! It was ridiculous.

Catherine Whittaker said a great thing on the podcast today: that what happened with Serena was news, but Osaka's title is timeless. Loved that.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 09/09/2018 10:59

I know! I could tell that he was just trying to get through a hideous presentation as best he could, but he might have realised that he needed to switch the script up a little...

That moment of Serena reassuring the crowd, Jane - my eyes rolled so much I nearly blinded myself. She may as well have said: look, I know we all wanted me to win, I wanted me to win, I can’t believe this random has won who totally didn’t deserve it and it’s all SO NOT FAIR!

No mention from her about Osaka being the better player on the day, or a truly deserving winner, or all those things the runner up usually offers. She clearly absolutely thought that she had that match in the bag if Ramos hadn’t done what he did, and it wasn’t that she was simply outplayed on the night.

JaneJeffer · 09/09/2018 11:01

Yes TheOnly, she said Naomi played well! Yeah she won the fecking thing!!

Raahh · 09/09/2018 11:04

Catherine is right. No one can take it from her.

OP posts:
Raahh · 09/09/2018 11:07

TheOnlythe problem is, it was definitely a script- and one probably written with a Serena win in mind. Hmm. The other woman, wittering on about Serena being a 'mom'. I wanted to slap her.

it was all about Serena. It was like a testimonial match, not a final at the US Open that another player had just won Hmm.

Jane like I said up thread, that was the exact same way they talked about Kerber after Wimbledon. Billie Jean even tweeted that Serena was a champion too. Er no. She wasn't. Kerber was the champion, get over yourself.

If only someone had told us all that being a mother is a get out of jail free card we would never have had to account for anything.

Raahh · 09/09/2018 11:16

I know! Wouldn't it be great?!

Serena is a champion. End of
The Ramos chap had exhibited some questionable behaviour on previous encounters with the Williams sisters ,which is why Serena Williams was angry .
I agree that she can be a sore loser sometimes, but the anger is usually directed at herself. There was obviously a reason for her outburst
She will come back and win The Australian Open
