GBBO - opinions?

What are people's opinions on the new Bake Off so far? And yes, I know we're only a few minutes in. IMO the new presenters feel a bit like they're trying a little too hard to be Mel and Sue.

Opinions?

I wasn't expecting to like the new series at all but Sandi is great, she seems to effortlessly keep the whole thing running whilst Noel wafts about mumbling charmingly to people. I don't really get his humour (the mighty boosh went right over my head) but he is sweet and kind to the contestants.

Prue is much nicer to the contestants than Mary, and has a strong, confident air. She is very watchable and I don't miss Mary at all. Sorry Mary. I don't miss Mel or Sue either or their annoying different ways of shouting BAKE.

haveacupoftea · 22/09/2017 03:06

Oh yeah I do agree though with PP that the bakers aren't very memorable. The mix isn't great this year, everyone is too good! What's Bake Off without a showstopper collapsing and being served up sheepishly by a flustered contestant in their late 60s? Or a slightly smug precocious school age contestant trying new flavours and getting it horribly wrong?

PurplePillowCase · 22/09/2017 19:58

just watching extra slice.
why is it asking me if I'm 16 or over?

ppeatfruit · 23/09/2017 09:35

Purple They don't pull their punches with language on ES. It's on late so maybe that's why? I loved Tom on it, he didn't come across as so sexy on the actual show did he? Oh I liked her Majesty too, much smilier than the real HM!!!!

PurplePillowCase · 23/09/2017 09:41

there is a whole thread about 4 on demand being for over 16 only and it showing inappropriate adverts.
that explains it.

NotAgainYoda · 23/09/2017 10:07

I am really enjoying it. If you like Noel Fielding then you'll like it - but even for those who were sceptical, I think he's coming across as warm and engaged with the contestants

NotAgainYoda · 23/09/2017 10:08

I like Liam - he's a local lad

NotAgainYoda · 23/09/2017 10:09

Prue doesn't say 'lair' when she means 'layer'

DistractedByAFatDog · 25/09/2017 12:30

I’m liking it.

Actually I’ve just rewatched all the previous series’ with the old cast and Sue really annoys me. Mel is lovely and warm and natural but Sue just tries too hard to be funny.

DistractedByAFatDog · 25/09/2017 12:32

My favourite contestants were Howard Who Worked For The Council and Norman who thought pesto was exotic.

Inkanta · 25/09/2017 17:01

Still too fast and furious for me. Doesn't stay still enough to get to know the contestants properly.

wowfudge · 26/09/2017 20:24

To me it's the same - the longer someone stays in, the more you get to know them. Lots of Hollywood Handshake envy this week.

Igneococcus · 26/09/2017 20:27

I don't like chocolate puddings or cakes. I'd like the peanut butter though.

3catsandcounting · 26/09/2017 20:29

Why are they staggering the timings with choc puddings? (missed a couple of minutes)

Igneococcus · 26/09/2017 20:30

because they can't sit around waiting to Be judged

3catsandcounting · 26/09/2017 20:31

Aah, yes, I see! Thanks.

LemonRedwood · 26/09/2017 20:33

It really irks me that the Hollywood Handshake thing is a gimmicky thing now. Handed out like school housepoints.

TurnipCake · 26/09/2017 20:42

Irks me that the innuendo used to be unintended and was actually funny. Now they're all trying to pack them in (fnar). At least Stacey talked about something other than her husband and children this week

mumofone234 · 26/09/2017 20:43

I agree LemonRedwood. It's a bit annoying now.

mumofone234 · 26/09/2017 20:50

My favourite Bake Off moment EVER was when Sue accidentally squashed Howard's bake with her elbow.

3catsandcounting · 26/09/2017 21:43

I'm just Shock at Julia only being 21!

BiglyBadgers · 26/09/2017 22:40

Phew! Just watched this week's episode and really enjoyed it. I had to watch the end through my fingers because I really like Liam and Julia, so didn't want either of them to go.

I thought Sandi was good this week and seems to have settled in now.

Steven is getting too smart for his own good and it seems like that could be his undoing. It's nice to see some of the others really shine.

PurplePillowCase · 26/09/2017 23:13

steven just annoys me atm. style over substance
I know it's heavily edited and we do not get to see the real contestants.

I liked the challenges today.

Theycalledmethewildrose · 26/09/2017 23:19

I just can't get into this series this year. In previous years, I eagerly knew what day it was on and looked forward to it all day. I know it is sad to admit that.

This time the programme is just far too long and I keep losing interest. When I record it, I fast forward through an awful lot of it. There aren't any clips showing the contestant's personalities and if I was paid, I couldn't remember even one of their names. The judges are fine but the format lacks enthusiasm and is dragged out. We also don't really see as much of the products being made. I find it extremely boring.

The show has completely lost its appeal for me.

SillyMoomin · 27/09/2017 07:09

I know what you mean wildrose

In all other years it’s been “oh no, X day is bake off day I can’t go out / swim / whatever”

This year I’d even forgotten it was on until my neighbour reminded me. It’s not done anything wrong per day... it’s just a bit dull. Not sure why though
