K-Drama recommendations

A K-drama thread was suggested on the Netflix subtitled gems thread so we can discuss in more depth without swamping the other thread. There are a lot of Korean films & boxsets on Netflix and I’m discovering the quality is variable, so I thought this would be a goid place to swap recommendations (and ‘avoids’). So far, I have hugely enjoyed:

  • Something in the Rain
  • Mr Sunshine (new episodes still dropping weekly)
  • Live

Would also love to hear how closely these dramas represent real life in Korea from anyone who has lived there. Its fascinating learning about another culture.

Like the prison guard who I thought was a baddy (and who was the villain in I Hear Your Voice ) turning out to be a softie who sings My Way anonymously.

Same here. The Demon Captain is interesting too.

But I so want the lead to get back with his gf and handsome guard to go out with lead’s sister..

Same here. In AIBU I believe this would be called a drip feed. It’s maddening, but in a good way. There are definite signs of progress Betty, so don’t skip bits.

I was just thinking about Looney (druggy) - you find out interesting things about all of them.

Ooh Demon Captain has just arrived!

boatyardblues · 25/11/2018 16:03

He’s the cute, boyish male lead from Something in the Rain, so its good to see he can do glaring psycho too.

Also second male lead in While You Were Sleeping
Still cute even with psycho glare

The shower & work-out scenes are fun. Wink

You two! 😂😂😂 Have not watched anything all day!! I'm feeling very pleased!!😂

boatyardblues · 25/11/2018 17:17

There’s a very inconvenient waist height partition in the shower block, but there are impressive abs aplenty. 👌

Boatyard! 😂😂😂😂😂

When the crappy prison governor finally shows some backbone, you’ll be cheering him on Betty. Mark my words.

I love the vibe in their cell and Looney on drugs is so different!! I ❤️Gunner Jang. Just how many 3/4 length coats does handsome guard have?

boatyardblues · 25/11/2018 20:07

I love it too. I’m so glad I gave it a go.

The ‘Jail Dates’ twinning arrangement is genius. 😂

Also love Kaist’s flight of fancy/fantasy life daydream. On our household lingo, he’s “an oldie, but a goody” and scrubs up a treat. (In truth, if I IMDB him he’ll probably only a few years older than me. 😱 So I won’t.)

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 25/11/2018 22:56

I lied. I looked him up. FML! It’s worse than I thought.

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 25/11/2018 22:57

(He’s actually younger than me.)

OP posts:

Just looked him up Kaist looks v different in real life. Younger than me too (they all are)

You’re obv way ahead of me. I am so glad Demon Captain is a good ‘un. I just laughed at loud at the competitive exercise in the cell but he is well fit Blush

boatyardblues · 26/11/2018 00:17

So glad I’m in good company, Betty. I was feeling a bit like the middle aged woman equivalent of Bob Mortimer and Vic Reeves rubbing their thighs.

If you mean the faceplant on the cell floor during the fancy press-ups, that made me laugh too. But also admire Jung Hai In’s crazy fitness level.

There’s a flashback scene later on with Kaist with dark hair and he looks a lot younger. Phew!

I was feeling a bit like the middle aged woman equivalent of Bob Mortimer and Vic Reeves rubbing their thighs - yes ! or the old women from Harry Enfield "ooh young man!!"

I've taken to viewing the lovely young men as works of art which are in a gallery for me to admire but never own.

Quite so. I also prefer the seeming aesthetic towards an athletic build rather than the Hollywood preference for Swatzenegger bulk. The sharp tailoring and luxurious knitwear works better on the toned athletic frame, whereas bulk only really works with superhero spandex and muscle vests.

Hear hear! When I saw Mr Sunshine in Red 2 he looked positively delicate next to Bruce Willis, and yet he is ripped to high heaven.

I am finding Prison Playbook so heart warming. The only bits I am 10 seconding through are the Private Park ones as I find those too upsetting to watch Sad

boatyardblues · 26/11/2018 11:09

The private Park bits are important plot-wise, but I know what you mean.

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 26/11/2018 11:11

You want to watch the first couple of episodes if you enjoy Mr Sunshine looking ripped. The series is interminably dumb and quite sexist so I abandoned it around ep 3.

Episodes of IRIS < most important bit!

OP posts:
bettys · 26/11/2018 11:21

Oh he's not in my top 5, I was using him as an example as mostly you can't directly compare as there aren't many fit westerners in kdrama. However I will now have to go and check Iris out for research purposes.
