As part 3 is full.

I'm having a day off due to illness, so am planning a re-watch from the beginning as have got used to the time switches that confused me at first. Quite looking forward to it - will pay extra attention to all things yellow, legs in fireplaces and anything else that you suggest. Probably cover my eyes at the drilla moment again though!

I think I lost my previous post - there are lots of strong women in this series: Gemma, Alice, Baptiste's wife. Also Eve I suppose.

And I still think it's stupid that Sophie was ever mistaken for Alice. They look nothing alike. Have ranted about this before but NOTHING. And even the most desperate parents in the world aren't capable of that amount of cognitive dissonance.

Like a previous poster said, I also think that the fact that Alice and Sophie don't look alike was deliberate. The writers said that they took inspiration from real life cases, and in one of them this happened:
"In another case that influenced us, a confidence trickster convinced a family in Texas he was their long-lost son, despite the fact his hair and eyes were a different colour. He even had a French, not an American, accent.
The parents were desperate to believe him and, as we have tried to show, desperation can play bizarre tricks on the mind."

Hilde was the parrot which never spoke that Jorn told Baptiste about I think. If Jorn hadn't left the links to Lena they would not have known who the third girl was (well until they asked Alice and Sophie).

What did Baptiste mean when he said "Sometimes Hilde speaks"

Jorn had said the same thing when he and Baptiste worked together and made a discovery. He told Baptiste the story of Hilde from German folklore.

ThisPasadenaHomemaker · 30/11/2016 23:08

Ellle that's exactly the case I mentioned in my post. The Imposter is about that very boy.

It's so rare and implausible that it's worthy of a documentary.

The complete lack of any similarity between Sophie and Alice was a huge deal breaker for me. As I said in a previous thread, Abigail Hardingham who plays Sophie has such incredibly unusual and distinctive features. Her large and protruding upper lip, her giant eyes. My DD is 8, if I (god forbid) didn't see her for the next 11 years I'd still know that Abigail Hardingham wasn't her if she came back claiming to be so!

Anyway, I have other issues with the show. Like I said, I invested and was emotionally affected. But it was far from brilliant.

ThisPasadenaHomemaker · 30/11/2016 23:09

Yup, Hilde was the anecdotal parrot

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 30/11/2016 23:10

I'm just amazed that after 8 complex episodes I got to the end still following the plot (unlike Marcella)

I loved it. My take

  1. Brig wasn't faking
  2. Sophie's dad was good

I can't remember but did Daniel die ? If so he died thinking his father was bad, and he wasn't.

Oh and 3 Eve was taking her father to question him , not home to care for him.

LillianGish · 30/11/2016 23:15

Or did Brig hush it up? I think it's fair to say that much of what took place happened because of the Brig hushing things up - Reed's suicide not being questioned, the DNA swap, Julien being ignored - in fact right back to his hushing up the original Iraq incident. Funnily enough the first thing my DD said last week during the Iraq scene was. "They should have just left him then none of this would have happened". What wasn't really explained for me was why, having abducted Sophie, he went on to abduct the other girls. They were all the same age so it wasn't as if he was going for a younger model.

Tableforjuan · 30/11/2016 23:17

Do did Alice really have a baby who died or did Sophie make that up when she was masquerading as Alice?

MiddleClassProblem · 30/11/2016 23:17

Well... now what do I watch?

^^

With Julien spotting the picture of the mysterious hut on the wall, he decided to call an old friend for a favour.
He rang his "friend at Interpol" to ask whether he could help track down Gettrick in Switzerland.
The name of the old friend? Mark Walsh. The same Mark Walsh who featured in series one.

The detective was the British liaison officer during the investigation into the disappearance of Oliver Hughes. He eventually falls in love with Emily – Oliver's mother. The last we see of Mark is him marrying Emily, and Emily's ex-husband Tony Hughes looking awkward at the ceremony.

avamiah · 30/11/2016 23:22

hesterton,
I think you are 100 percent correct.
Sophie was under his control more than Alice because she had a child with him whom she left behind when he let her go to get medical treatment.
Instead of telling the police everything and saving everybody she decided not to.

LillianGish · 30/11/2016 23:23

I think the Brig did have dementia. That was what removed him from his post and so the cover up stopped. If he could have stayed in post he could have carried on covering. The conversation he had with Eve was because he knew he wouldn't be able to defend himself when the truth came out. And he knew the truth was as likely to come out once he was no longer in control of the investigation.

MillieMoodle · 30/11/2016 23:24

The bit about Hilde came from when Jorn and Baptiste were watching CCTV trying to find out where Sophie went between leaving the house and apparently burning in the shed. Jorn said "it's like waiting for Hilde to speak". When Baptiste asked what he meant, he explained that as a child, he had a parrot named Hilde. Every day he would wait for it to speak and it never did. So in his family it was referred to as waiting for Hilde to speak, i.e. waiting for something to happen but it never does.

Littlepig8834 · 30/11/2016 23:24

Thank you! I was trying to think of someone called Hilde in the series.

Makes sense to me now!

Lurleene · 30/11/2016 23:25

Just wanted to say ( on the off chance she looks on here!) that Keeley Hawes has been in three of my favourite things to watch this year - Line of Duty, The Durrells and The Missing. All the characters have been so very different, but she has been utterly fab in all of them. I luffs her, she is a wonderful actress.

Just remembered - she was in The Hollow Crown this year too, which backs my point up even more. Smile

schmack · 30/11/2016 23:27

I'm also not buying them believing Sophie could be Alice. I know there was the case in the US but there must have been extenuating circumstances. My son is 11 and I could pick him out today from a distance, at dusk, on a dark pitch, in the fog, amongst 4 other teams of boys when I arrived at a massive spirts pitch with no idea which game he was in or even if he was playing. If I didn't see him again until he was in his early twenties I'm convinced I would still k ow him, or if someone was not him. If he disappeared as a baby , ok, maybe, bit even at 11, his characteristics are formed and I know them. His gait, his lope, his weird shaped feet, his double crown, his distinctive mole. I don't see how you could replicate or fake that.

MorrisZapp · 30/11/2016 23:27

Well I'm a hard faced old hag but that had me utterly rapt and in tears. All the awards must go to this amazing series.

Also brig would have been scared for his life and Eve's which added to him covering up. Sorry if someone already said, so many posts!
