Will anyone here be watching?!

There are bits I don't understand as I didn't watch the previous two series.

Can anyone give me a run down of the previous two series? Were Beth and her ex the parents of the murdered boy? Is this why they split up? Was the female police officers ex husband the murderer? And he got away with it?

Was series two just the court case for the murderer and how did he get away with it?

SleightOfMind · 07/03/2017 21:42

Heard an interview with JH talking about Ep2 where she said the rapist's identity would be revealed.
Watched all agog and was none the wiser. Not a fucking clue.
Am bloody glad you lot think the same. Thought I'd lost my edge.

YY to the nod to OC's Green Wing character with the handbag snack. Banished a lovely faded chocolate coatigan for fear of Becoming Harriet.

Liked S2 - good to see the aftermath/effect on family of violent crime centre stage in a police procedural.

Also glad to see the Latimers' ongoing story arc for the same reason but Beth as Trish's councillor feels a little forced.

Tick-Tock till next week.

maxiflump1 · 07/03/2017 21:54

Ruby: yes Beth and her ex were the parents of the little boy who was murdered in the first series. They split up because he was having an affair and they couldn't cope with the trauma of losing their DS.

The female cops husband was the murderer and confessed at the time but whilst in custody his wife attacked him as she was so angry. They were pretty much best friends with Beth and Mark. He was then found not guilty as his defence was that she forced him to confess. And yep series 2 was pretty much dealing with the trial with another back story thrown in about one of David tennants previous unsolved cases.

Hope that helps?!?!

mostlymindblown · 07/03/2017 21:58

On no basis but gut feeling I think that the taxi driver man was Mr Saturday morning.

Also that it's not the ex husband, as I think having been married for so long she would have probably recognised it was him due to his voice, weight, smell etc?

rollonthesummer · 07/03/2017 21:58

Heard an interview with JH talking about Ep2 where she said the rapist's identity would be revealed.

Who is JH?

Unlikely that they were ever going to reveal the identity of the rapist in episode 2, surely?

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 07/03/2017 22:09

I'm getting confused by the timeline, was the party Saturday night? When did she report it Sunday or Monday?

Would make sense if the person she had sex with on Saturday morning was married (the best friends husband?) Lying to the police is never going to end well though.

The taxi driver is very dodgy so he is currently top of my suspect list.

Akire · 07/03/2017 22:12

It was Monday night when rang police it was Monday morning/lunch time she got home and late afn when they gave team the talk so that's why girl dectives was asking about why so long given nearly two days had past

NapQueen · 07/03/2017 22:19

I think That Katie will pull the old "what do you know, OC, you didnt even know you were married to a murderer"

Odd, on reflection, the technicality that got Joe Millers conviction quashed:- he volunteered his admission of guilt before OC kicked seven bells of shit out of him. He had Dannys phone. They had emails of proof from danny to joe and vice versa going way back. They had the cash found in Dannys room which would have presumably had Joes dna on.

He can say she forced a conviction all he likes - the evidence speaks for itself.

ElspethFlashman · 07/03/2017 23:02

When did Beth and Ellie become friends again? I thought Beth hated Ellie after the trial?

I do hope Mark L goes after Joe Miller. I know I always say the Latimer's annoy me hugely but his acting was excellent in that little scene talking to the vicar.

I have a theory that Lenny's name was in orange as he was one of the few people Julie Hememememough had spoken to at the party?

I haven't a bog why Ian was washing his clothes and shoes but I think it's a red herring as he looked oblivious during the police interview. He's shady in some way but I doubt he's the rapist.

I also think Rope Boy is a red herring as he's far too obvious, with the cockiness and the pervy postcards on the wall. He's probably just a common or garden twat.

TreeTop7 · 07/03/2017 23:04

Horrid misogynistic ex, expecting Trish to be teetotal and sexually inactive when he's neither!

I agree that she'd instinctively have recognised him as her rapist though. I've ruled him out!

I wonder whether the Latimer daughter is going to be connected to the fishing line guy or to the taxi driver. She was in the first ep, which implies that she's going to have some kind of story.

I'll go against the grain and say that I really enjoyed S2.

NapQueen · 07/03/2017 23:14

Elspeth I wondered that. Im about to atart rewatching S2 so if anything lends itself as to why they became friends again Ill let you know.

I read a magazine article which listed Sunetra Sarka as a Main Character which suggests to me she will be much more heavily involved.

They worked heavily with Dorset Rape Crisis though so Od imagine if she is involved it wount be anything thay could cloud the public perception of the service.

Graphista · 07/03/2017 23:21

Thanks AF.

Sunetra may become a 2nd victim. They seem to be erring toward giving the impression this is a potential serial rapist.

Optimist1 · 07/03/2017 23:25

I enjoyed it as well; I was particularly struck by the conflicting demands of allowing the victim to progress at a rate she was comfortable and the need to determine whether her attacker was posing a threat to other women. The anguish Julie H portrayed was very touching - she obviously has stuff she's uncomfortable in revealing.

Arkengarthdale · 07/03/2017 23:27

Maybe the 'big names', Lenny Henry, Charlie Higson, Julie Hesmondhalgh, Sarah Parish etc are just testimony to the success of Broadchurch first time round. It was astonishingly successful and had a lot of the nation gripped. I remember the thread on here! Who wouldn't want to be part of such a drama. Like Happy Valley and Line of Duty and this year's excellent dramas. Good on anyone's CV.

fairycakecentral · 08/03/2017 06:58

I haven't a clue who the rapist is - they all looked dodgy to me after that episode.

Going with the sex party idea (the 50 men But only 20 women). We (me and DH) thought that was why Charlie Higson was acting weird. He said his new partner felt she wasn't made welcome so she left the party. Maybe he was introducing her to her 1st sex party and she didn't like it, thought it was weird. He stayed and didn't like that Tish was 'cavorting' (I think that's what he said) with other men. He's got a dam cheek!

We did think we were onto a winner with that idea when Tish was reluctant to say when she last had had sex but when she said Saturday morning, it didn't look so winning after all.

Not sure why Charlie Hinson wouldn't give a DNA sample. am I right in thinking that when the police interview him he's not aware that it was his wife who was raped? imwonder what he did at the party then to be worried about having left DNA.

Really dislike the young police officer but I think we're meant to. I think that's a red herring.

The80sweregreat · 08/03/2017 07:05

Julie H is very good in this, the acting is brilliant.
was charlie higson on the fast show?
the men are all so dodgy on this show!

KittyOShea · 08/03/2017 07:13

Maybe Lenny's name was in orange because he and the mechanic had a fight?

My theory was it was the vicar- he wants to be needed and the church to be busy again like it was after Danny's murder.

fairycakecentral · 08/03/2017 07:35

I felt for the vicar - he feels frustrated that people only need him when they are in crisis, mark Latimer goes on about dealing out justice, vicar looks so pissed of but then does the right vicarly thing and talk kindly yo mark. The vicar.s going to blow his top sometime soon.

Loopytiles · 08/03/2017 07:35

Poor vicar: suspect for child abuse of boys, murder, and now rape! The actor does have a shifty face!

Really good stuff on sexism throughout the episode: the ex H's speculation/judgment on Trish's sex life, the topless pics in the rope place etc. Even the inspector's poor handling of the timing and Qs in the evidence interview. His stated motivation was public safety, but he was impatient and lacked empathy for Trish, and they totally undermined Beth by turning up at the cafe.

Loved the line after the interview with the obnoxious rope place man - something like "I'm never in the mood for [something] young shits", and the look on OC's face.

cowgirlsareforever · 08/03/2017 07:57

They all look guilty. Wonder if they all did it? Sad

snoopyokay · 08/03/2017 08:12

Kitty I like your theory!

WoodYouBeHappy · 08/03/2017 08:51

MN is an excellent source of Broadchurch information. I always miss bits & catch up here. This article also filled some gaps for me. (Don't read it if you haven't watched Ep 3) Smile

Does anyone else really like Beth's hair?

MrsGuyOfGisbo · 08/03/2017 12:15

Does anyone else really like Beth's hair?
yes!!! Grin
KittyOShea love that theory!!!

NapQueen · 08/03/2017 12:42

Where is @everlong ? She called it on season one after only the first episode. Legendary.
