Thanks, pants. That series was much better than anything since, imho.

iwouldgoouttonight · 07/01/2017 21:40

I've actually been out and bought chalk paint today. DP is despairing.

Brillig · 08/01/2017 10:53

I was coming on to say Fiona Wilson did the chair but NewPants got there first Grin

Fiona was in the very first round of that series iirc, and I really liked most of what she did right from the outset. She just had such utter confidence and unflappability. So much so that for the first (and so far last) time ever I correctly predicted that she'd be the series winner - although there was the inevitable humming and hawing from the judges that she maybe wasn't quite sufficiently raving bonkers 'out there' in her 'vision'.

Fine by me, I can't stand most of the appalling crimes that pass for cutting-edge design statements in the programme.

absolutelynotfabulous · 08/01/2017 12:00

I'd love to see that first series again......

bblondemoment · 08/01/2017 13:02

Just seen the Hoppen (who's designs I actually love) on Sunday brunch, she said when the next rounds start the judges are allowed to bring back a wild card

SwedishEdith · 08/01/2017 13:30

Yes, I've just seen her as well and was shocked slightly she drank alcohol - assumed avocado juices only.

Brillig · 08/01/2017 17:30

I missed Wednesday's episode (couldn't quite get up from the dinner table, leaving our guests to their own devices while I enjoyed the GIDC Grin) so am just catching up.

The woman with the budgie in a cage and flowery cushions....speechless. Also - why did actor/theatre director man spend HOURS sanding down that tiny, tiny table when, as every fule kno, chalk paint is the law in this programme??

This reminds me of Kelly H, btw...

ppeatfruit · 09/01/2017 09:57

Annoying that it's on at the same time as the Lose Weight Sen
sibly (or something)! programme my machine won't record 2 progs. at the same time so I have to jump between them, I'd like to record them both.

Has anyone noticed that the judges TALKED (only once though) about respecting the age and look of the buildings but wouldn't even think about any of the contestants doing the same.

Nodowntime · 09/01/2017 16:35

Brillig Fiona was in the very first round of that series iirc, and I really liked most of what she did right from the outset.

As far as I remember, Fiona was in the second series, and she didn't win, she was a runner-up. Which I expected - at the end of the first series it was a female designer with a few kids against a male (gay) designer, and they chose her the winner (though later I read on the internet that she already had an established career and was a published author of upcycling project type of book(s), so wasn't strictly an amateur). So at the end of the second series it was again, a mother of four, against a youngish male (gay) designer, and I just had a feeling even if they were equal in design, they couldn't make the same choice again, would look biased, that that she'd have to be the runner-up.

Anyway, the first two series quality of contestants was by far the best, it's been downhill since! Don't even remember who won last year, it was all dismal. This year looks slightly better to me. Couldn't join the thread last year, with a baby was so behind on watching that never could join the discussion! Now with a two year old turned it on by accident mid-way through first episode, didn't even realise new series were on! Will watch anyway, really great to have an insider again as well!

Brillig · 10/01/2017 08:52

nodowntime you're absolutely right. Just checked, and she was a runner- up - so much for my memory! (I didn't say she was in the first series though, I said she was in the first round/programme of the series she was in, iyswim, and she did then go through to the final).

For me she was definitely far and away the best designer that year, and in terms of confidence and overall grasp of what she was doing, plus listening to the clients, she always seemed on top of it. A lot of the contestants don't have this. It makes me cringe when they dismiss what the homeowners say and plough ahead with their own fixed ideas come hell or high water.

absolutelynotfabulous · 10/01/2017 13:20

Cripes I've just painted a chair purple..yikesShock.

NewPantsforaNewYear · 10/01/2017 14:10

How did it turn out abs?
I've watch an awful lot quite a lot of videos about it but noti been brave enough to try yet.

Honaluuhuu · 10/01/2017 14:17

Looking forward to tonight's episode. Placemarking to join in on the live discussion later. Very much enjoying it so far but no stand out winners to me yet. Still love the 2lovelygays who won in the same series Fiona did, their instagram is good fun. I do miss Sophie this series but respect Kelly a great deal and love her honesty. If they're no good, she's so far not shy to say it and won't look for a way to compliment to soften the blow of a criticism

absolutelynotfabulous · 10/01/2017 14:38

pants it was a grungy dirty cream before. I didn't take a photo, alas.

I didn't use chalk paint, just an ordinary emulsion. It's called Pamper Night. I didn't have any chalk to add, so I used ......Vim.

It's drying now, and needs another coat, but actually looks ok. I'll post a pic if it turns, out ok.

ZaZathecat · 10/01/2017 14:50

Looking forward to tonight's episode. I love this show, though agree with most of you that the designs are usually crap. God that scalloped green litter tray! And those monstrous black doors!
If this is what interior designers are like I will NEVER be hiring one. (Don't worry, real interior designers out there - I couldn't have afforded you anyway.)

absolutelynotfabulous · 10/01/2017 16:32

I kind of "got" the black doors, in a way. The designer said that the object was to take the eye upward using a dark dramatic colour, to emphasise the high ceilings. I think he achieved this, and he was the only one in my recollection to actually think about the space, and the impact of colour on it. Having said that, I don't understand why he couldn't have just painted the existing doors black Confused.

SapphireStrange · 10/01/2017 17:24

I liked the doors too. The thing about 'respecting the architecture' was quite unfair of Daniel and Kelly, I think; the brief asked for an international luxury hotel vibe, and beautiful as the doors were, they didn't fit.

He wasn't allowed to paint or otherwise touch the surfaces because they're part of a listed building.

absolutelynotfabulous · 10/01/2017 17:44

Ah! So he wasn't able to paint the doors...that makes sense, now. Smile.

Actually that was quite a tricky brief, and not at all in keeping with the building! I think that designer pulled it off.

CremeEggThief · 10/01/2017 17:48

Marking my place for tonight!

KenDoddsDadsDog · 10/01/2017 19:36

Oooh mock Tudor houses

ElspethFlashman · 10/01/2017 19:48

I think my problem with the doors was that they were matte.

A glossy black would have looked more like an upmarket hotel and less like MDF

dillite · 10/01/2017 20:04

Good evening!

Look at that- Kelly is wearing colour!
