Will anyone here be watching?!

OP posts:
BookABooSue · 08/03/2017 13:11

No idea who the rapist is but I don't think it will be Lenny Henry. I think they're trying to make an important drama about rape. Dipping into any possible racist issues would detract focus.

StVincent · 08/03/2017 15:06

Having totally missed series 1, and watched 2 despite it being essentially shit, I'm finding this surprisingly brilliant.

My money is on either the ex-husband or possibly "hot rope guy" , I reckon they'll try to keep it true to life by playing on the idea that he didn't "have" to rape her because in theory she might have had sex with him anyway. So playing into that idea that it's about power and control rather than frustration or lack of sex or blah blah.

TreeTop7 · 08/03/2017 16:25

Yes definitely StVincent.

The Fall was interesting in that the perpetrator was a handsome, fit man as opposed to some seedy sweaty little git. People would argue that he could obtain sex whenever he wanted so he wouldn't need to rape somebody, missing the fact that it's about power. I also remember the argument that as a footballer, Ched Evans could have had sex with any number of willing women and therefore didn't need to force anyone (I don't mean to open up an Evans debate on this thread, but irrespective of his guilt/innocence there will always be people who think that physically/socially attractive men can't really be rapists).

So, I wouldn't be surprised if the Broadchurch rapist were a textbook hottie. Rope man, maybe.

And yes to Beth's hair. It's gorgeous.

Cary2012 · 08/03/2017 16:35

StVincent, you must beg, steal or borrow series 1, it was fantastic.

ElspethFlashman · 08/03/2017 16:47

I don't like Beth's hair, sorry. It's just triangular!

Lenny Henry's character is a dark horse so far as he's had very few lines. Kath's husband described him as what, a prick was it?

I'm looking forward to seeing more of him as LH is very good at doing an unnervingly cold hooded eyed stare.

Taxi Boy is too twitchy and shifty by far - whoever said it was dealing drugs in the car park is probably on to something as it was obviously a very messy party.

Btw Taxi Boy is familiar. Is he George Warleggans horrible agent in Poldark?

Cary2012 · 08/03/2017 17:23

I think Lenny Henry will feature heavily in future episodes, I hope so, I so agree with Elspeth that he plays these sort of characters so well.

I don't think he's the rapist but wouldn't be surprised if he's wrongfully arrested at some point.

Long series, loads of twists and turns to come.

I don't like Beth or the Latimers at all.

Am hooked, can't wait for next Monday!

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 08/03/2017 17:34

I called series 1 after the first episode too... but they've made it too difficult this time around... everyone is shifty and weird!

Loopytiles · 08/03/2017 17:36

All the more suspects that way!

BookABooSue · 08/03/2017 17:40

I love the Latimers. I'm glad they're in it because it shows the impact that the murder is still having on them. Plus I think they're both fab actors.

Loopytiles · 08/03/2017 17:42

Wasn't the plastic bag filled with blue rope (missed by police?) picked up in the dark from Lenny Henry's shop?

I think the rapist will be young. Rope guy was most horrible of all the suspects at first meeting (followed by ex H) but taxi guy had had a drink with trish, perhaps felt entitled to sex / angry at being knocked back l.

Perhaps LH will be a suspect and disappoint his daughter somehow, eg revelations about the sex party, how he treats women? They didn't seem to have a great relationship on the doorstep, eg no hug hello.

There could be a trial in a future series, and the rapist be found not guilty, or perhaps CPS not prosecuting, showing the unfairness of the justice system on rape. This could bring back anger for Beth.

Loopytiles · 08/03/2017 17:43

I mean the bag was from LH shop.

Ruby2202 · 08/03/2017 20:45

Max- thanks very much.

Also wondering where's the mother of David tenants daughter?

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/03/2017 17:48

Double standards with ex dh. He's got a gf and has sex so why can't wife ?

DNA should be taken from all babies born for things like this

Would stop a lot of crime

Said it on e1 I still feel Lenny henry is a suspect

Graphista · 09/03/2017 21:24

It's already been said this will be final series but I wonder if rapist will be caught before end of series and we'll see the trial too.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/03/2017 21:34

Wasn't there a second crime being investigated alongside the trial from S1 in S2? Have I just completely imagined that? The dark haired woman and the previously unsolved crime that was why DT was in broadchurch?

Think DT 's daughters mother is dead? Or is that Shetland?

IAmNotAUserNumber · 09/03/2017 22:15

bear yes, a young woman had been killed and the guy who spent a lot of time banging in fence posts was implicated, as was his dark-haired partner who inexplicably was hiding in DT's cottage while he lived in BC. DT had failed to get a conviction at the time. Something to do with a necklace.
Can't remember how it was resolved.

BookABooSue · 09/03/2017 22:43

DT's ex was alive in series 2. Wasn't she a policewoman and she had an affair?

Cagliostro · 10/03/2017 00:13

Just watched episode 2. Really good. Uncomfortable watching the interview though, I remember in mine (as a teen) having to clarify what happened physically, so it was hard to see that. But it was so, so well done.

Cagliostro · 10/03/2017 00:16

Yeah DT's ex was alive as he was meeting her in s2. The historic case (sandbrook or something?) was resolved at the end of s2, there were 3 people involved in those murders, I think they were arrested at the end of the series

BookABooSue · 10/03/2017 06:39

Cagliostro Flowers

Theworldisfullofidiots · 10/03/2017 06:46

We think it was multiple rapists.

BookABooSue · 10/03/2017 09:37

Theworld your post made me Grin because I had visions of the Queen not only watching Broadchurch but posting on MN to discuss it with us.

SapphireStrange · 10/03/2017 11:58

I called series 1 after the first episode too

Mary, how on earth did you work it out so fast?

Anyone else wondering what's going to happen with the local paper thing? There were two significant scenes about it (the first one was loooong, and a bit dull!) –it must be going to be brought into play? Is she going to stumble on the truth but not be allowed to report it or something?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/03/2017 12:16

Yes that's right. And yes, dt's wife was around in series 2- I'm getting confused with Shetland where the mother is dead.

I should have watched the previous 2 series before this one, I get so confused!!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/03/2017 12:18

The local paper has been a recurring subplot in both series hasn't it? Wasn't the editor we saw in series 3 having a relationship with the lawyer who was supposed to get justice for the Latimers but didn't?
