For those who loved it last time, will you watch after the let down of the ending? (Well I felt it was a let down, don't think there was a proper conclusion at all and still room for doubts as to whether he was still alive or not).

I loved it though and will definitely be watching the next series. I've seen the trailer and it looks very very good. Julian (think that was his name) is still in it. Looks like it is based on JayCee Dugard/Elizabeth Fritz type cases where they have gone missing as children and reappeared years later.

Cannot wait!

"JB and the army: are they going to close ranks on him?"

I wondered if that's why Eve(?) Stone wouldn't speak to him & that she was thinking that someone from the base was involved.

Is her Dad ill? & do we think that he has died?

LarkDescending · 14/10/2016 14:10

Re 1, I agree - lots of questions:

Where was Alice going - and why did she leave the Army base at all? Surely both school and home would have been on the base, and that long road suggested the town was not sufficiently close to be easily skived off to.
Arranged pickup or chance encounter?
Why was she lying on the floor of the VW - was she unconscious? The filming suggested she could see the treetops through the glass roof.

I tried but failed to get the detail of the VW's number plate. Was it German?

I also haven't quite understood the geography. In 2014 she walked, whilst very ill with appendicitis, what appeared to be a long way through woodland and across a dam, eventually collapsing in Eckhausen town square in the middle of the Christmas market. Did she bypass (avoid) the Army base in doing this? It isn't clear to me whether she wanted to get back to her parents at all. We did not see her asking for them.

MiddleClassProblem · 14/10/2016 14:16

It's interesting looking at IMDb to see the amounts of eps people are in by they could update it during/after the series as its not hard to do and have know production companies to do this.

Scarydinosaurs · 14/10/2016 14:20

That is a good point, Lark. Where was she going when she walked out of school? Her brother said "you keep bunking off" had she met up with her abductor several times and this time he kept her?

I suggest that this will be an 'online boyfriend' gone wrong.

The Aldi woman seems to be a chance encounter. The 'grow some balls' seems to imply that his anger and rage was out of character for him. His parents clearly have no idea he is on crack- does he turn to drugs as a way of coping with having to keep a secret?

Do we agree that Alice's dad is the father of the pregnant army woman's baby? Massive conflict of interest there, surely? (I'm a bit worried I've misunderstood this as no one else seems to be talking about it).

Scarydinosaurs · 14/10/2016 14:22

I think Returned Alice is a different girl altogether- not Sophie and not Alice. Maybe the abductor's own daughter? Copied Alice's tattoo and tries to steal her family? Maybe Returned Alice helped kill real Alice?

diddl · 14/10/2016 14:27

"Do we agree that Alice's dad is the father of the pregnant army woman's baby?"

Not sure on that one.

She's pregnant in 2014-is there any indication that there's anything between them then?

Also, I wondered if it was a case of two people lost after tragedy, er, coming together?

shabbs · 14/10/2016 14:29

Watched 'The Missing' for the first time ever this week. Loved it but even after re-watching I got a bit lost in it lol - Hmm

'The finger tapping thing?' - my 8 year old grandson has been taught to do that at school. His teacher says that when the children are worried, scared, nervous or sad they should, tap the end of each finger against their thumb while saying a sentance ....so 1st finger you say the word 'I', second finger you say 'am', third finger you say 'Awe' and little finger you say 'some'. According to my GS 'its brilliant....gives you a bit of time to be quiet and tell yourself that you are awesome....really works Gran.

Dont think thats necessarily what she is doing it just made me think of GS

Scarydinosaurs · 14/10/2016 14:37

did the only reason I thought he might be is because she has the scan photo up on her fridge, and has left it there, then nearly chucked it after his "I can't come round here anymore". So not very concrete!

How is the young man scrubbing blood from the floor linked to everything? Why does JB think he knows where the girls are? Does he suspect his father was the kidnapper?

diddl · 14/10/2016 14:50

"How is the young man scrubbing blood from the floor linked to everything? Why does JB think he knows where the girls are? Does he suspect his father was the kidnapper?"

It was his father's funeral where we first saw the woman that Matthew then screamed at in the supermarket carpark.

Did the photofit look anything like his dad?

No idea why JB thinks there's a connection.

Scarydinosaurs · 14/10/2016 14:55

Oh did you think the funeral woman and Aldi woman were definitely the same person? I saw the comments and photos upthread but wasn't sure!

Photofit didn't match his dad's photo...seems to be a theme of father-child relationships. The dead father and son, the pregnant soldier and her father...

diddl · 14/10/2016 14:59

Yes, both Lia Williams.

Scarydinosaurs · 14/10/2016 15:09

Ohhhh interesting! Thank you.

we need more information. Is it Wednesday yet?

LarkDescending · 14/10/2016 15:21

Or, do we know where Sophie was taken from? Possibly theme park?

The Radio Times recap contains a screenshot of the relevant newspaper clipping, which shows (2nd column) that she disappeared while returning home from school.

LarkDescending · 14/10/2016 15:23

...and (1st column) that Sophie disappeared in the Paris area.

diddl · 14/10/2016 15:47

How old was Sophie when she was taken & how long before Alice, do we know?

LarkDescending · 14/10/2016 15:52

Sophie was aged 11, according to that newspaper clipping.

When we see the first phone call to Baptiste about Alice's case, there is reference to his investigation into Sophie's disappearance having been "11 or 12 years ago" - so only shortly before Alice went missing.

LillianGish · 14/10/2016 15:59

What do we think Alice's brother was talking about when he he told her gravestone he hadn't forgotten his promise? Also, going right back to the opening scenes, how did he know his sister was sitting on the other side of the wall of the playground? Did he know where she was going when she was bunking off and who she was meeting? Photofit looked nothing like suicide man - if anything it looked more like Aldi woman (though more masculine and face was blanked out). What has happened to policewoman' baby? Did she somehow lose it when Alice died I wonder? Would she really have kept the scan on the fridge all that time - surely she would have put it somewhere more special if she no longer has baby? No idea yet of the significance of the photos - I can't recognise anyone in them. I'm loving the fact that I'm already so sucked into it that I've watched again.

MiddleClassProblem · 14/10/2016 16:10

That radio times article picked up in so much, they must have had a meet g like this to write it Grin

I reckon Alice went behind that wall a lot and he had seen her do it before.

I really need to re watch it. I thought the scan was present day as in she is pregnant again now? I only had one eye on the telly though and I seemed to have missed so much I need to try again without playing clash of clans at the same time

TheSpottedZebra · 14/10/2016 16:16

I didn't watch S1 but just watched the 1st episode of S2 and I LOVED IT. Of course, I have no idea what's going on, but that does not stop me from coming up with an early theory.

So -parenthood /surrogacy /adoption.

Alice was not their bio child, she was adopted or a surrogate. She was taken 'back', and she in turn was made to have a child, which was taken away. Gemma can't carry a child (as it's always the woman's 'fault' in these things), but David Morrissey is fathering children left right and centre.
Then Alice comes back, and quite soon starts a fire which kills her and injures her father.

And they're all annoyed at the shrink as they felt that Alice was allowed out too soon.

My theory may need quite a lot of some work. I have no idea how the Daniel&Dad thing fits in. Or the other characters actually.

But I think Alice definitely was abducted as we saw someone peeking out of the VW window, in a way that they would not if they knew her and she was expecting them.

LarkDescending · 14/10/2016 16:32

That's interesting. Was it possible to discern anything about the person peering out of the VW? I totally missed that.

I'd imagine it would have been hard for Alice to make secret plans with anybody outside the base as an 11 yr old in 2003 - before the days of smartphones, easy social networking etc.

If she was targeted, rather than randomly abducted, how would the abductor have known that the child in school uniform walking along that road was Alice? Unless they knew her really well, or knew that she would be there at that particular moment? I agree it did not look as though she was expecting anybody.

MiddleClassProblem · 14/10/2016 16:40

Could the tattoo be something her groomer/abducter asked her to do or even did for her on a bunk? Maybe Sophie would have one too then

MiddleClassProblem · 14/10/2016 16:46

We used msn in the late 90s/early 00s before social media and you would talk to both friends and randoms on it. Also chatrooms were big back then

TheSpottedZebra · 14/10/2016 16:50

Ok, so I re watched the VW bit, and I, er, was totally wrong. You saw her glance with trepidation in front of her, to where the van must have been by then. So it wasn't a pre planned meeting, or at least not a pleasant one. It really looked like -eek, something is wrong here... But the movement at the window was after she must have been inside the van.

But there was another reference to parent/child, when the story was flicking between snatched and returned Alice, it did linger for a second on the nativity scene in the town square -specifically a few figures around a managered baby. Hmmm....

AnnieNoMouse · 14/10/2016 18:17

Perhaps David Morrissey is Alice's dad but her biological mother is not his wife? Or they adopted her from a surrogate, she had an identical twin who remained with the birth mother, or went to another adopter, and it is the twin who has turned up?
Alice had the tattoo before she went missing. she'd done it herself and there'd been a big row at home.

I think I remember cases of young women/girls meeting up with what what turned out to be online abusers back then - wasn't there a SL in Corrie?
