No they can't make it a false rape claim. They really can't.

I am hope too that the new victim is either going to be know to the rapist or was raped by Creepy Convicted Rapist. Rather than the main story be just stranger rape.

I think the rape is going to have an easy solution: her ex did it.

The twisty turny stuff is going to relate to the creepy guy with the same MO, Lenny Henry's character and why he's so weird, and the case from the first season.

I think Ian's girlfriend (Teacher Sarah) is too new to have been the cause back then?
  1. Ed clearly has a thing for Trish; might they have already taken that further (on the quiet), after she officially parted ways with Ian? She maybe regretted it, let him down gently, remaining amicable as colleagues, yet he's still hoped for something more.

If Grumpy Jim suspects as much, whilst Grumpy Ed (rightly) suspects him of currently sleeping with Trish (Jim and Trish may be far more deeply involved, and lying about morning-of-party-shag being simply a one-off), that would explain the mutual dislike and aggro between them.

Don't believe either of them to be Trish's actual rapist, but motives to frame 'the competition' are there, though.

I really hope it's not a fake rape story twist I think that would be very irresponsible storytelling if so and I doubt they would go down to route.

Yes, I think you're right re:Beth. It definitely rings a bell about the vicar and her not wanting to work with paedophiles. Sorry if I confused everyone!

I really really hope it's not a set up between Kath/trish to get rid of Jim. I half suspect that the rapist might get off, or not have enough evidence to charge him (in an attempt to be 'true to life') but I hope they aren't going to make this into a cry rape scenario.

That's the point of this thread though isn't it? For us to wildly speculate! I don't for a minute expect my theory about Hardy to be correct but imagine for a minute it was. After the last episode I'd be on here posting oh I thought that theory but I didn't post as it seemed too far fetched. You'd all be saying yeah right Button whatever.

I too hope the fake rape storyline isn't the way they go (along with my own theory about Hardy) but don't forget this is Broadchurch. They want people talking about it for the amazing ending, not because it went out with a whimper.

Freedom of speech and all that jazz.

Don't they sometimes show false flashbacks in dramas where there are numerous possible scenarios?

So if the flashback with the death of Danny wasn't real, then maybe the one with Trish at the party wasn't either??

Re: Jim's condom stash (sorry someone posted but can't scroll back) I don't think they said he and Trish had unprotected sex? After the examinations they'd said the rapist used a condom, I assume that means there was no semen at all so Jim must have used a condom too. The DNA they found from Jim must've been from mouth swab etc

Oh also I do think Hardy's DD is in the phone 'porn' because that will move the whole "how did you not see it right under your nose" thing onto Hardy, when Miller had faced that accusation before.

I think that Broadchurch was intended to be a trilogy supports the hypothesis that millers son killed Danny and joe covered up.

I've always liked that millers character changed realistically, do you all remember how naive she was in s1ep1? 'Nobody I know could do this'

Trish not gay I don't think, bi is a possibility but I don't think gay.

Trish and Caths attitude to Sarah DOES suggest that Sarah was ow.

I really don't believe it's a false allegation of rape and I would be massively disappointed if the Broadchurch people go that way.

The 2 rapes being so similar,

A 50 shades/Rape culture/rape fantasy sites/porn have a LOT to answer for

B possible 'apprentice' scenario, earlier rape by creepy rapist had a willing observer who has now become a rapist himself? We don't know who creepy rapist knows/was friends with back then. We don't know if he was in jail for that rape.

I don't for a minute condone promotion of victim shaming or skewed presentation bias. I am well aware of the issues surrounding sexual violence in society both on a micro and macro level.

I am also, as a hobby, speculating about a fictional, non-didactic TV show.

Not sure where the promise of myth-busting came from but if they do take that stand then I think the angle of the main players all being complicit without realising would really pack a punch - particularly when related to the porn.

Video evidence distributed amongst the men at the party - they didn't know it was rape until the investigation was underway. It would mirror the porn plot well. We have no accurate stats on how many women are coerced (physically or circumstantially) into porn and are effectively raped for entertainment value. So yeah, if they're looking to make that statement premptive then I agree that the plot will be wildly different.
