New thread ,as we are very close to the end of the other.

I'm in denial that it is nearly September.

I am looking forward to Flushing Meadows. I feels like ages ages since I was able to 'watch' any tennis.

Great photos, saffron.

I'm quite sad Raonic is out. He's another who has had a rubbish time since a great 2016.

Just got in, to finally get to watch something.

Bedene now playing for Slovenia again. I can't say i blame him. I think he's been treated pretty poorly during his time playing for Britain. And by other British players too. Funny how Konta is accepted as 'British' quite happily- its not that long ago she was very much an Aussi Grin. Maybe it's different if you are winning things .

Looking forward to the Del Po match.

Juan playing well.

I like Tiafoe- he's still young, and a good player. If he stays fit (which seems to be the big thing, these days) i can see him doing well.

But maybe not today.

Raahh · 16/01/2018 12:15

Whoop! well done Juan!

So good to see him back.

OP posts:
Raahh · 16/01/2018 12:17

Tiafoe has been unlucky, really. Roger first round in the US, and Del PO here. He is a better player than the score suggests.

Mind if I ask somthing? Cant get all the posts for some reason, so dont know if this has been metuioned, but the controversy about Margaret Court court:

so. wheter people agree with or like her views or not, shes entitled to her opinion on religious grounds no?

plus, they named the court after the tennis champion, not the religious person. yes?

plus, if there are hard core religious players also with religious views on gays (not that I personally share their views , but n oone questions other cultures religious beliefswhich may be the same regarding gays), I cant see or hear them saying theyll boycott the US Open cos its named after a Gay player and dont want to play there.

Am I over thinking this?

Raahh · 16/01/2018 13:47

Qui

it's a difficult one. I think it's come to the fore because the same sex marriage vote is so recent in Australia, and some of Margaret's comments about gay people have been awful, in the run up to the vote.

But the stadium was named after her sporting achievements, not her views- and a lot of (gay) tennis supporters are against re-naming it. I suppose it's about being the better person. I think it's wrong to put pressure on the players- who are there to play tournament and not make a political statement. I know a number of them have said if they are scheduled to play there, then so be it.

(and that was probably a bit waffly)Grin

She has said some really hideous things about gay people. Not 'just' not agreeing with marriage equality, but very prejudiced and unpleasant remarks.

Raahh · 16/01/2018 20:51

Saffron I know. She has some very extreme views, and not just now. She did in the past too.

I think Martina has a point, that despite her achievements, it's unlikely they would name a court these days, after someone who openly goes around saying 'the sport is full of lesbiansHmm'. And obviously not meaning that in a positive way.

And did you enjoy the rest of your day ? saffron

OP posts:
Saffronwblue · 16/01/2018 21:44

The day was fabulous thanks raah. A highlight was seeing hundreds of people happily exclaiming and running across a bridge to see Federer practise. It was like Jesus walking past. It was DS's first time and he was amazed.
Sadly back at work today and a bit sunburnt.

Raahh · 16/01/2018 21:56

SunburntGrin

I finally got my wussy rain hating dog to go for a walk . And got caught in a hail storm. Grin

Catching up with 5 minutes of the Nadal match before I have to take the dd1 to the school bus. At least his match being on early means I might get something done laterGrin

He's playing Mayer, who shares the exact same birthdate as Andy Murray.Grin

There's a few players born around 2 weeks of each other, including Fognini, Djok and Murray. There's another, but I've forgotten...

Raahh · 17/01/2018 07:16

And another good win for Kyle Edmund.

hugoagogo · 17/01/2018 07:20

I need to find a way to watch some of these matches.

Raahh · 17/01/2018 08:23

Leonardo gave Rafa a great match today- probably just what Nadal needed, given his lack of match pay going into the tournament. He's as good player, though. Mayer. Unlucky not to get a set from Rafa, at least.

The Kyrgios match has been annoying me- he keeps chewing his towel

everything about Kyrgios pisses me off, I'll add this to the list Grin

fortunately, Grigor is on the other Eurosport channel now , so i can turn over.

Come on Troicki!

OP posts:
Raahh · 17/01/2018 09:50

Dimitrov is off to a bit of a shaky start, but this McDonald is an new star in the making for the Americans, and he is playing pretty well, and not showing any nerves at all.

OP posts:
JaneJeffer · 17/01/2018 10:10

I'll have to try and find Eurosport on the useless box thing!

Regarding Margaret Court I don't mind the court being named after her for what she has achieved but she needs to keep her vile opinions to herself such as this about Martina Navratilova:
"great player but I’d like someone at the top who the younger players can look up to. It’s very sad for children to be exposed to homosexuality. Martina is a nice person. Her life has just gone astray"

Fuck off! What happened to judge not lest ye be judged?

Raahh · 17/01/2018 10:25

Well, quite Jane.

I wouldn't want my children looking up to someone Margaret Court, with her vile opinions. Hiding behind religious views, is cowardly, imo. And hardly preaches tolerance.
There will be a lot of people , not knowing much about her, who will now be looking her up, and discovering other things about her- such as her support fro Apartheid. She denies being racist but...

Raahh · 17/01/2018 10:27

Grigor has found his game in the second set, though.

OP posts:
Raahh · 17/01/2018 11:32

grr. I want to watch the Dimitrov match, but I have to go out!Angry

It could go either way at the moment if McDonald can keep his head. Grigor is not at his best.

OP posts:
Raahh · 17/01/2018 12:02

Well, i didn't have to go far, so i'm back- ouch to the bagel set.

OP posts:
Raahh · 17/01/2018 12:44

Shame that McDonald lost- he played really well. Can't really say the same for Grigor. I like Dimitrov, but he's quite inconsistent, and not always great in defeat.

OP posts:
QuiQuaiQuod · 17/01/2018 12:51

Agree with all responses to my post about Margaret Court court.

Hope Kyle and Konta go far.

lets see if Vandewenge (sp) goes bananas on court again Grin.
