Why only 4 graves at the end? Are we meant to think that chief witch woman somehow posessed Matilda to become the Archangel?

OP posts:
xmaspudd · 12/02/2018 23:46

@phlebasconsidered

I watched with my mum and we wondered whether the other child (boy who was adopted and died) was the child of Laura (lady who heard a voice) as the lady in the shop said he was the child of a druggy (?). Then that could explain WHY she heard the voice and said "he died in here all alone" when she went to the house with Tilly.

Could be completely wrong though!

scrabbler3 · 13/02/2018 00:39

I've been watching Gavin and Stacey repeats so it was disconcerting to see Nessa's dad and the vicar show up in this!

Totally bonkers series, but it was ambitious and unusual with a brilliant cast. Some lovely scenery too.

pseudoscion · 13/02/2018 08:53

I think the mum was recognising the "angel" that was possessing Matilda. Maybe the mum was possessed?

yrhengi · 13/02/2018 10:52

This is a very basic question and one which I'm sure was answered in the programme somewhere (I watched the whole thing in one go while in bed with flu so suspect I missed key points) but WHY were the antique dealer, the GP, Kendrick, etc, summoning the angels? What did they want to get out of it?

I know Tara Fitzgerald lured Matilda towards the scary cupboard with extremely vague talk of infinite wisdom and vision but... what exactly was going to happen? What kind of wisdom? Just... looking into the abyss type stuff? If some woman who'd abused me as a child was telling me to get into the cupboard where I'd just realised other children had died, I would want VERY SPECIFIC REASONS to do so... unless she was sort of talking to the shard of archangel (?!?!?!) that was left in Matilda (?!??!?) from the first time?

rumbelina · 13/02/2018 14:31

Yes I kept wondering that, yrhengi. I thought at first they were just dabbling in the occult but it did seem that there was some really specific stuff going on.

I also am a bit annoyed they didn't clear up Tru's dad's involvement. I'm assuming he was a 'goody' apart from the affair with Rose, but I don't understand why he had to wash his clothes and hands.

yrhengi · 13/02/2018 14:40

Yes, why was he washing his clothes? I wonder if he was just poaching a lamb or four for the pub's Sunday roast special...

scrabbler3 · 13/02/2018 15:16

I think Trudy's dad washing his clothing was a red herring as far as Carys was concerned. I reckon he'd been poaching lambs, without his wife's knowledge. Or maybe his top had Rose's lipstick/perfume on it.

rumbelina · 13/02/2018 16:22

There was a lot of talk of lamb dishes!

ToffeeUp · 13/02/2018 16:33

What about Kendrick's son, didn't he hint at something that happened to him or wanting to happen to him, maybe hoping for a cure by summoning the angels?

yrhengi · 13/02/2018 16:40

Oh! Was that it? That would make total sense... I'm going to have to watch this again, clearly.

Was it just my laptop or was there a lot of mumbling and messing about in the dark?

SilenceMeansWhatAreTheyUpTo · 13/02/2018 21:49

How did Matilda escape the first time around? Or was she never actually captured?

xmaspudd · 13/02/2018 22:20

@SilenceMeansWhatAreTheyUpTo

Janice (or whatever her actual name was) rescued her, somehow. That's why we see her take Carys out of the boot of the car after covering her wing mirrors in tape, and she tells Carys they have to keep going so the bad people don't find them.

Rumpledfaceskin · 13/02/2018 22:27

Xmaspud that’s a good theory re. The little boy! Im so confused by the ending. Why did they want to summon the angels?! Also did the antique lady take control of Matilda? Because I think there were only 4 graves in the woods at the end and shed said she wanted rid of the doctor and the Aussie boy, so is she secretly still in control and did she make Matilda kill them all and is she going to use her to do her bidding from now on?

SilenceMeansWhatAreTheyUpTo · 14/02/2018 12:58

Thanks xmaspudd - I got that about Janice rescuing her but I was confused because Matilda kept having dreams and flashbacks of being in the tunnel under the house so had presumably already been there, but I can't see how Janice would have been able to rescue her - unless of course she was also part of the "coven" at that time and somehow managed to divert the others?
Also - I don't understand what Bates having a bedridden son had to do with the plot? Unless he was planning to summon the angels to cure him or something like that? And the skeleton in the woods - why did the police hush it up - presumably the policeman who removed it was Bates? And maybe the other officer was Janice? And why did the coven give Davey a bracelet with the symbol on? #overinvested

Whenever I watch something like this, which is overly complex and leaves lots of questions unanswered, I'm reminded of what my late dad's considered response to similar programmes: "What a load of old cobblers!" Grin

yrhengi · 14/02/2018 13:03

I think the coven gave Davey the bracelet to lure Matilda to the house - so she would go 'with pure heart' in an attempt to save Davey from being used as a vehicle for the angels.

I don't think, as it turned out, that they intended to do that - they wanted Matilda herself - but they knew if she saw them targetting Davey, she'd be unable to resist coming back, hence the pantomimey way all three of them were like, 'Woo hoo! Here's a SPECIAL BRACELET for you, Davey! It's MAGIC! It'll KEEP YOU SAFE! It's EXACTLY THE SAME as the one we know Matilda has just heard was found on the wee boy skeleton!'*

*or possibly one they made her wear herself as a child? I don't remember if this was flagged up or not. #flubrain

Heatheroo · 14/02/2018 15:44

My take on the ending is: when Tilly entered the 'cave' the angel left her through the hole with the full moon and she fell back down. Hilary had mentioned that it wanted to get out, on the telly Tilly said of the music 'it has to get out' then she looks pointedly at the screen. Mirrors are a two-way channel and when she looks into the mirror at the end, it possesses her again, but a second glance and she's back to normal. She laughed when it left her the first time, and smiled again in the loo. She obviously feels good when it leaves even though she doesn't remember anything. The four graves were hilary's, kendrick's, and both satlows's. The angel saved Nick because he had no choice in the matter, and genuinely relented his part in it all. The angel used Tilly for its own ends, and as there IS a second series planned, I am guessing it will be stories of revenge followed by how Tilly finally breaks free altogether. Full moon, eating sheep etc, a nod to werewolves, but also to Uriel. The archangel hunter. It was an interesting story, and it took me a few repeats of the last episode before I could construe this theory!

DenPerry · 14/02/2018 17:23

Yet another BBC show that I've really enjoyed but then get to the last 10 minutes and I'm thinking "eh, it needs much longer to explain everything!" then I check IMDB to see if there are more episodes and no! That ending was bullshit.

SilenceMeansWhatAreTheyUpTo · 14/02/2018 20:12

Have to confess I whizzed back through the last episode Blush to see if I could work out the owner of the watch and sleeve, which we saw sticking out of the grave at the end! Clearly a man's, but which one? None of them seemed to fit. Confused

yrhengi · 14/02/2018 20:22

It’s Kendrick - didn’t he make a Big Thing about how he was given THIS WATCH LOOK AT THIS WATCH THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT WATCH OK on his retirement from the force?

SilenceMeansWhatAreTheyUpTo · 14/02/2018 20:26

Thanks, yrhengi - I must have missed that!

yrhengi · 14/02/2018 20:59

I bet they retrofitted the whole watch business when someone pointed out at the edit screening that there was no way of identifying who was in the graves.

Or... maybe Bates asked for too much money for Season 2 so they decided to make only one of the lead characters definitely dead.

colouringinagain · 14/02/2018 23:18

So glad I found this thread! I enjoyed it but have found it extremely puzzling!

So is Matilda now possessed by a dark angel - the black eyes thing at the end?. But so many questions.... What did they Starr with her as a child that they had to finish - possession??? ConfusedConfusedConfused

HateSummer · 15/02/2018 00:17

Just finished all the episodes and agree the last episode was quite rushed, which is a shame because I think episode 3/4 had my heart racing, especially the shower scene.

My question is why Rose’s husband kept saying “I won’t let you do it again, like last time” and something about not letting it happen to his son when he was arguing with her? Does Rose possess some magical powers that she passes to her children? Something her husband knows about? All odd.

Not sure I’d watch a second series..the last episode just didn’t explain anything and I’m not sure I’d want to sit through another 6 hours of drama building up to find out one nugget of information.

ImListening · 17/02/2018 16:44

Deliberately not reading this thread but just watching episode 1. I’m not gripped so is it worth watching all the way through. Or is it going to be another one where I feel I’ve wasted hours & then zilch. Hard sun, the replacement, trauma, I’m looking at you!

FiftyShadesOfDuckEggBlue · 17/02/2018 21:10

Just binged watched the entire series and came in here mainly to find out a) who was spared in the end (4 graves) and b) where her gorgeous coats where from, especially the black and white one.

DrRanjsRightEyebrow Thanks for looking this up, so annoying it turned out to be vintage! Grin
