What a way to start.

They also tainted their own country mans win.

I agree with this, but the French athlete was the biggest jerk IMO.
He should also, and more, have risen above the crowd when he was competing.

CaveMum · 18/08/2016 12:05

Just seen a very good interview on the Team GB Facebook page with Charlotte Dujardin. She's annoyed with Carl at the moment as he chucked her in the swimming pool last week with her phone and she's lost a load of photos, including a selfie with Andy Murray!

CaveMum · 18/08/2016 12:08

More on the Paralympic grant situation here. It looks like it is part of the deal that the host country pay the travel grants so it's not as if it's an unexpected cost for the Rio Organising Committee.

dizzyfeck · 18/08/2016 12:19

Maybe they could get money from Patrick Hickey and Kevin Mallon. That might help, apparently the profits of their illegal ticket cartel for this olympics was about 2.4 million pounds! It's probably been going for years as well.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 18/08/2016 12:29

Can't wait for the triathlon today!!! Surely it'll be gold and silver for the brownlees? I'd love to see Johnny win but Alistair always seems to be that little bit better. Anyway, good luck to both of them!

Lweji · 18/08/2016 13:35

[[http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-37107450 Police in Brazil investigating illegal Olympic ticket sales have arrested the head of the European Olympic Committees, Irishman Patrick Hickey.] It doesn't look great.

I'm afraid the grant situation doesn't surprise me. Sad It is a reflection of how mant Brazilians in power handle most things money related. The Paralympics will be their weakest link. I hope the IOC ensures the grants are sent. Or at least the costs are paid directly.

dizzyfeck · 18/08/2016 13:41

It is a reflection of how mant Brazilians in power handle most things money related So sadly true, the rot goes right down to the core. I am pessimistic though, I think it is a global phenomenon and corruption often goes hand in hand with power.

Lweji · 18/08/2016 13:53

Yes, revelations in the last few years have been shocking, although corruption is (and was) rife throughout.

But, sadly there isn't much cash going around in Brazil right now but I'd be surprised fixing the pool cost that much. It feels more that the grant money is missing from somewhere else.

LotsOfDots · 18/08/2016 14:05

I have a random question. Just been watching Jonathan Edwards talking about triathlon. I am sure he used to advertise laser eye surgery, but he's wearing glasses again now. Did I imagine this?!

Modern pentathlon and triathlon today, brilliant. I love a multi sport event!

Igneococcus · 18/08/2016 14:44

Does the triathlon cycle route include that scary descent?

LotsOfDots · 18/08/2016 14:53

I hope not! I can't watch it again, it was too stressful watching the women's road race!

Mummylin · 18/08/2016 14:53

Can anyone tell me roughly how long the triathlon takes, I want to watch it but need to have a bath as I'm going out at 5.30

dizzyfeck · 18/08/2016 15:24

Lweji I don't think it was spent on the diving pool as it is a common algae and really easy to get rid of. Apparently the federal court has blocked the Government from paying the grant until the Olympic taxes and accounts are opened up for scrutiny. I wonder if we will be seeing the old federal japonês on the scene soon!

Mirandawest · 18/08/2016 15:25

I think it finishes some time before 5, but not sure how long the cycling and running take. Maybe have bath sooner rather than later so you can definitely see the end?

Igneococcus · 18/08/2016 15:29

"The descent on this bike course is fairly brutal." says the BBC Triathlon expert but I don't know if that means it's the one from the roadrace.

Did they not only empty and refill the pool? I don't know how much that would cost.

cathyandclare · 18/08/2016 15:58

Oh just seen that the lovely badminton boys won bronze. Great news. Very much enjoying watching the Brownlees, watched them live in Leeds and they were incredibly impressive.

Mummylin · 18/08/2016 16:06

Thanks Mirandawest have done just that so should see the end.

Mirandawest · 18/08/2016 16:15

One of the Brownlee brothers holds the course record for my local park run course of a bit over 14 minutes. At my "peak" I have managed to do it in about 28 minutes Grin

cathyandclare · 18/08/2016 16:22

I'm impressed with 28 minutes Miranda but I'm slogging my way through couch25k!

CaveMum · 18/08/2016 16:26

Brownlee dominance! If not they could both take Gold! Just hope the South African guy doesn't cause problems.

Mirandawest · 18/08/2016 16:27

That was at my "peak" Grin Am back on couch to 5k for about the 8th time and on week 3 at the moment. Can't imagine running for that far or long at the moment...

Mirandawest · 18/08/2016 16:28

Assuming they are both in this position at the end I wonder who would get it (I do of course realise these are always dangerous words to say)

cathyandclare · 18/08/2016 16:30

I've been inspired watching this and have registered for park run!!

Igneococcus · 18/08/2016 16:30

I wish I was at home watching and not just updating the BBC page.
