Rhiannon I blame the whole "me too'" philosophy of most of the mainstream tv stations the race to the bottom (esp. in the most viewed times like Sat. evening)

It seems that unless there aren't screaming audiences and very LOUD music then the tv execs don't reckon the programmes will appeal to the 'youth' audience, which is obviously the most important one Halloween Hmm Haloween Sad Sad FGS.

RhiannonOHara · 19/10/2017 13:45

I think you're right, ppeat. I get that Strictly has to appeal to a young audience as in the children of a family, seeing as it's family viewing. But they go too much for the yelling-mob crowd, IMO.

CaveMum · 19/10/2017 14:00

It took until the Final of Series 2 for anyone to score four 10s from the Judges - Jill's Jive. The first time she did it they scored 39.

Sorry, don't know why that posted twice Blush

ppeatfruit · 19/10/2017 14:29

Rhianon At least it's not in WEMBLEY like effing XF. That makes SCD look positively restrained!!!!!!

DuckOffAutocorrectYouShiv · 19/10/2017 14:30

Yep, I agree lose the hysteria, bring back the two dances per show and the high scores later in the series.

My only concern with the two dances things is that seeing a 'natural' dancer like Aston or Alex do the same dance as a non dancer who is having a journey might affect the scoring and public view of the couple's achievements. It might make the progress of the strugglers less obvious because the (same genre) dances of the naturals are so fresh in the mind. Yes, I know that a struggler is highly unlikely to win the ball but even so. I can see that a variation of dances gives the 'journeyers' a better chance to be judged on their own merits (by the public, I'd like the think the judges are judging according to technique etc).

ppeatfruit · 19/10/2017 14:43

You mean 'more' obvious Duck ? They won't be doing the exact same choreo though will they? Perhaps someone who saw it when it was one or 2 dances per show will remember what it was like. I came in quite late to SCD (the hysteria put me off ) actually. It was the grace of Harry that got me hooked!! I sometimes watch with the sound low!

Ceto · 19/10/2017 14:58

Did Chris Hollins compete under the old system or the new one? ISTR he was in the struggling category quite a lot of the time, though he was prepared to put the work in.

I agree about the hysteria getting to silly levels. See also the way people go ape if someone on BGT or X Factor actually manages to sing in tune. I suspect that if I ever turned up in the audience at Strictly I'd get chucked out, due to the fact that I would absolutely refuse to take part in a standing ovation unless a dance 100% deserved it.

DuckOffAutocorrectYouShiv · 19/10/2017 17:09

No, I mean less obvious because they'll still look crap next to the high scoring Viennese Waltz (or whatever) that went before. Rather than if the dances that went before were completely different types. I know what I mean but perhaps I'm not making it clear enough. Obv the choreography will differ but I think the distance between the iffy dancers and the naturals will be clearer if they are dancing the same dances.

I've not seen the 'hours in training' leaderboard thingy on IT2 this time? Has it been on? That's always enlightening. Seeing how hard people are training and how it translates on the floor.

ppeatfruit · 19/10/2017 17:19

Duck Yes I think I get what you mean. It's more that we all want to see an improvement though don't we? Perhaps it wouldn't be so obvious, like Susan's, If they were dancing the same dance I don't know.

RhiannonOHara · 19/10/2017 17:21

I think one thing about doing the same dance every week is that they used to start off with dances considered easier (cha cha, tango, waltz) and progress. So even the duffers had a chance at getting some good early dances in, which probably helped their confidence and possibly encouraged more people to vote for them.

CaveMum · 19/10/2017 19:21

My dance teacher often says the Pros should not be allowed to choreograph complicated routines in the early weeks. They should be allowed to do official Syllabus choreography up to, say, Silver standard only for the first three weeks. This would allow the Celebs to concentrate more on good technique rather than flashy crowd-pleasing moves, which will benefit them later on in the competition as a lot of the principals apply across several dances.

CeeBeeBee · 19/10/2017 23:16

Watched ITT tonight and I admire Susan's approach to being a contestant on Strictly. She is fully committed in the learning and participating of the competition but more importantly, she just wants to enjoy the experience whether or not she gets into the final.

ppeatfruit · 20/10/2017 09:12

Cave Your dance teacher should direct SCD !! She\he sounds highly intelligent and perceptive , what a brilliant idea! How could she contact the programme?

CaveMum · 20/10/2017 09:25

I do love Susan, she's just Tweeted this:

"If you see me and want to say hello/ask for a photo I have one request. Don't say sorry. Never apologise for loving Strictly as much as I do"

ppeat she is very good! I'm lucky to train with her as she only does teacher training and amateur competition training these days, having handed over her "school" a few years ago. She's never trained competitive professionals before, though she's certainly good enough but finds it all too cut-throat!

I highly doubt the producers will ever go back to the way things used to be, it wouldn't be considered "modern" unfortunately.

ppeatfruit · 20/10/2017 10:13

Yes Cee she's so lovely and unspoiled. You can see that Kev. really appreciates her too. I loved that they examined that wonderful dress that Nadiya wore last week. I said there were godets in it!!

ppeatfruit · 20/10/2017 10:16

Cave I know she doesn't care if she wins but now she MUST!!!! Some young people like more thoughtful stuff. I don't know the BEEB think otherwise.

IhaveChillyToes · 20/10/2017 12:22

*BRUNO IS NOT GOING TO BE THERE THIS WEEK DUE TO OTHER WORK COMMITMENTS

TheSassyAssassin · 20/10/2017 12:26

I know...I just heard that too! Like what could be more important than tomorrow night??? Halloween Confused

The80sweregreat · 20/10/2017 12:26

I would love Susan to win it - trouble is the week she is up against someone who is better in the dance off. Unless she can avoid this of course. She has so much personality.

RhiannonOHara · 20/10/2017 12:31

Odd about Bruno. Not so much that he's got clashing work commitments, but more that he's only got one now, after 15 years...

Also, why didn't they get a guest judge on? They'll have to bugger about doing percentages and stuff to make the scoring fair, won't they?

Theromanempire · 20/10/2017 12:33

Sassy you do know it isn't Halloween week this week don't you?

Apparently Bruno's workload is too much due to the constant flying between here and the US (bit like Len who took a few shows off to recover) and it has always been in the plan Hmm However, I do wonder if they are doing it to try and get him to calm down a bit Grin

At least the show should be a bit shorter now although they may let Darcy ramble on for longer instead Confused

TheSassyAssassin · 20/10/2017 12:58

Love a new emoji me...sorry for peaking too soon! Halloween Grin

CeeBeeBee · 20/10/2017 13:34

Oh, it won't be the same without Bruno's entertaining comments. At least there won't be so much harping on about how Nadiya and Davood explode with sexual tension. Are they getting a guest judge in?
