As part 3 is full.

I'm having a day off due to illness, so am planning a re-watch from the beginning as have got used to the time switches that confused me at first. Quite looking forward to it - will pay extra attention to all things yellow, legs in fireplaces and anything else that you suggest. Probably cover my eyes at the drilla moment again though!

Well, I cried.

BUT I felt it was a ludicrously expository episode. All the uncertainty, nuance and what ifs of the last 8 weeks speedily tied up in a bumper episode of resolution with minimal plot to tie it together.

Love Baptiste, think Keeley Hawes was incredible but it was just very underwhelming for a finale.

And I still think it's stupid that Sophie was ever mistaken for Alice. They look nothing alike. Have ranted about this before but NOTHING. And even the most desperate parents in the world aren't capable of that amount of cognitive dissonance.

(Apart from the ones in The Imposter).

Nowombattheinn · 30/11/2016 22:38

I think Gettrick had brain washed Sophie about her Dad and she was all fucked up about, as she said to Baptiste "they're my family" (Gettrick & Lucy) and she was nothing without them.

If forensics had investigated Reed death it would have shown as no suicide surely? But then maybe never questioned or investigated if no reason of suspicion of a murder? Or did Brig hush it up?

AnnieNoMouse · 30/11/2016 22:39

Avarniah some of us think Sophie's dad was culpable in some way because when Julien went to see him in 2016 the dad said he had lost his good job for a menial one - that suggested things had come out about him after Sophie's abduction. Plus a very early thread had theories about Sophie looking pregnant shortly before the abduction.

This was an excellent second series, nothing like first series which had a horrible ending. Sam died but he was one of the least likeable characters, so I'm glad it was him.

I was pretty convinced prior to the finale that Lucy was Alice's and not Sophie's. I'm quiet surprised that Lucy didn't know Alice's name (she said in the car to Driller 'will that girl be ok?'). We also don't see Sophie in the scene where Alice and Sophie are in the basement. Does that mean Lucy was kept upstairs?

BeyondTheHarpy · 30/11/2016 22:40

He probably told her she wouldn't be allowed to keep Lucy if she went back too. I interpretted her as meaning Lucy and Alice were her family, and she wouldn't be allowed to see them if she went home.

CremeEggThief · 30/11/2016 22:41

In a way, I think it will be easier for the family to heal and move on and perhaps include Eve and her daughter, without Sam. He died knowing his daughter was alive and free; sort of sacrificing himself to save her, which redeems his character.

PenguinsandPebbles · 30/11/2016 22:41

That drilling scene, goodness me.

Also agree Sophie's dad wasn't bad!

Seems to me that Sophie was his favourite and likely the most vulnerable, perhaps the first, assuming he didn't have any other victims prior to her and the only one we know of that had a child. His child, and likely next victim. He had turned Sophie throughly against the outside world, the others were stronger, that's why Leena sadly died, Alice played along with conformity he comments "Alice knew when to shut up".

Justwhy · 30/11/2016 22:41

There is no way the Brig was faking it. He knew he was getting dementia and wanted to tell Eve to remember the good things about him before the shit hit the fan and he couldn't explain for himself.

The whole series was showing the cruelty of the disease and how it reduces grown men to children. Wetting himself etc

The final scene between the two was showing how dementia has a moment of clarity and then back to darkness. Asking whether he was going back to the home with the pause was Eve making the decision between dumping him back in the home because of what he did, or remembering he good father he was and taking him home to care for. She chose the latter.

PenguinsandPebbles · 30/11/2016 22:42

Ive not seen the first series.... please no spoilers Grin

liquidrevolution · 30/11/2016 22:44

Completely off topic but the girl playing Lucy looks very much like one of the kids from a Xmas tv advert. Cannot for the life of me remember what the advert is for though Morrisons I think? She was very good.

A satisfying ending. Have added series 1 to my christmas list even though the ending isnt as good. Smile

JungleWait · 30/11/2016 22:45

I also don't believe Brig was faking the whole thing. Why would be do that to himself when he feels no guilt at all about the cover up?

One thing we don't know and I can't get my head around is how they were all allowed to the theme park and why one of the girls didn't leave a clue or say anything to anyone??

JungleWait · 30/11/2016 22:46

Liquid, the ending for series one is awful. It also feels a lot scarier because it's a much younger child.

NoelHeadbands · 30/11/2016 22:48

Classmate
Noel, Drilla said that Lena was dead at that point - he already knew he needed an out, so set up the recording for the bribary purposely then

Yes I totally get why he did record the conversation, but I'm talking about the way the line was delivered. It was clunky, too explanatory

MoonfaceAndSilky · 30/11/2016 22:48

I'm quiet surprised that Lucy didn't know Alice's name (she said in the car to Driller 'will that girl be ok?'

I thought she said "will she be ok?" ?

How did Baptiste know from just looking at the photo that the cottage was in Switzerland?

Was Stone also involved with young girls? He said something about "the girls we had in Iraq."

Gettrick had poisoned Sophie against her father - we saw him say "Alice's family want her back," as if to say "Your dad doesn't want you though."

Well some welling up here too. Just felt so utterly sad for all the girls who have had to go through such horrendous experiences. Really made me reflect. Loved baptiste. However, very clunky and some convenient quick tying up. I said this in this the last thread, but I just don't believe the Iraq incident would be enough for drilla to blackmail the others. It happened decades ago and I'm disappointed with this tie in. Overall though a very enjoyable series. Baptiste was amazing. He better live.

Clawdy · 30/11/2016 22:55

Don't think Stone was necessarily involved with very young girls, but obviously the group treated women disgracefully.

DodoRevival · 30/11/2016 22:55

How did Baptiste know from just looking at the photo that the cottage was in Switzerland?

'Switzerland' was printed on the picture (conveniently).

What did Baptiste mean when he said "Sometimes Hilde speaks"

Probably not relevant to the story, which I thought was excellent. I enjoyed this series more than the last.

Brig was really bad, he had so many opportunities to do the right thing but chose to save himself even when he was diagnosed with dementia. He really was a nasty piece of work, almost as bad as Drilla really and dementia or no should go to prison.
