Top Gear - has there been a thread on the comments made about SN on here?

Only I can't find one on Search, so sorry if repeating.

Jeremy Clarkson and the man with the ridicuous hair asking Richard Hammond if he "was now mental" and giving him a tissue "in case he dribbles".

And in the interview with Jamie Oliver they said somehting about him having a "special needs face".

I mean, this is the BBC ffs not some crappy channel.

oh in that case its even worse IMO

If he's doing it to make some sort of laddish political point-and I'm paying for it-oh ffs.

I actually know families who have been devasted by the death of a child to a speeding driver. I have seen how that utterly rips apart a family, I have been to services with unecessarily tiny coffins and it is so completely senseless and unecessary. And these twunks think its funny . coming out with their anti speed camera crap

(oooh this touches a nerve. anyway...)

btw shrivelled one...you win the prize!

You are the First Poster to say "political correctness gone mad"

here is your prize

Spidermama · 30/01/2007 20:39

He also made a remark recently about a car being 'a bit gay'.
He's a prize toss pot and I can't for the life of me understand why he has a show on the BBC and more worrying why millions of people tune into it.

Jeremy Clarkson is a bad man.

Fillyjonk · 30/01/2007 20:39

(sorry, pruni, that bile wa to JC not you!

enjoy your prize

CaptainCaveman · 30/01/2007 20:51

If peopele find the comments so offensive, why are you watching it when you know Clarkson et al are likely to annoy you?

It is nigh on impossible to air a tv programme without offending someone. I expect the old 'test card' screen would be deemed offensive nowadays!

It's not as if Top Gear have never said anything untoward before?

Does anyone recall when JC drove an Audi from London to Scotland and back on one tank of fuel? As he left the petrol station he commented that you shouldn't carry any unnecessary weight in the car - and dumped a body rolled in a carpet out of his boot. Perhaps advocating murder? Or littering? ffs!

DumbledoresGirl · 30/01/2007 21:37

CapnCaveman, did he really? pmsl!

Spidermama · 30/01/2007 21:39

What a wag. My sides a splitting.

DumbledoresGirl · 30/01/2007 21:41

Oh come on Spidermama, ther must be something on tv you like that we all think is a waste of out tv licence money?

Spidermama · 30/01/2007 21:43

I'm sure there is DG. Not that I watch much telly these days but I'm sure you'd be only happy to let me know how risible you found my TV choices.

I don't hate many people, but Jeremy Clarkson is a very bad man. I am deeply disturbed by the sheer number of apparently normal people who find him amusing.

Jimjams2 · 30/01/2007 21:43

I don't know I do find JC quite funny- and he says things that I would say to my close friends. In fact I have a very close friend who looks like him and sounds like him (although aged 37 can't drive )

I saw the episode and didn't notice any offensive comments and yet I have a brain damaged son, so I'm not sure what to make of it all tbh. I think I don't find things like this offensive as they are comments directed towards people who can take it. They're not comments made at anyone's expense.

If a comment was made that was at the expense of a disabled person then I would be livid etc etc, and probably quite upset, but somehow this seems different.

The comments were at the expense of JO (who has caused me no end of grief ) and Richard Hammond but in a usual way. Thought it was all quite moving in some ways.

quadrophenia · 30/01/2007 21:44

I love TopGear like I said but saying jamie oliver was pulling a special needs face was out of order and simply saying well you know what he is like doesn't justify it IMO. What amazes me about such a distasteful comment is that the show isn't live and the comment could have been edited out yet it wasn't.

quadrophenia · 30/01/2007 21:48

I see his comment much in the same way that i would have done if he had said the words which were much debated on MN regarding joey Deacon. Saying someone has a special needs face is surely much the same sort of thing, or am i completely wrong here?

DumbledoresGirl · 30/01/2007 21:48

The comment towards JO was a bit below the belt but then he came right back with a response so I think he defended himself well. You are right, it is not live, JO could have objected and asked for that to be removed - presumably he didn't. Doesn't that suggest that he was OK with the remark?

As for the comments towards RH, it is perfectly plain to kind, sensitive, female me that JC and JM are deeply fond of RH and they were simply speaking as men to speak to other men they are fond of but don't want to say as much out loud. Not all men are touchy-feely (and not all women find touchy-feely men attractive, but that is beside the point ).

Spidermama · 30/01/2007 21:49

I find it interesting that most people seem to think it's fine for Jeremy Clarkson to be an intolerant offensive biggot but when it's Jade Goody making biggotted remarks it turns into the Salem witch hunt.

DumbledoresGirl · 30/01/2007 21:51

Spidermama, perhaps the difference is that JC understands the full implications of his comments and JG doesn't?

But hey, I don't know about that as I would switch JG off quicker than I could spit and I haven't watched one second of the recent furore surrounding her.

Jimjams2 · 30/01/2007 21:52

Oh god the Joey Deacon thing I found offensive, this not at all, nt sure why. I think to me this was all banter. I suppose I have a lot of male friends and this is how we tend to talk to each other. I gues its a fine line and an example of how what offends one person doesn't another. Agree DG- that;s what I found moving, they were obviously all quite emotional watching the crash etc.

quadrophenia · 30/01/2007 21:52

Its not about whether JO was okay with the remarks though is it, its an offence thing to say just because JO laughed it off doesn't make it excuseable. Much in the same way that Shilpa forgiving jade doesn't make her behaviour ok.

Spidermama · 30/01/2007 21:53

So he's willfully bigotted and she's just a fuckwit. Doesn't that make him worse?

Jimjams2 · 30/01/2007 21:53

the Jade thing was completely different. She was using racism in a nasty way to be horrible, JC was bantering.

oliveoil · 30/01/2007 21:53

Exactly

If Jade Goody had said someone had a SN face, this site would be in uproar.

But because Jeremy Clarkeson, well he is like that isn't he, only joking blah blah blah.

quadrophenia · 30/01/2007 21:54

I agree btw the crash footage and thier reactions was very emotional and as i said I do love the show.

satine · 30/01/2007 21:54

I'm afraid I think you're living in cloud cuckoo land if you think that you will ever stop people dealing with sensitive situations with humour. Sure, I can see that asking someone if they are "a mental" might not be everyone's way of approaching the subject of brain injury but they're blokes, playing up to a blokey audience and the comment made me laugh. I don't think for a second that the prospect of Richard Hammond actually suffering long term mental impairment is some hilarious jape but the fact that he is ok means that it's ok to joke.
I've served in the army and worked with the police - all male dominated arenas and I can tell you this is how men relate to each other and how they deal with difficult and stressful subjects. They are not going to give each other hugs and tell their friends that they feel their pain and are there for them. Unless you work in fashion.

(That last bit is a joke.)

DumbledoresGirl · 30/01/2007 21:54

It was below the belt Quadrophenia, I agree with you. I have to admit, it didnd't offend me though, but I recognise that is not the point.

Jimjams2 · 30/01/2007 21:54

Oh I don't know. I missed it when it was said, but reading it back I don't find it offensive and yet have a child with SN, a child with brain damage. No idea why.

Spidermama · 30/01/2007 21:55

The thing is I didn't see the programme and I've hated Clarkson for years. So really I'm not basing my opinions on what he said the other night. That's the least of his problems if you ask me.

I must shoot off to another thread. I can't quite understand why I waste so much time disliking someone I never watch.
