The boys watching porn may just be to show how you end up with shifty shitty men like Ian, Jim, Ed, taxi driver, etc It starts young by not respecting women, watching porn, sharing illicit pics. Before you know it, you're cheating on your wife, 'stalking' the person you profess you love, raping someone at a party. You view women as objects that you can project your desire on to.

SapphireStrange · 06/04/2017 11:58

Maybe Ed was scrambling through the grounds of the house stalking her, hence the grass stains on his jacket, and maybe he saw something. I agree with this; it's too obvious that it would be him. I think there's still something to come out about his caravans/seasonal renters. Although they haven't revisited that idea since Ellie brought it up a couple of episodes ago.

Joe got off as his lawyer argued Ellie beat the confession out of him. I'm not sure about this. I thought she kicked seven shades of shit out of him AFTER he'd confessed?

Katie may well redeem herself; it would have to be something dramatic, but then again that would make for good drama Grin

I don't understand why Cath would agree to stay and move away with Jim, when even before she found out about his having sex with Trish she described her relationship with Jim to the police as "loveless”. I don't either. Is she just so ground down/trapped that she can't see another way?

Has it been established who rents the property near the crime scene? No. The cops went to it a few episodes ago and mentioned that they hadn't tracked anyone down. They seem to have dropped this thread for now, which could mean it's set to come back up again in a big way.

Have we seen much of Beth's baby this series? I thought it was
Chloe's? Confused Didn't she, Beth and Mark have a conversation about how proud they were of her for going back to her studies after the baby was born?

I am leaning towards the rapist being Jim. He could have been the breakdown service that didn't turn up –except he DID turn up, saw that the woman had abandoned her car and was walking, and took advantage. I wonder if Kath knows about this and that's what she said she could tear his life down about?

I can't quite explain the other rape though, of the woman who was walking home from the pub; I wonder if that was the taxi driver and he was/is in the habit of hanging around pubs and routes leading away from them, expressly to be able to prey on women walking home drunk and alone?

Sapphire,

Nope, Lizzie is definitely Chloe's little sister, Beth's no3 child Smile
broadchurch.wikia.com/wiki/Elizabeth_Latimer

Maybe any mention from Mark & Beth about their pride in her returning to school referred both to time out she would (presumably?) have needed after her brother Danny's murder, and that baby Lizzie was born not long after? (Series 2) Apparently Chloe looked after her during the trial.

I didn't watch series 1 or 2 (feel like I did though, thanks to so many brilliant plot snippets & explanations on these MN threads...thanks all; very helpful), so unsure about how much Broadchurch time elapsed between the 3 series?
But I think 3ish yrs (between series 2, when she was born, and 3?...so that's how old she is now)...happy to stand corrected, though!

Thanks, Thalia; I'm sure you're right. I feel a bit thick because I just carefully explained to DP (who also thought she was Beth's) that no, she was Chloe's, for the reasons I've given. Grin

The odd thing is I DID watch the previous series and don't remember Beth being pregnant. Confused

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 06/04/2017 13:17

Hey, no need to feel thick at all, Sapphire...

The best thing about these friendly MN Broadchurch threads is (so far!) no humourless obsessives jumping in angrily if anyone dares forget a single detail...I had a quick browse on a couple of other online sites, and reversed out quickly when certain know-alls were so damn rude to other posters Shock

This exactly. I think it's not so much about a single event (that everything is connected to), it's about how boys grow up to be men who mistreat women and all the ways those men mistreat women.

Sairelou · 06/04/2017 13:29

I can't remember, was it ever explained where Trish went between when she was raped and when she called the police?

DubiousCredentials · 06/04/2017 13:30

I assumed that when Tom's phone vibrated and Ellie looked at it and immediately porn started playing that he'd received an actual file, therefore indicating something more serious than "just" porn from the internet. He wouldn't have been sent a link to a porn website surely? And also it would have been obvious who it was from as it must have been a message or an email? Phones don't just randomly vibrate when porn is detected Grin

DubiousCredentials · 06/04/2017 13:31

Saire she said she was at home.

Sairelou · 06/04/2017 13:34

Ah yes that's why they took her bedding. Thank you.

SapphireStrange · 06/04/2017 14:10

Thanks Thalia!

Edsheeranalbumparty · 06/04/2017 14:36

She did, but it think the lawyers still went down the 'beat a confession out of him' route. She beat up a murder suspect, it's not great for the police Grin

Yes i think you are probably right actually. There has been a lot of emphasis this series on the shitty way women are treated. Hardy made a comment early on about the case making him 'ashamed to be a man'. Miller said something in her rant to Katie about having to work extra hard because she is a woman. I wonder when people will start coming out of the woodwork to say the portrayal of men is 'sexist'.

Wow, can't believe in some forums people get so sanctimonious about knowing everything about Broadchurch. I think i will stick with Mumsnet!

MusicToMyEars800 · 06/04/2017 15:05

Sapphire Beth was pregnant in the 1st series, I didn't watch much of the 2nd series so I am at a loss with some things too Grin

TizzyDongue · 06/04/2017 15:30

Do you think CreepyExhusband might be supplying porn to schoolboys? Could be why he needs something removed from Trish's laptop. (Though why would he use her laptop? How long have they been separated?)

SapphireStrange · 06/04/2017 15:38

I do wonder about creepy ex and porn, Tizzy. Although my gut feeling is still that he had spyware put on the laptop and that's why he was desperate for it to be wiped.

I think they've been separated less than eighteen months; when creepy ex spoke to the cops about Ed he said he'd had to warn Ed about stalking Trish about eighteen months ago, which presumably he would only do if they were still together then.

TizzyDongue · 06/04/2017 16:29

Spyware would fit in with the way he was about monitoring her behaviour - the disapproving and judgemental monitoring that it was.

Graphista · 06/04/2017 16:30

"I'm not sure about this. I thought she kicked seven shades of shit out of him AFTER he'd confessed?"

Yes WE know that but the jury etc didn't. And the police couldn't prove it took place after the confession was obtained - police corruption was believed to have occurred.

Beth was shown heavily pregnant in series 2, it was an unplanned pregnancy that was reason mark initially stayed with Beth despite marriage being on last legs.

I've seen all episodes but it's easy to forget stuff. Eg I've just been browsing wiki/wikia and been reminded Tom deleted a load of stuff to do with Danny from phone and laptop then too!

I've also learned Beth was only 30 in first series!

DubiousCredentials · 06/04/2017 16:53

I'm sure Ian said something about Trish having slept with half a dozen blokes in the six months since they split? But I might have misremembered.

SapphireStrange · 06/04/2017 17:08

Yes, he did, Dubious.

Thanks for the explanations, Graphista!

Dozer · 06/04/2017 17:30

Could Ian have been using spywear to spy on Trish and want to remove that from the computer?

I feel sorry for horrid taxi driver's step son: he seems scared and said, I think if he'd been co-erced into anything he might blow the whistle, unless perhaps his step dad threatened his mum. I feel sorry for him.

Think / hope millar's son is just a stupid boy who has bad attitudes and watches bog standard porn.

Taxi man had that lock up with the creepy drawer of (womens') "mementoes", including something of Trish's (?) too.

Graphista · 06/04/2017 19:17

Nae bother Wink I love wikia learn so much more about tv shows.

SleeptightDaisy · 06/04/2017 20:14

No ideas as to who the rapist is. But I'm loving this series if that's an appropriate thing to say with the rape storyline. DT as sexy as ever plus brilliant acting from him and OC.

GirlInterruptedOftenByKids · 07/04/2017 00:13

Beth gave birth in series two and was back in court next day. ..Mark carried a cushion in for her to sit on. Yknow...for realism Wink

LilaoftheGreenwood · 07/04/2017 13:28

Somewhat related to the Magic Indestructible Fanny of TV drama, it has been slightly annoying me throughout that Beth always has this amazing swishy blow-dry and cute on-the-shoulders cut that only lasts a week out of the hairdresser, because I don't think Beth would have that. It's unfortunate if the actor's hair really is that amazing, they should rough it up a bit! Part of why I love Miller is she looks like I do when I go to work - hair scraped back, look ok? yep.

NotJanine · 07/04/2017 13:37

what did I miss? What fanny?!
