Loved season 1 and 2
Lost it in season 3 for me
Will watch though as I love the female leads
not so keen on Noah though!

I agree - I can't stand Helen and I thought it was just me as lots of people say they like her. I just feel like she is incredibly self obsessed and whiny and always has an agenda. It's quite clear that she is still in love with Noah and I think when the therapist asked "Who could you not live without?", she was thinking of him.

midsomermurderess · 12/07/2018 12:57

I think it is descending into lazy cliche. The Californian therapist, the dippy neighbour, the TexxMex restaurant with mariachi band, the earthquake phobia (granted a metaphor for something else) and the cringey scene with Noah and his unexpectedly brilliant student, like that terrible Michelle Pfeiffer film. It has so lost its way. Utterly pointless.

nipersvest · 12/07/2018 15:45

I've watched The Affair from the start but am pretty close to giving up on it now. Am just finding the 4 main characters irritating rather than intriguing. The only one I can just about bare to watch is Cole. Helen was great in earlier seasons but now, just baffling. I find Alison arrogant and selfish.

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 12/07/2018 17:16

I agree nipers

It’s sitting on my DVR from the other night and I can’t be arsed. Felt similar last week

EachandEveryone · 12/07/2018 18:24

Bring back Whitney.

TeradelFuego · 12/07/2018 22:10

Why do Helen and Noah's children have such awful names? Whitney and Stacey, 80s names and rather chavvy at that, Martin and Trevor (!) sound like 60 year olds. Is it some kind of in joke?

midsomermurderess · 12/07/2018 22:54

Yes, Fuego, the names are truly awful, all of them.

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 12/07/2018 23:43

They don’t make sense for that couple either in terms of background and as a set of four, don’t make sense either

juneau · 13/07/2018 08:11

I reckon Helen is older than mid-40s. I'm mid-40s and she's much older than me - I reckon she's at least 50 (Whitney must be about 25 by now?). And yes, the baby thing is ridiculous and IMO a stupid story-line to be pursuing.

The show has lost its way - I agree so many cliches and repetitions. And Helen has gone from being an irritating, but believable character, to being unbearable. I realise unbearable people do exist and someone as privileged as her character is is quite likely to be unbearable, but she's unwatchable.

And yes, the names are awful, although names in America aren't quite the same as here. Some names that we would consider chavvy are acceptably middle class there, but such a wealthy family would surely choose better names than Whitney, Martin, Trevor and Stacey?

Vagndidit · 13/07/2018 10:31

The children's names are awful, agreed. I don't know if the writers are American or British, but the names strike me as ones that Brits may think are popular in America, but never were.

I did go to school in the Midwest in the 80s with a couple of Stacys though...

The suggestion to have a baby is utterly bonkers. The actress that plays Helen is in her 50s. Although I suppose hippy dippy neighbour might have a womb for hire...

TheHandmaidsFail · 13/07/2018 12:55

oh yes, I was wondering what the relevance of that neighbour was going to be.....

5000FingersofDrT · 16/07/2018 10:06

It's always made me laugh that the youngest children are called Stacey and Trevor, especially as Helen couldn't be more WASP-y (and seriously rich - they bought that Brooklyn house outright with her money, didn't they?) and Noah, although working-class by origin, had risen through education.

I also didn't realise that 'Vic' was actually Vikram - he didn't look Asian to me.

EachandEveryone · 16/07/2018 13:32

The writers are Jewish middle class American I would imagine. It’s got a feel
Of all those other great soapy dramas Parenthood, Brothers and Sisters, thirtysomething etc all very similar writers if not even the same. The names are bizarre although better than Chip I’ve never got where Chip and Skip come from are they short for anything?

I’m guessing Dominic West is the same age as me 50 and Helen is probably that. She’s never claimed to be younger. Still, it’s LA isn’t it hasn’t Bridget Neilsom just had a baby in her 50’s?

I still don’t get the clips they are showing at the beginning. They annoy me for some reason.

Is this the last season?

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 16/07/2018 18:13

Aren't the creators Israeli?

The same people that made In Treatment I think

In Treatment was a remake of an Israeli show

I don't know if the same is true of The Affair

EachandEveryone · 16/07/2018 19:15

I don’t think so I read a lot of interviews when it was good I never got the impression it was a remake. I can’t be bothered to google as I’m so fed up of it. Hostages was a great Israeli show.

EachandEveryone · 18/07/2018 00:03

Its just tedious isnt it? I dont like any of them and im not bothered how it pans out.

TomHardysBackpack · 18/07/2018 15:55

Been very slow up til now but my ears pricked up when Ben spoke in the AA meeting....

Mari50 · 19/07/2018 07:53

Of all the things annoying me about The Affair at the moment I think the fact that Joanie has brown eyes and her ‘parents’ are both blue eyed. Noah is the only person who looks like he is biologically related to her.

EachandEveryone · 19/07/2018 12:13

And how she'd shrug it off and laughed when he said he'd brought her up as his own for two years,

Actually, the seeing the story from two sides is annoying me now as we are over the afair part. It woukd be better just being a straightforward drama now?

juneau · 19/07/2018 14:12

What annoyed me last night was Cole just going off on 'walkabout' when his DD his staying for the weekend. So he's just going to leave her with Luisa then? He doesn't think that he needs to run this plan by Alison first, as well? Is she happy that their DD will now be spending every other weekend with her step-mother and not actually seeing her dad for what - months? Argh! So ridiculous!!!!

EachandEveryone · 19/07/2018 14:46

I donth think she would be bothered tbh.

jardy · 19/07/2018 21:20

I'm still enjoying it but cannot understand why the addict ( a grown man ) was dressed up to look like a school boy, ridiculous. The veteran was a good actor but he gives me the creeps.Alison looked gorgeous in this and Luisa is lovely.Alison is fragile and I can understand why Cole doesn't want to say she's an unfit mother.Joanie is treated like a much younger child, more like a toddler, being carried a lot. She's a big girl! However I really am enjoying it.I love the scenery and the acting .

Loopytiles · 19/07/2018 21:53

Bet the veteran is a wrong’un.

PsychedelicSheep · 19/07/2018 22:31

Ben seemed like a completely different person in the AA meeting than with Alison. Great acting. That actor is smoking hot too 😍

OneInAMillionYou · 21/07/2018 00:25

I think I am an episode behind, but I was appalled at Helen telling Vik's mother when she had been expressly forbidden from doing so.
That was disgusting behaviour and I would not have forgiven her. He deserved to tell his parents in his own time, not at the awards event and certainly not hearing about it in a Ladies' loo from someone you're not particularly fond of!
Despicable.

I too am getting bored of the 'two sides' format to every episode, it serves absolutely no purpose now, and I wish they would just crack on with the narrative in each episode. Irritating. I almost didn't watch this season as S 3 was the biggest pile of junk!
