A K-drama thread was suggested on the Netflix subtitled gems thread so we can discuss in more depth without swamping the other thread. There are a lot of Korean films & boxsets on Netflix and I’m discovering the quality is variable, so I thought this would be a goid place to swap recommendations (and ‘avoids’). So far, I have hugely enjoyed:

  • Something in the Rain
  • Mr Sunshine (new episodes still dropping weekly)
  • Live

Would also love to hear how closely these dramas represent real life in Korea from anyone who has lived there. Its fascinating learning about another culture.

😁... Just sussed out that Bong Soons dad is King Jinheungs (Hwarang) right hand man.. Pau?... (sp?)...

And... PSJ twin sister? Kym min Jin in SWP??!... 😂😂

Heechuloppa.... I really don't want to fall down the Kpop rabbit hole... Dh is already puzzled about the kdrama!... He'll think I've really lost it if BTS pop up on my playlist!... Though bettys is right... The dancing is jaw droppingly good!!

Glad you like the clip bettys!... Ahhh! I keep switching between PSJ and PHS! ❤️❤️❤️... Depends what I'm watching!!

A Sec Kim Reunion!

boatyardblues · 04/12/2018 14:43

Anyone else wondered if piggyback-induced back pain is an occupational health risk for kdrama actors? Just watching Gong Shim trying to give blind drunk ML a piggyback home & she’s half his size...

I can just imagine.....seoul on Friday night... Piggy back rides galore! 😁

bettys · 04/12/2018 17:19

Ooo-er some dark undertones to KMHM but also some very funny bits PSJ has great comedy skills.

Just read this article and this bit sums it all up beautifully... This is what I'm trying to say when explaining about what I love about a kdrama!...

"The Korean approach to making TV shows is drastically different from the one taken with shows in the West. Many of the aspects we’re used to seeing neglected on screen are given a lot of attention: character arcs are deeply explored, chemistry is built over time with lots of screen time in ways much more profound that physical contact, and bonds between characters of different ages are given relevance. Oh, and food montages. There are a lot of food montages.

In a time when we’re almost oversaturated with shows, which sometimes seem to blend together because they’re so similar, it’s nice to see human stories of love, identity and honor approached from a different angle."

Absolutely agree with the content of that article, though I've only seen Goblin out of the ones they've listed.

This thread on the reddit kdrama forum I read has lots of suggestions for dramas to watch

And also random stuff about product placement and bath houses www.reddit.com/r/KDRAMA/

and this is hilarious but oh so true!

bettys · 04/12/2018 22:08

That is brilliant Bea! Glad to see they've got the Truck of Doom and 5 year Time Jump in there Grin

Bea · 04/12/2018 22:12

😂😂😂Suspicious Partner (netflix)...EP 1 15 mins in... Soju... Drunken piggy back ride and shower scene already!! BINGO! 😭😂😂😂

Bea · 04/12/2018 22:16

.... I would like some praise for actually watching something without PHS or PSJ in!... I feel like I'm in withdrawal! 😢😂

bettys · 04/12/2018 22:49

👏👏well done, I think Ji Chang Wook will fill the PSJ PHS gap very nicely! 😉

boatyardblues · 04/12/2018 23:06

I’m tearing through Beautiful Gong Shim, which seems to be nicely balanced in terms of kook, humour, intrigue and rrrrromance. Also ticks the drunken piggy back, white truck of doom, chaebol backstabbing, overreaching mothers, orphaned children and shirt-off boxes.

how can he be soooo handsome?!
Help! 😭

Bea · 05/12/2018 22:30

Loving Suspicious Partner... It's all very intriguing!! Episode 4!...😁

boatyardblues · 05/12/2018 23:20

I’m loving Beautiful Gong Shim. I’m 3/4 of the way through and lots of the mysteries have wrapped up sooner than I was expecting, so really not sure what to expect in the last 1/4. Maybe 5 episodes of chaebol matriarchs screeching, scheming and hair-puling until the outcome is decided. 🤷‍♂️

Yes! These dramas seem to conclude 2 eps early! But that's great because I love an epilogue!... Though it usually consists of a marriage and the appearance of children!... Meanwhile they don't seem to make any effort in ageing any of the characters!!... Ending of She Was Pretty springs to mind!! 😂

boatyardblues · 05/12/2018 23:50

Meanwhile they don't seem to make any effort in ageing any of the characters!!...

except for the end of Black, which gave Betty and me The Rage.

bettys · 06/12/2018 00:15

Ooh yes I still have the rage over the ending of Black (but don’t let that put you off watching it’s in my top 6)

Just got back from fab night out in Korean restaurant where we were the only non-Koreans. We sat next to a gorgeous young couple straight out of a kdrama he was wearing a suit WITH NO SOCKS and she had lovely hair like Secretary Kim

Should’ve said pics are of seafood omelette & seaweed salad, kimchi platter & bibimbap & BBQ meats. Sadly friends not in soju mode 😞 but I am hoping to convert them 👍

boatyardblues · 06/12/2018 00:32

Betty - Glad I’m not the only one who drags her nearest and dearest to Korean restaurants. The last time DH and I ate in our local one, there was a matinee idol gorgeous young Korean guy at the next table eating alone (sob). He was wearing the most fabulous cream sweater (I promise I’m not making this up), which was a brave choice with tteokbokki and sticky chicken.

I was dying to order the pork belly & cut it up with scissors on the BBQ but we had delish beef & chicken instead. Behind us were a couple of girls who had TWICE as much meat & had to order more lettuce & wine. Sadly no piggybacks just an Uber 😞
