Perhaps it is a group of men.

LilaoftheGreenwood · 11/04/2017 10:44

Ferrisday yes, and this was prefigured in the scene where they're putting all the footballs in the bag and Twine Boy is clearly in charge of that so I guess he is captain.

So all this means is there was some unwashed kit hanging around at Axehampton, again assuming we're right that Twine Boy is son of lord of the manor, that got grabbed and used in the attack.

So it may throw suspicion on someone totally innocent. (Tom Miller doesn't play with that team does he? That would destroy Miller if it's his DNA.) OR it may be Son of Taximan's, who may be innocent of the rape itself but is definitely involved in some way.

I definitely think it's going to turn out several men were involved somehow, it feels like that's where all the themes about a culture of misogyny is leading. And whenever two men have come face to face alone without any women or police present, they've had some kind of fight or loaded suspicious conversation, so there are clearly some links in the background there.

LilaoftheGreenwood · 11/04/2017 10:49

Omg if I were the writers this would go, "It matches Joe's DNA on our database" shock, horror etc, and then Joe is obviously swiftly proven to have an alibi being visibly miserable in Liverpool (anyone think in fact he may kill himself after all, following the conversation with Mark?), and then slowly Hardy/Miller realise if the DNA is a match for Joe it will also be a match for Tom...

Disclaimer: clearly know nothing about DNA.

hackmum · 11/04/2017 11:00

You could be right, Lila - in fact, I think DNA does work that way, more or less. And quite often in crime series, when you think the culprit is one person, the real culprit turns out to be a relative (wife or son) that you hadn't thought of, because the evidence pointing to one also points to the other, if you see what I mean. I do think it would be too much for poor old Ellie if the culprit turns out to be either her son or father!

VanillaSugar · 11/04/2017 11:42

I hope it has nothing to do with the Millers.

ScrambledSmegs · 11/04/2017 11:43

I wonder if they're going down the same route as the US version of Broadchurch? There were rumours that we would find out more about the murder of Danny Latimer this series, which could be part of it.

I have wondered, especially with the way Miller destroyed Tom's phone and laptop, if it's all going to come crashing down around her again. Really hope not because they've been great at writing some strong women, especially her. But I really can't help disliking Tom intensely, which leads me to suspect there's something going on there.

However, wouldn't Tom have been very young when the previous rapes were committed? How old is he supposed to be?

Fizzingwhizbees · 11/04/2017 11:59

I think he's meant to be about 15 in this series? Tom and Danny were both 11 in the first.

VanillaSugar · 11/04/2017 12:01

I do think that Tom killed Danny and Joe covered it up.

LIZS · 11/04/2017 12:02

They won't hold dna samples for the under 16s.

2014newme · 11/04/2017 12:03

Perhaps when they were looking at the screen. The dna on the sock had come back as no match?

Viperess · 11/04/2017 12:18

Does anyone except me think the series is a bit errrr....overrated?

I'd not seen the previous series.

Can't say I'm really that impressed. Olivia C and David T seem to have one mode of delivery: he's all angry, shouty, popping eyes, she's got that mummsy, care worn expression, trying to calm him down a bit....

The suspects are stacked up like a row of kingpins. We're being played by the writers.

I feel it's futile trying to guess who did it because like all writers, they keep back evidence we'd need to know then surprise us later on.

Not that impressed.

2014newme · 11/04/2017 12:22

No, it's just you.

LilaoftheGreenwood · 11/04/2017 12:25

Tbh the first series was amazing and I'm still forgiving it for that, I know all the community back stories and I'm invested now, dammit.

hollyisalovelyname · 11/04/2017 12:49

Viperess
You should have been on the
Series 2 thread.
It got panned on here.
Series 1 was very good.
Series 2 not very good.
Series 3 I think is very good.

Cagliostro · 11/04/2017 12:56

I loved series 2!

re condoms:

What if, yes, the dropped condom wrapper in location of Trish's rape belonged to SleazyJim, but was from his unsuccessful attempt at "sex up against the tree" with waitress, slightly earlier on party evening?

Waitress stated it was consensual until he got too rough. Someone like SleazyJim wouldn't be used to rejection, as he's clearly delusional that he's God's Gift to all women, so probably slunk off elsewhere, pride battered, to remove/ dispose of actual condom itself.

It might seem too coincidental that in same location as Trish's later rape (unconnected to Jim,and perpetrated by somebody else/ somebodies else), but for all we know, it could be a well-known spot to any locals involved with the sub-plot of dubious porn filming/ dogging/ er..."night fishing". Maybe they've already got covert cameras/ lighting rigged up?

And forensics would've sussed his fingerprints on wrapper, I suppose. (Unless he's into bdsm kinky gloves?) Grin

Still puzzled as to what makes SleazyJim's condom brand apparently so damn unique, though? Not as if they're niche HUGEbrand (a genuine make!), if from local pharmacy?

Graphista and Sapphire,
As PPs mentioned, well predicted re Leah! And being first to theorise about spyware!

Lila,
Have you complained to Aldi about your fajita trauma?? Dying to hear their response... Wink

Thalia: "What if, yes, the dropped condom wrapper in location of Trish's rape belonged to SleazyJim, but was from his unsuccessful attempt at "sex up against the tree" with waitress, slightly earlier on party evening?"

I think you're right. In fact, after episode one a friend of mine said she thought that when Trisha described hearing running water their assumption that it happened near the river could well prove to be wrong - maybe it was a different type of running water. Then of course they found the condom there so it seems possible that the condom was from Jim's encounter with the waitress, and Trish was raped somewhere else completely. And that they have been barking up the wrong tree all along.

purplepaisley · 11/04/2017 13:22

I think it was ex-husband, fuelled by Tequilla (possibly spiked, hence blackout), egged on by sleazy Jim, watched/videoed by Taxi Clive and Rope Boy. Not sure who pushed the wheelbarrow, though!

Don't think it was Ed, anyway.

LIZS · 11/04/2017 13:24

And Aaron?

Abraiid2 · 11/04/2017 15:13

YES, it has been quiet re Aaron in the last few episodes. How does he fit in?

HeyRoly · 11/04/2017 15:15

I don't know why some people are STILL so convinced that Joe Miller didn't kill Danny, and is covering for his son to this day Grin

I don't think there's ever been an indication that Joe's numerous confessions have been anything but genuine.

CarrieBradshawsScrunchie · 11/04/2017 16:03

Have they found out who owns that cottage yet??

LilaoftheGreenwood · 11/04/2017 16:13

No, and related, are Ed's caravans important? they came into one conversation when Ian wanted to move into one and Ed said no.

I feel like Maggie's storyline has got to tie in a bit more before the end too, it can't just be so that we can give her old schoolness a little cheer every episode and a half.

There's a lot to tie up!

BurnTheBlackSuit · 11/04/2017 16:34

I'm another one who is convinced Tom was actually guilty of Danny's death, but it was covered up by his Dad. But I hope he not connected to the rape, except maybe in the periphery- i.e. He's seen the video (but doesn't realise what it is)

I now think (through this thread) it was lord of the manor and his son, Leo (spyware, twine, football socks boy).

Fizzingwhizbees · 11/04/2017 16:44

It would make sense, but that's truly terrible detective work from Miller and Hardy if Leo turns out to be the manor owner's son and it takes them 8 episodes to make the link!
