FlowersBrew Bluesky

Shelagh's high neck uniform is the maternity version. Her usual one has the same neckline as the other nurses.

Vicar is known as HPV in the fandom (Hot Prison Vicar) because we first saw him in a prison. Referred to by those who aren't so keen as CPV (cold PV!). He's wetter than a haddock's bathing costume. The actor however is a different kettle of fish... Wink

BeyondUnderthinking · 14/03/2017 18:58

I think having violet pregnant after sheelaghs miracle pregnancy would be a step too far Grin
It might have been okay if sheelagh hadn't had that storyline?

Onegreatday · 14/03/2017 19:04

Shelagh - are you a show insider or a super fan? Apologies if I've missed it!

Onegreatday · 14/03/2017 19:08

Looks - I get the impression with Phyllis that she would have looked after poor elderly parents, who didn't have any inheritance to leave her, until her middle age and that's why she's a spinster. Also will have had a clandestine love affair possibly with a married man and that's why she didn't marry and is sympathetic to the gay couple, because she missed out on a chance at long lasting love and also she has loved outside of societal conventions.

Onegreatday · 14/03/2017 19:09

A spinster and a non-home owner, I mean.

ShelaghTurner · 14/03/2017 19:46

Merely a super fan although working on being an insider Wink.

Phyllis was illegitimate and we don't know much about her other than that. She implied that her father wasn't on the scene but she did mention him in passing early on. Similar situation with Barbara. When she first came she wrote a letter home to her parents. Then suddenly her mother has disappeared and only her father is mentioned in the latest ep. It's a bit confusing.

BBCNewsRave · 14/03/2017 21:25

Shelagh Shelagh's high neck uniform is the maternity version.

I assumed she would have made that herself, as there wouldn't actually be a maternity version...
But what about Phyllis?
And all the other women - why aren't they cold?! Gah at TV land rules.

Phyllis was illegitimate and we don't know much about her other than that. She implied that her father wasn't on the scene but she did mention him in passing early on.

Aha! So he could be old and rich somewhere, die, she is tracked down and left money/house as only living relative, then she can bring up the twins she ends up caring for (in my fabulous imaginary plotline)!

Phyllis would presumably be saving up during all her career, so she has money to retire with. Living in nursing accomodation would help with that. Also, it would just be kind of fun - a job like that where you are on call at all hours does lend itself to living communally like that.

I had a fleeting thought about Sister Julienne when she was just about to go & do the family planning reception. She had a distant almost sad look on her face (well to me she did) & I wondered if she had had a baby before she became a nun & had to give away. Though the look was probably one of uncertainty having to fit her religious beliefs with the idea/belief the pill would help women immensely.
I love Sister Julienne.

Unicornsandrainbows3 · 15/03/2017 04:02

I love her too.

SoupDragon · 15/03/2017 07:13

I didn't see Helen George on Strictly. What is her voice like in real life?

Pretty much the same as Trixie's :)

SoupDragon · 15/03/2017 07:15

Also will have had a clandestine love affair possibly with a married man

She inadvertently had one of those on-screen with the man whose wife had dementia. I don't think it got as far as anything physical but she was horrified when she found out about his wife.

Clawdy · 15/03/2017 07:34

Didn't Phyllis meet someone nice at some sort of language class? I had the feeling they developed a nice relationship.

Thinkingblonde · 15/03/2017 07:45

She did, she was horrified at first but they continued with the friendship. Can't remember what happened in the end tho.
I reckon she had fiancé who was killed in WW2

ppeatfruit · 15/03/2017 08:53

Yes they would've been very cold Grin. The old style huge coal fired boilers, for the institutionl central heating didn't work very well.

DH and I remember being cosy by the fire in the evenings and having to be torn away from the fire to go upstairs to bed in the freezing cold. With ice INSIDE the windows in the morning. Also chilblains !!

ppeatfruit · 15/03/2017 08:55

I rather like Trixie too. She's grown on me. By god the actress can dance very well indeed!

HairsprayBabe · 15/03/2017 09:04

Phyllis had it off with an american GI in the war, she mentions using "precautions" in the episode where we find out she was illegitimate. But I don't know if he died or just disappeared.

TreehouseRose · 15/03/2017 09:49

Hairspray - yes, and maybe she had a son who was taken to America by his father as he'd have a better life there. Or the father took child to America on pretext of him meeting family then coming back to marry Phyllis - but never brought him back.

HairsprayBabe · 15/03/2017 11:44

Ha! Ooooh the speculation!
I think being illegitimate herself she never would have let herself get in that "situation"

UNLESS - they were married and he pied her off taking the baby with him...

That is exactly what I thought as well, huge, bouncy, rubber contact lens shaped thing!

WonderMike · 15/03/2017 18:10

How the jeff did they get that carousel through the archway to Nonnatus House?
