I couldn't see a 2018 Eurovision thread. But surely I can't be the only one who has been checking out this year's songs.

Semi final 1 is looking tough - my money is on the winner coming through this one.

Meanwhile semi final 2 seems wide open. Pretty much anyone could make it through.

Plus there are some reasonable songs from the 6 guaranteed finalists.

Semi 1
I reckon Finland have a good chance. Great song, and I think the staging could be amazing. DD agrees. Meanwhile DS likes Cyprus.

Bulgaria are strongly tipped by the bookies, but I just don't get the hype. Seems very average.

Semi 2
The two that stand out for me are Denmark and Malta. I'm totally at odds with the bookies - who favour Norway (hate this) and Ukraine.

Finalists
Spain is my favourite, although Italy is growing on me. The more I listen to France, the more I dislike the song. Confused

Hurray a Eurovision thread:-)

Well the favourites are Israel by far followed closely by Australia, Czech Republic and Estonia. Finland will probably do well.

I like Spain too and love Belgium (its a grower).

OublietteBravo · 24/04/2018 17:27

I really dislike the Czech Republic's song. Almost as much as I hate the one by Norway.

There are some good songs with non-English lyrics this year. Albania in particular is growing on me, and I like Greece too. I can't work out if Hungary is terrible or utter genius

I've had the Eurovision playlists on in the background whilst I've been doing mundane tasks such as cooking and ironing.

I've discovered that when certain songs come on, then I stop what I'm doing and skip past them. These songs are: Norway, Netherlands, Georgia, Czechia, Iceland and San Marino.

eggsandchips · 27/04/2018 18:01

When is it? It's not showing this weekend on TV guide?

eggsandchips · 27/04/2018 18:03

Got it. H has it in diary Blush

OublietteBravo · 27/04/2018 18:07

Semi finals on 8 May and 10 May. Final on 12 May.

I can't believe how fast it's come around.

Place-marking 👏
Let's keep the thread going 😜

okdok · 27/04/2018 18:10

Wish they'd show Junior Eurovision.

mnahmnah · 27/04/2018 18:11

It’s actually on my birthday this year!!! Hurraaahhhhh!!!! Grin

YouBetterWORK · 28/04/2018 13:13

Ahhh my people! It'll be a low key one this year with a 3 month old, mind you from what I've heard of this years entries that seems to be the theme. I have a playlist, and looking at 2014, one of the best years IMO. Pollaponk, France's moustache song, The common linnets, the Polish butter churners, and of course Conchita! Just pure entertainment.

This years all seem a bit meh, where's the bonkers? But there seems to be more in the region of guitar rock, DH says Hungary sounds a bit like early Thrice, and the Netherlands have gone full dad rock. I'm liking the long hair/beard/wind + vikings of Denmark. Belgium sounds a bit like a Bond theme.

Deathraystare · 29/04/2018 19:49

France's moustache song

I still have that in my mind sometimes and when I want to cheer myself up, I play it from you tube!!

mnahmnah · 29/04/2018 21:37

Greece 2002 is my all-time favourite. Get the giddy sniggers even now

nisyrios · 29/04/2018 21:56

Once again we have a clear favourite (Israel), which I am certain that won't win despite the odds, because the juries won't be impressed.

I like France and Italy, but the social message (albeit important) could be regarded as too soppy. I'd like them to win though. I saw UK at the Graham Norton Show and it seemed OK, but it won't be remembered.

As in every year, until we see the stage performances of the semi-finals we won't be able to predict anything!

pinkrocker · 29/04/2018 22:00

Ooh yay Eurovision thread! Tomorrow I shall be looking on YouTube for the songs.
It's OH's birthday on Eurovision night, and I've asked if we can go out the night before rather than on his birthday so that I can stay in and watch it
He thinks I'm a lunatic and extremely sad.

OublietteBravo · 30/04/2018 17:19

I'm also planning Eurovision around a family birthday. My sister is going to turn 40 the week of Eurovision. I hope I've convinced her that the bank holiday weekend is the best time for a family party Grin

Finally found you all!
Parking myself here.

Love Portugal's and Serbia's entries this year. Also Estonia, and as usual, Moldova.

Among my favourites from the past couple of years were Belgium's 'City Lights' and Finland's 'Blackbird'.

OublietteBravo · 01/05/2018 17:38

Anyone else been listening to the clips from the rehearsals?

First semi:
I was surprised by how good Ireland sounded, and disappointed by both Belarus (the dancing was fab, shame about the singing) and Belgium.

At the moment I'm going to go for the following countries to qualify for the final (in alphabetical order):

  1. Azerbaijan
  2. Bulgaria
  3. Croatia
  4. Cyprus
  5. Estonia
  6. Finland
  7. Greece
  8. Israel
  9. Switzerland

I'm not sure how to call the 10th spot. I'd like it to be Albania, but fear it will be Czech Republic.

Austria, Belgium or Lithuania all remain possibles (depending on the actual performance on the night).

OP posts:
OublietteBravo · 01/05/2018 18:18

Oh, and FYR Macedonia (as a possible along with the other three).

Ireland, Iceland, Armenia and Belarus almost certainly going home.

mnahmnah · 01/05/2018 19:34

I don’t watch the qualifiers because I like to save it all for the big night. But I worry now that i’m missing out on the entertainment!

ppeatfruit · 02/05/2018 11:05

So no one likes GB's then ? No me too Grin Ken Bruce R2 played it a couple of days ago. I don't know how it won our heat. THH I try and watch EV but it does go on and on and on……. Grin

SmashedMug · 02/05/2018 11:10

Our song drives me mad because it sounds like a rip off of another Eurovision song and I can't place which one. Especially the chorus but. I thought it might be the intro of Only Teardrops but still racking my brain!

ppeatfruit · 02/05/2018 12:46

They ALL sound like something else !!! I feel sorry for the writers because most tunes have already been discovered !!!!

LivingtheLifeofBoris · 02/05/2018 15:00

Joining in here as an avid Eurovision fan, but I've never posted on any of the threads before. That's partly because I never listen to the songs before the final, as I like to hear them for the first time on the big night as a special treat to myself!

I thought the UK song sounded like Avicii's Hey Brother?

mathanxiety Those are my 2 favourites from last year. I listen to them frequently, particularly City Lights. Great songs, and not 'just' by Eurovision standards either.

I was really disappointed that Blackbird didn't make it into the final - I thought it was head and shoulders above the majority of the other qualifying songs. Confused

mnahmnah · 06/05/2018 19:22

Channel 5 tonight has two programmes over 4 hours in Eurovision!
