K-Drama recommendations

A K-drama thread was suggested on the Netflix subtitled gems thread so we can discuss in more depth without swamping the other thread. There are a lot of Korean films & boxsets on Netflix and I’m discovering the quality is variable, so I thought this would be a goid place to swap recommendations (and ‘avoids’). So far, I have hugely enjoyed:

• Something in the Rain
• Mr Sunshine (new episodes still dropping weekly)
• Live

Would also love to hear how closely these dramas represent real life in Korea from anyone who has lived there. Its fascinating learning about another culture.

Burn! Seaweed soup declared inedible by DH and DS2, who loves seaweed.

No birthdays, just experimenting. I made DS2 a noodle soup earlier this week when he was poorly and I snipped some kombe (kelp) in Healer-style with the kitchen scissors. It was such a hit, DS has been asking for seaweed soup again. The anchovies made the stock for this one all weird though, and now the house stinks too because DS1 kept leaving the kitchen door open when the stock was simmering (even though I asked him not to).

The love interest from Something in the Rain appears later as a psycho who beat someone to death. He's doing brooding menace pretty convincingly, having been all sweet and boyish in Something in the Rain.

I was watching Pretty Boys Flower Camp earlier and they ate spring rolls with rice paper they soaked in hot water. Looked delish

The frequent seaweed soup in Prison Playbook did prompt me to make it, I have to admit. This recipe called for pre-soaking. I had no idea how salty it was! I will probably soak in future before adding to soups, or radically dial down any miso/soy sauce in the recipe.

Ha! The shoes-off-indoors habit is so culturally strong, the awful Captain (?) Na in the penitentiary even took his shoes off to go into the cell when he needed to talk with male lead and his cellmates.

Yes the meals in the gondola! Have only just started ep 2 but the skipping rope in ep 1 had me in stitches!

Finished Fight for my way... It was delicious!! Soooo satisfying! And completely full of warm and fuzzies now! Deffo in my top 3!...sigh!... PSJ!... 😍😍😍... sorry bettys have been bewitched!! ❤️❤️❤️...

I sometimes go back & watch my favourite bits if I need a quick pick-me-up. Did you see the bit at the very end mid-titles where they wake up & she thinks it was all a dream?

Yes!!.... I loved all those little clips at the end!... Little fillers of the storyline!! It was a fab drama!... Great talk on bench between Dongman and his Father.... Loved feisty Aera... Their insults to each other were hilarious... And Coach was lovely!... Everything was juuuust right! The scenes where Dongman was recuperating in bed were beautifully done... All the people who loved him just getting on with it and looking after him... ❤️❤️
Loved everyone and very satisfying at the end! Thanks for the happy ending reassurance!...

You know when you are in trouble when you find a kdrama actor you like and are relieved they’ve done their military service already so you won’t have to wait 2 years for a new drama from them.

Ji Chang Wook finishes his military service in April, so hopefully not too much of a wait.

I made excellent progress on Prison Playbook yesterday, although I didn’t turn in until about 1am. There are romance elements, some in flashback some new, as it progresses. The bromance is the heart of it though. It’s big on friendships and relationships, with some black comedy in the mix.

I’m only on ep 4 of Prison Playbook due to actually having a social life - gah who needs one when there are kdramas? - then fell asleep while watching. I’m so hoping there’s a happy ending to this am getting invested in the characters

Lol I’m trying not to do a skippitydoodah as I’m so enjoying the little twists. Like the prison guard who I thought was a baddy (and who was the villain in I Hear Your Voice ) turning out to be a softie who sings My Way anonymously.
But I so want the lead to get back with his gf and handsome guard to go out with lead’s sister..
And something nice to happen to the druggie and Dr Ko and for Jailbird to come back
