Top Gear - has there been a thread on the comments made about SN on here?

Only I can't find one on Search, so sorry if repeating.

Jeremy Clarkson and the man with the ridicuous hair asking Richard Hammond if he "was now mental" and giving him a tissue "in case he dribbles".

And in the interview with Jamie Oliver they said somehting about him having a "special needs face".

I mean, this is the BBC ffs not some crappy channel.

god they are total fuckwits

good article by johann hari last sunday about top gear and resultant deaths and so forth from speeding

Mumatuks · 30/01/2007 10:18

When I heard those comments, I thought how it was going to upset quite alot of people.

Now I'm not condoning what Clarkson said, but I think it just him, his way, his age / era he grew up in. Quite a while ago now they were talkng about some German car and he referenced it with Germany / Hitler (or something equally as racist) and that upset the Germans and made the news.

I'm not quite sure why they let it through, you could complain to the televsison watchdog, Offcom.

oliveoil · 30/01/2007 10:18

Honestly, I couldn't believe what I was hearing/seeing.

Even dh said they were ignorant tossers and he loves TG.

I didn't hear the special needs face bit

but I thought the bit about asking him if he was mental was meant to be a way of ending speculation

I had read an interview in which Jeremy Clarkson had said that the media were reluctant to say that Hammond was now okay; not a good story

so I did think that they were trying to say the worst things possible to end doubt in the (largely loutish) audiences' minds

Fillyjonk · 30/01/2007 10:23

omg he is racist also?

ffs the main is a total pillock who is, imo, partly responsiblr for the deaths of quite a lots of kids in speeding incidents

fuckwit

belgo · 30/01/2007 10:23

I thought I'd wrong when they said that. I hoped I'd heard wrong.

Comments like that from Jeremy Clarkson will be Top Gear's downfall. But he's too arrogant to realise that.

Cappuccino · 30/01/2007 10:24

I actually don't think they will, belgo

Clarkson is an intelligent man who knows his audience

Jimjams2 · 30/01/2007 10:24

I watched Top Gear and um didn't notice them say it.

belgo · 30/01/2007 10:25

Cappuncino - Well, it puts me off from watching it. Jeremy Clarkson being intelligent doesn't stop him being arrogant.

ArcticRoll · 30/01/2007 10:26

That is outrageous-Jeremy Clarkson is a total prick -can't believe he is so successful.

Cappuccino · 30/01/2007 10:27

like I said, I didn't hear the bit with Jeremy Clarkson

but I honestly thought that he was taking the piss out of the media's speculation/ reaction to Hammond now, rather than introducing his own views

personally I was more offended by the 'doesn't Richard Hammond look tired' thread on mumsnet, because actually I didn't think he did and I did feel that some people were dragging out an incident which he feels is behind him

and I think that Clarkson's comments were meant to end that in a language which, while not the one I would choose, would be understood by his core audience

Cappuccino · 30/01/2007 10:28

I meant 'didn't hear the bit with Jamie Oliver'

sorry

belgo · 30/01/2007 10:28

the 'doesn't Richard Hammond look tired' thread on mumsnet was started by me, and I fail to see what was offensive about it.

Fillyjonk · 30/01/2007 10:29

other arrogant bigots include...

enoch powell...

shall i continue?

so there is (rightly) a furore over big brother but somehow top gear is ok?

wurlywurly · 30/01/2007 10:30

i didnt hear those comment must have been yawning too loud.

Wordsmith · 30/01/2007 10:30

Clarkson and the like are pillocks, but so are most petrolheads. I don't normally watch the prog but did at the weekend - it was eiher that or celeb big brother and that's even worse. Must admit I enjoyed it even though I winced at his comments. I think it proved that they were little boys playing with big toys - something they would no doubt admit - and ther are lots of people who like that sort of thing!

And I must admit, offensive as it was, it was a load more intelligent than CBB!

oliveoil · 30/01/2007 10:31

I think he did look tired but I think I would if my head had been embedded in the earth.

I am glad they decided not to mention the crash again.

But I still think they are all tossers who need to grow up.

And their jeans ffs, how high are they going to pull them up????????????????????

OP posts:
Cappuccino · 30/01/2007 10:31

sorry belgo but I thought it was patronising

as if people were waiting ghoulishly to look ill rather than hoping he would be better

I didn't think he looked tired. I think he looked just the way he looked before. He didn't look particularly ruddy cheeked but then none of them do, filming in a massive grey hangar

belgo · 30/01/2007 10:31

wurly wurly - was it past your bedtime

Enid · 30/01/2007 10:32

god why do you watch these programmes

was SO excited when I thought it might get banned

belgo · 30/01/2007 10:33

I didn't mean it in anyway patronising. I meant it purely as an observation that, incidentally, my dh observed. (he never usually notices when I'm tired..)

foxinsocks · 30/01/2007 10:33

his face did look different

but that's what you'd expect after a major crash I guess

can't see who it was patronising that thread

piglit · 30/01/2007 10:35

I must admit I cringed when I heard the comments about Hammond dribbling and being mental.

At what age should men stop wearing jeans? Surely there must come a time when you have to hang up the jeans and put on the jumbo cords?

belgo · 30/01/2007 10:36

I'm prepared to accept that some people may think my thread was slightly patronising (if observing that someone looks tired is patronising), but I'm really not happy about it being called offensive.

kandi · 30/01/2007 10:37

I heard it and thought it was disgusting. I can't stand Jeremy Clarkson. He said something along the lines of Jamie having 'special needs' (in connection with his driving, I assumed) and he replied 'I spent my school years in special needs'. Not funny at all, and v. stupid imo.
