The guy has literally admitted he was coaching in full view what exactly was the umpire supposed to do Hmm

Fizzywinegum · 08/09/2018 23:16

I didn’t watch the match so can’t really comment fully but well done to Osaka - her name will be on the trophy but really sad that her moment has been derailed by the appalling behaviour of Serena Williams.

Yes she’s had a baby - so have many other millions of women in the world including top women tennis players. It does not give her an excuse to behave so badly, especially against her opponents.

PrivateParkin · 08/09/2018 23:18

Carlos Ramos got his medal backstage! I mean, I understand why under the circs because it would have made the ceremony even worse, but it's awful!!

MajesticWhine · 08/09/2018 23:20

I have never seen anything like that. I had to stop watching the presentation. It was too much.
I really hope Osaka can enjoy this achievement sometime soon.

JaneJeffer · 08/09/2018 23:20

She is such a bad loser. I don't know if I've posted this before but Marion Bartoli told a story of how Serena's husband/coach said to their baby someday you might win Wimbledon and Serena said not if I'm still playing. I thought that was weird.

Mama1980 · 08/09/2018 23:20

Glad to see the view in the studio is much more sensible.
She was coached, she smashed a racket and then just lost it. I agree private all he did was his job. She isn't above the rules.

ferrier · 08/09/2018 23:22

Naomi played a brilliant match.
The game penalty was fairly irrelevant as it was on Naomi's serve which she would most likely have held.
They're just showing replays of the game penalty - but really it was the whole game changeover that constituted the verbal abuse, not just the accusation of being a thief.
But Naomi played a brilliant game, let nobody take anything away from that.
The crowd was appalling for booing. Yes, Serena told them not to, but Serena was partly to blame for that. If she had not behaved as she did then the crowd would have given Naomi the respect and the applause that she deserved.

JaneJeffer · 08/09/2018 23:22

Good on Carlos Ramos for not kowtowing to Serena.

PrivateParkin · 08/09/2018 23:25

Ha just re-read my earlier post - it should have said amazon commentators, not amazing!! I don't like them that much Grin

Raahh · 08/09/2018 23:25

Come on now Private we know you love Greg

ferrier · 08/09/2018 23:26

I do think at the initial stage, Carlos Ramos could have said something like 'I'm not blaming you, I'm not saying you're cheating, but I can't ignore the signals coming from your box'. - in other words, blame the box and take the heat away from Serena. That's the kind of soft umpiring he could have done whilst still applying the rules in exactly the same way.

Mama1980 · 08/09/2018 23:26

Greg saying.....serena didn't handle it well, she caused all this. And should suffer the consequences.......
You think Hmm

I hope Osaka can really enjoy her victory tomorrow. Such an amazing achievement.

JaneJeffer · 08/09/2018 23:27

Why should he have to baby her, she's a grown woman

ferrier · 08/09/2018 23:32

Because he could have defused the situation a little.
She is entirely responsible for her behaviour but if Ramos reflects on this match, he will surely have wanted the situation to be defused and for the match to be completed without this awful awful situation.

JaneJeffer · 08/09/2018 23:33

I've put Sky Sports News on and they haven't said a word about it!

Piggyhoolier · 08/09/2018 23:34

I thought Naomi was phenomenal. And utterly adorable in her courtesy to the crowd who were being unbelievably rude during what should have been Naomi’s most amazing moment of glory.

I’m a life long Serena fan, but even before all the drama kicked off I’d decided that Naomi was going to be her successor in terms of my favourite female tennis player. Poor girl, hope she has an amazing career with many, many more wins. As for Serena...I have some sympathy, but I can’t condone her behaviour. Just my opinions.

PrivateParkin · 08/09/2018 23:38

Yes I think that's fair. The problem is some umpires would give a soft warning like you said ferrier, but others (like Carlos Ramos) aren't scared to enforce them straight away. If there was proper consistency then it wouldn't be so much of an issue.

PrivateParkin · 08/09/2018 23:38

Ha standing room only at Serena's press conference.

ferrier · 08/09/2018 23:41

I'm not saying give a soft warning. I'm saying, give the warning for on court coaching, but say to Serena, when she says he's accusing her of cheating, that he's not accusing her of cheating, he's accusing her box of cheating.

Bejazzled · 08/09/2018 23:42

"Maybe the mom in me said we have to pull ourselves together.”

Oh fuck off

PrivateParkin · 08/09/2018 23:48

Keith Nishikori has tweeted he is proud of Osaka Smile

Mama1980 · 08/09/2018 23:50

Yay Keith Grin

DramaAlpaca · 09/09/2018 00:04

Bloody hell, I'm speechless Shock

I missed the match and have just been reading about what went on today. What appalling behaviour from Serena, just disgraceful.

Well done to Naomi Osaka for keeping her head and winning, but what a shame she didn't get to enjoy her moment.

Sakura7 · 09/09/2018 00:13

Serena's behaviour is just appalling, and it's not the first time she has abused an umpire in a US Open final when she's getting outplayed. Also using the baby as an excuse for everything, give it a bloody rest!

Poor Naomi, this should have been a really spacial day for her and it has been completely ruined by her so called idol.

Serena may be the best ever but she has no class.
