I really enjoyed the book so looking forward to this. It's in 4 parts with Emily Watson playing the main character and Ben Chaplin as her lover. BBC1 9pm

Good article about it here.

I couldn't work out how the person hit the car either. Had she been conveniently parked under a balcony I would have assumed the person had been thrown off but she was over the road and a car length down the street wasnt she? I'm not sure how anyone could have got from the house to the car with such force without her noticing. I did think the colour was wrong for BC though.

I doubt the message on the flowers was important, it just bugged me that I missed it!

SoupDragon · 29/01/2017 22:29

Ah... Xposts re the card :)

Braceybracegirl · 29/01/2017 22:29

SoupDragon you remembered it much better than I did!

minisausage · 29/01/2017 22:30

Maybe George and BC are in it together?

minisausage · 29/01/2017 22:31

My mind is going over drive. Maybe they are in it together to frame her for something

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 29/01/2017 22:31

I've read the book

I can't remember all that happens so don't want to spoil it for anyone

I did get caught up in how Yvonne feels about Mark and their affair and it is more erotic and violent you are blinded by her emotions and that's hard to portray in a short series but I think its really good still (and from preview of next week I think we get to understand her better)

Worth reading the book

PassTheCremeEggs · 29/01/2017 22:37

Book is definitely worth reading. Mystery man seems much more three dimensional in the book I felt. I think he's been given a pretty poor script in this - it's hard to really engage with him as a character.

I read the book after ep 1 because wanted to know what happened and am glad I did - it hasn't ruined the TV series for me.

Blockbuster1 · 29/01/2017 22:39

I didn't see anyone hit the car. (not from above) I thought it was someone banging on the window.

A few things don't add up:

How did she and affair man know where George lived? (Maybe she had his details through work)

Why did Mr X get access to the house where George was simply by ringing the bell? Who did he say he was?

Why is Mr X pretending he is Intelligence or similar? She ought to know that anyone who really IS in intelligence is given an alias/ fictitious job like 'I work in a boring job in IT'. They don't imply they are in intelligence at all!

On another note, is the guy who played the 'advisor' telling her what her options are, the same actor who is a cop in current series of Silent Witness? (That had me really confused!)

Frouby · 29/01/2017 22:40

Don't tell me to read the bastarding book!

Everything I have ever read apart from The Green Mile has been disappointing on the telly. I read all the time and rarely enjoy telly so it's a bit of a novelty for me.

Am not a snob about tv, I just usually start watching something and then get distracted and never get round to watching it again. But sunday night is good for me cos the rest of them go to bed early.

minisausage · 29/01/2017 22:45

If George and X are in cahoots? It could be to do with something she's done in the past?
I don't think I'll be able to buy and read book by Sunday

Stradbroke · 29/01/2017 22:46

When they got the taxi home together after George raped her I think the taxi stopped at George's house and he got out. So she would know where he lived.

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 29/01/2017 22:47

'How did she and affair man know where George lived? (Maybe she had his details through work)'

Remember they got the taxi together after he raped her and he was dropped off at his house first.

BootCampSucker · 29/01/2017 23:03

I reckon (haven't read the book) that they've somehow got the wrong house and Mr X has killed someone else, because he's not actually a spy and didn't do things 'properly' ie stop to find out if he was actually killing the right person.

Another one here who's fancied BC like mad since Game On days.

NigellasGuest · 29/01/2017 23:07

I forgot BC was in Game On - I googled him and came up with this Burger King advert with him in!

20 odd years ago I worked in headhunting and needed a fake name for doing research calls, so I gave myself the surname Chaplin. Like we were married Blush

Sagethyme · 29/01/2017 23:36

I can't wait for next week, but won't have a chance to read the book between now and next week, just down loaded the audio-book....i'm actually looking forward to tackling the house work tomorrow!

Deux · 29/01/2017 23:46

I enjoyed this episode much more than last week's.

Some of my meandering thoughts.

The flowers and the text message from George. I did wonder if they really were from him and were maybe from BC. That he was in fact a bit of a nut job and was messing with her head. Or to ramp up her fear so he could increase her dependence on him.

At the end, I'm sure that the left hand than smacked against the car window had blood on the palm. Did anyone else see that?

Meetyhags · 29/01/2017 23:52

deux yes I thought I saw blood on the palm to. Definitely more exciting this week than last! Every hypothesis I've come up with I've managed to find a counter argument.

Meetyhags · 29/01/2017 23:52

Too, not to

rollonthesummer · 29/01/2017 23:53

Was the text message from George about liking her new hair sent from the new phone bought for her by Ben??

I haven't read the book but am really enjoying this! Fab acting by Emily Watson-the rape and aftermath was horrible.

rollonthesummer · 29/01/2017 23:56

We don't know he was an important, 'civil service' type, I suppose.

There must be a significance to him pointing out the security cameras?

Deux · 29/01/2017 23:59

I can't remember the time line. Did the text message and flowers come after she said to BC that she didn't want to see him again? I'm trying to remember which event was the tipping point in her contacting him. Was it when she 'saw' George in the shop?

Getting confused. 😕

Deux · 30/01/2017 00:04

Another thing. In the flash forward, the woman in the gallery. My thoughts went along these lines, hmm who's that, can't be BC's wife as I'm sure the wife of a spook wouldn't behave in that manner, then again maybe he's not a spook.

When Yvonne picked up BC he was carrying a large hold-all so if it's not him returning to the car at the end, I wonder if the bag will reveal anything.

Merlin40 · 30/01/2017 00:04

Are the texts actually from BC, not George? Is george not actually stalking her?

Must. Read. Book.

Meetyhags · 30/01/2017 00:05

I think it was after the works email when George asks her to book the hotel
