Eurovision 2018: Dust off your hamster wheel and dig out your pink pleather leotard

I couldn't see a 2018 Eurovision thread. But surely I can't be the only one who has been checking out this year's songs.

Semi final 1 is looking tough - my money is on the winner coming through this one.

Meanwhile semi final 2 seems wide open. Pretty much anyone could make it through.

Plus there are some reasonable songs from the 6 guaranteed finalists.

So pleased that someone else shares my taste here, LivingtheLifeofBoris Smile

I have them on my playlists.

OublietteBravo · 06/05/2018 21:05

Semi final two is really difficult to call. I'm still trying to work out which ten countries will qualify.

I'm going to have a guess at the following (in alphabetical order):

  1. Australia
  2. Denmark
  3. Hungary
  4. Moldova
  5. Norway
  6. Poland
  7. Serbia
  8. Slovenia
  9. Sweden
10. Ukraine

There are a number of countries that could qualify depending on how the performances go on the night. I put Latvia, Malta, Montenegro, Netherlands and Romania in this category.

Which leaves Georgia, Russia and San Marino in the 'not getting out of the semi' category.

I'm pretty sure the overall winner will come out of semi final one. My money is on Estonia.

(Belgium was my favourite song last year - looks like I'm not alone)

I'm planning on using the BH tomorrow to swot upon Eurovision. I have had it in the diary for a while, and have managed to stave of many other social invitations around it. Unlike the year when a so called friend only went and held their hen night on the final. Tssk.

Will a top knot in one's hair be a bit passe this year, d'ya think?

YaBasic · 06/05/2018 23:01

Hello Fellow Eurovision Watchers!!

I am still sulking that Germany are sending an Ed Sheeranesque song about being brought up without a Dad - it is schmaltzy as fuck.

I was born from one love of two hearts
We were three kids and a loving mum
You made this place a home
A shelter from the storm
You said I had one life and a true heart
I tried my best and I came so far
But you will never know
'Cause you let me walk this road alone

You let me walk this road alone - yeah, blame your Dad for dying there Michael.

We could have had silly men in thigh slapping Lederhosen dammit!

YaBasic · 06/05/2018 23:08

(I am well aware I am being mean - his Dad died when he was 14 and he's about to become a Dad himself but I am still sulking because Lederhosen)

My DH is plumping for the boyish charmer with the sax and the camel in the video.

And DD thinks Holland Bon Jovi are in for a shout.

YaBasic · 06/05/2018 23:19

with a shout, even!

Austria Cesar Simpson has one line in his song in the chorus which I swear is from
New Age (Marlon Roudette) Are you loving the pain, loving the pain?!!
Sampson

Roudette

Germany are taking their own huge LED screen because the song is a bit dull without it.

DD likes Finland, DS is supporting Cuprus.

the pinned tweet map is worth a look Wink

YaBasic · 06/05/2018 23:43

Taking their own screen is almost as embarrassing as when Lena entered the weirdy lycra stranger song the year after Satellite ''to defend the title.'' Where's an eyeroll emoticon when you need one?!

YaBasic · 07/05/2018 00:00

Oh no! Czech republic (camel boy) Micolas(?) has hurt his back and can only dance a little bit with his backpack bless him.

OublietteBravo · 07/05/2018 00:01

I like the map - and it appears I'm not alone in disliking the entry from Norway.Grin

The LED screen isn't as embarrassing as Russia's mountain. Why have they chosen to dress their singer as a small mountain? Just why?

Oh, and Serbia seem to have an Albert Einstein lookalike playing the pipes Confused

OublietteBravo · 07/05/2018 00:03

Apparently Mikolas landed awkwardly doing a backflip during the first rehearsal and ended up in hospital. There was talk earlier in the week about moving him to the second semi to give him more chance to recover.

Ooooh Eurovision fans!!! Moldova were robbed last year. Angry

OublietteBravo · 07/05/2018 00:08

Ah, but if you believe the 40% ballad theory*, then Moldova simply had the wrong type of song to win last year.

*If more than 40% of the songs in the final are ballads, then a non-ballad will win; if less than 40% of the songs are ballads, then a ballad will win.

Oubliette you hate camel-boy?!! did ya put a banana-skin on stage, did ya?!

OublietteBravo · 07/05/2018 12:02

I've got nothing against camel-boy per se - I just hate his song.

I've made some rhubarb cordial. It's a pretty pink colour and I reckon it'll be a perfect base for Eurovision drinks.

So far I've established that it goes really well with ginger ale.

YaBasic · 07/05/2018 17:44

That sounds lush. I will be drinking cider while trying to eat as many different countries' food as possible Wink I was of course teasing you - I was very against the song (stealing the Moldova sax, dripping and wood in the lyrics etc) until DH PLAYED IT EVERY SINGLE FECKING DAY on repeat to inception me with the damn thing….now it's an earworm. He did the same with the Swedish entry last year - I have heard the Burton/Top Man smuggery 1000x now. As foe Mikolas (what kind of name is Mikolas?) Very cute glasses but he really needs to lose the backpack.
Back on here tomorrow, looking forward to it, thanks for starting the thread x

YouBetterWORK · 07/05/2018 17:57

@YaBasic, thigh slapping lederhosen! That's what I'm on about, not what they've actually sent over this year. Mind you, it sounds like they've decided based on song and performer. Last year's 'perfect life' was a bit pants and whoever they decided to represent them had to do that song.

Looking forward to semi final tomorrow! One day I will achieve a bucket list ambition to attend a final!

SneakyGremlins · 07/05/2018 18:00

Can't wait for Saturday!

YaBasic · 07/05/2018 18:14

Yes, the German entry was a choice of six performers this year with six original songs - Michael was third for me, I much preferred Ivy Quainoo if we were taking it seriously and Voxxpop above if we weren't.
I think the Schlager/Volkslied came 2nd in the public vote but I also know Germans who were cringing at the idea of them representing us. But I just want to hear the Eurovision of old really - it seems so serious now and I much prefer kitsch or silliness, like Russian old grannies or pirates or buxom washerwomen or Spaniards doing El Robocop and the like. Old school Grin

OublietteBravo · 07/05/2018 18:14

I'm really looking forward to tomorrow's semi final. It's definitely the stronger of the two.

I don't think I could just watch Saturday's final any more, although I know a lot of people do. You miss some of the more random staging (San Marino's dancing robots almost certainly won't make it to the final, and I fear it will be a similar story for the Romanian mannequins).

Oh Lordy yes, what were they thinking? Did someone raid the Tardis set and steal some autons?!

mathanxiety · 07/05/2018 18:24

Moldova are always robbed Sad.

This year I have high hopes for them yet again.
