So, classic Eastenders starts airing on the UKTV Drama channel from tomorrow! Two episodes from noon, and they’ll also be on UKTV catchup.

Use this thread to talk about Den, Angie, Arthur, poodle perms, poor fashion choices and Ethel’s Willy.

Yes I think that was standard age then for solids. My youngest was born in 1999 and it was 4 months then.

tobee · 28/11/2018 15:55

Also, in a previous episode, Lofty put Vicky down in her cot on her front. New guidelines are coming in all the time. My mil was always commenting on changes and saying we were fussing too much. Her mother, however, thought all the new baby gadgets etc were brilliant!

tobee · 28/11/2018 15:55

And by gadgets, I include disposable nappies. Grin

The music is bloody awful. Sharon isn’t exactly a musical talent. I think most soaps have had an aspiring pop star who has performed on the show. Neighbours did it all the time in the 80s with Kylie and Jason Donovan’s band.

The Arfurrr stuff is unrelentingly grim now. Not long til Xmas breakdown, maybe the grimmest EE Xmas ever.

I lnow anyone wpuld think he was innhis 60"s not 40,s surelt 40 odd year olds had slills to offer even innthe 80,s ? Apparently according to Google Simon,Berry ,Paul J Mesford and Leticia Dean had all had musical training at stage achool which was why they were cast as the singer's.

tobee · 28/11/2018 22:05

Harry's hilariously awful

Akire · 28/11/2018 22:47

Yes it’s shocking Pauline and I are almost same age, you look at Kat and Sharon and Mel now all mid to late 40s and with teen kids and spring chickens. I don’t remember to much more of plots from this era I was probably in bed before it was on!

Other teens have gone back college where is asharon? Is she just “being in a band”?

AamdC · 29/11/2018 13:15

Oh Michelle walk away from it all now! Ah the Xmas club money......

JohnGalt · 30/11/2018 16:21

I remember everyone going on about his amazing acting and how hard hitting the storyline was but I thought it was a bit cringe really. Still an important tele cultural event though I guess.

tobee · 30/11/2018 19:06

The episode where Michelle was cutting Sharon's hair; Sharon was constantly moving her head around while talking. Not a good idea. Could have done herself a mischief.

Funny that I remember there was quite a strong left wing stance then to the writing. I know Wendy and June are/were died in the wool Tories. Iirc Wendy and Bill did not get on due to political disagreements?

I’ve been dipping in and out of this since they started showering it. I was 14 when eastenders first stared and I watched it avidly then, the biggest surprise ive found now is how boring, slow and badly acted a lot of it is. I have enjoyed the Michelle pregnancy and onwards story though. I was thoroughly gripped by it first time around as she was only a couple of years older than me, I thought it was quite exciting and almost romantic this time seeing it through adult eyes it’s really just sad and seedy.

I did like the way none of the Fowler’s thought Michelle jilting Lofty was a bad thing, in their own way they’ve all been very supportive of her.

tobee · 03/12/2018 15:04

I've been watching all out of order.

That vicar is a right turn off!

dingdongdigeridoo · 04/12/2018 12:00

Loved the 80s wedding dresses! Michelle looked like she’d borrowed a nightie off Lou.

Agh the Christmas club money. Arfurrr you fool. I looked it up and apparently 1.5k in the 80s is about 4k now. I don’t get why he needed so much money for a town hall and buffet. Kaff made the dresses, The Banned were the entertainment, weddings were much cheaper and simpler back then.

He paid for the honeymoon tooHmm, my uncle got married in 1985 but his wedding was a much posher affair i wonder how much his wedding would have cost?

AamdC · 04/12/2018 12:51

Has Dr Leg ever heard of patient confidentiality?

tobee · 05/12/2018 01:36

Apparently not!

dingdongdigeridoo · 05/12/2018 21:42

Dr Leg is both the best and worst doctor ever. He will make you a nice cuppa when you go to see him, but will also spread gossip around the square.

I feel sorry for Ange. Especially since she threw the hen do for Chelle. The Den and Jan scenes are really boring. Zero chemistry and she looks like his Hyacinth Bucket dressing auntie who is lecturing him.

Did everyone watch the Den and Angie twohander? Classic episode, although they definitely cut it.

AamdC · 06/12/2018 10:44

I i thought it wad a bit over acted tbh?

gower4 · 06/12/2018 17:19

I think Anita Dobson overdid the hysteria but Leslie Grantham was amazing. He was such a good actor - so tense and unpredictable!

dingdongdigeridoo · 06/12/2018 18:35

Den is such a bastard. I’d forgotten how awful he was.

God the music on this show is awful. I’m so sick of hearing Nick Berry and Sharon’s dreadful band.

OP posts:
gower4 · 07/12/2018 12:33

Although watching it the second time around, you can see how trapped he felt by Angie. She's so needy!

cancla · 08/12/2018 00:42

Leslie Grantham was brilliant.

And Paul J Medford, who played Kelvin is really standing out as a fabulous actor.

AamdC · 08/12/2018 09:12

Has he ever been in anything else?

tobee · 08/12/2018 16:31

I always used to like Kelvin but forgot what he why.

A lot of the speaking extras are a lot worse in the old episodes.

I prefer Den and Angie being an up and down couple, them not really getting on, rather than a definite other woman and plan to leave. Staying together out of habit, for Sharon and the pub. More realistic. But they go for the big drama of the story. Would have been better imo if you had just a suspicion of Den having other women, plural.
