K-Drama recommendations

A K-drama thread was suggested on the Netflix subtitled gems thread so we can discuss in more depth without swamping the other thread. There are a lot of Korean films & boxsets on Netflix and I’m discovering the quality is variable, so I thought this would be a goid place to swap recommendations (and ‘avoids’). So far, I have hugely enjoyed:

• Something in the Rain
• Mr Sunshine (new episodes still dropping weekly)
• Live

Would also love to hear how closely these dramas represent real life in Korea from anyone who has lived there. Its fascinating learning about another culture.

Turning in now. I like Prison Diaries, though the change of personnel in the penitentiary is a problem for me. Hopefully this will be resolved soon. Good to Gunner Jang again, though. I also realised that the baseball player is not Trash from Reply 1994, although there are similarities build-wise and in appearance.

I will have to catch up, slightly thrown that psycho Chief Jo is also the chief instructor from Hwarang. I keep thinking the ML is Seo Ji-Sub from The Master's Sun, but it's not.
I'm liking it so far, don't know where it's heading yet.

How far did you get Betty? I’m about half way through ep 3. Like you say, I have no idea where it is going which is fairly unusual for kdrama. It would be good if some of it happens outside of the jail. I think pissing off Seagull (gang leader) may come back to haunt him on the outside. But I was also struck by his corrections officer friend saying that he wouldn’t ever see any of his prison friends on the outside, so not to get involved. I think he’s building allies (like Jailbird) who would help him if he needed it. Oh yeah, and whats with the death row guy with the star tattoo? He seems to like the lead.

Oooo! Just come across a trailer for Descendants of the sun .... Looks good!! Anyone watched it?... I can't possibly start another drama!!... 😭

Bea Divine Fury looks amazing. Fight My Way was so different a role from Secretary Kim that it pushed PSJ to the top of my (very skewed) ML rankings.

I've been avoiding Descendants of the Sun simply because of the military theme, as I don't like the Richard Gere/Officer & a Gentleman style film, but happy to give it a go if someone says its not like that.

Heading in to episode 2 of Prison Playbook and slightly worried that Chief Jo has it in for him & he's never going to get out and get back together with his ex-gf who bites her nails. The longer episodes are making it like watching a film.

I'm looking forward to Kingdom with the fab Bae Doona coming in January. Evil dead sageuk kdrama yeah!

Prison Playbook has me hooked. Things start to hot up in the penitentiary. Plus we’re starting to see more of the outside world in flashback and through the ourside lives of the peripheral characters. It’s really good.

I have lots of chores to do today, so I shouldn’t watch more but I peobably will.

Snuck in one ep of FFMW between taking dd to tennis and cleaning kitchen!... It is just such a giggly lovely series! It's all good at the moment... Everyone is... Sort of... Happy! 😂😂❤️

I haven't the entire thread but I have been watching two romcom K dramas and am absolutely smitten by the lead actor : Jo Jung Suk

You have to watch Don't dare to dream (Jealousy Incarnate) and Oh my Ghost. As a bonus, both are on Netflix. The feels in this show, oh my God you guys!

Don't dare to dream (Jealousy Incarnate) and Oh my Ghost have been discussed and appreciated at length up thread. You are amongst friends here, itsmehere1, when it comes to appreciation of Jo Jung Suk's finer qualities.

Jung Kyung-Ho is looking mighty fine in Prison Playbook. I'm about 6 or 7 episodes in now and you get to see him in good knitwear and 3/4 length coats when he's off duty. There is much to enjoy.

I am making Korean seaweed soup this evening, but I think I need help from seadays and our other Korean contributors. The anchovy stock, which I made with spring onions, kelp and dried anchovies (didn't have a daikon radish to hand unfortunately), has a slightly bitter twang. I think it's the anchovies. Is there part of it (e.g. head) that I should discard before making the stock?

Only on episode 3, no sign of handsome guard so glad to hear he reappears in 3/4 length coat. Nice to see gf flashbacks and am enjoying gunner Jang & sly twists in story
