Welcome to Thread 134 of rampant Muskeperving over plot appreciation of BBCMusketeers and their FAF actors.

We're in recovery from Episode six Sex still, so help yourselves to a drink from the bar, apart from the pre-poured whiskies. They're for VIPs. Obvs - if you're a VIP, help yourself Grin

Yeah
He must be a fucking cyborg to survive so many stabbings/bullets

JacobFryesTopHatLackey · 24/07/2016 18:19

I agree Carolina. The grimaud fixation is odd.
The Sylvie character just feels too much like "look how right on we are - a black woman with socialist ideals. But we won't write her all that well and shoehorn her in awkwardly with a half baked romance with Athos. But at least she's in there, somewhere" Angry

ObiWanCannelloni · 24/07/2016 18:30

Hi, I'm normally on t'other threads esp politics but wanted to vent about that episode as saw your comments..

Not enjoying this series now at all.... Where's the friendship between the guys gone? Does my Porthos get any story at all this year other than the midwifery?! Please tell me there's more to come in Milady story than getting strangled by her psycho ex....

Sylvie's an awful character. Terrible casting - Did the middle aged male writers thought a butch 21 yr old was just what Athos needed Hmm terrible terrible costume and please someone put some concealer on that acne. With all the gorgeous 30-something WOC actresses out there who can't get a break it just feels like they shoved first actress they found (or who knew someone in production) into role. maybe it would have disguised the poor writing if it was a great actress. But such a drip of a character hanging round garrison waiting for Athos to decide if/when he wants her.
A couple of sword fights is not enough to make a female character interesting....Just the basic premise of the leader of revolution being at the garrison all the time and shagging the leader of kings bodyguards would be pretty unrealistic if Athos actually had any character this year.

As WOC myself, I particularly loved series 1 for its Porthos storyline and treatment of POC in 17c Paris rather than just pretending the audience is colour blind. I've bitten my tongue all series that no ones mentioned Sylvie is WOC and Athos in a interracial relationship like that was normal for a nobleman in 17c France. Some shows u can ignore colour, sure, but S1-2 always dealt with it. Yet last night the writers thought flogging scene was ok. Stealing bread - you get hanged for that but treason, oh that's flogging offence Hmm I thought it was very cynical writing based on colour of the character

For some of my friends who are WoC this series have been pissed as
a) the writers had Sylvie really free and easy which was weird when you have Constance worrying about babies
b) Athos in an out of character way using this young penniless woman with no family for sex / "wine and chill" when's he's always been respectful of women before... The awful unsexy shag on the dirty floor in the squat etc.
All playing to shitty stereotypes of WOC being "bit of a goer" or being used... There is lot of talk offline but people not wanting to make fuss about it but it makes me Angry

ApricotCrush twitters awash with folks brown-nosing the crew, there's lots of comments on blogs/forums/LJetc about the plot holes and the crap costumes from same people who are telling crew it's absolutely fabulous darling Grin

It doesn't help that some accounts on tumblr and Twitter are saying, everyone must support Sylvie because she's a WOC. To that I humbly say fuck off. we're in a bad place in 2016 if colour of skin (black/white/polka dotted) affects how you can talk about character or performance of an actor.

AriadneNoir · 24/07/2016 18:31

I think the Grimaud fixation is as Athos realises he's taken his eye of the ball and it's like Grimaud is Athos dark side. His shadow side - so he has to hunt him down. Also his pride is hurt.

But here is some pretty to keep us going....

I think that is a perfect summary. It was awkward and the BDSM felt forced.

AriadneNoir · 24/07/2016 18:35

Cross post with above... Not meaning to undermine serious and interesting points. X

JacobFryesTopHatLackey · 24/07/2016 18:45

obiwan you're very much welcome to the tav. And I'd like to applaud your post. It sums up pretty much everything I feel about Sylvie very articulately. I'm a WOC too and really feel like I should be liking Sylvie.

Lovely pretty there Ariadne

Carolina15 · 24/07/2016 18:48

ObiWan I have just seen your post. It wasn't up when I posted. Oh you have summed so much up perfectly there. I have seen a lot of the tumblr comments and many of the conversations. Those who were insisting people shouldn't hate Sylvie based on colour simply drove a lot of interesting conversations underground with people blocking other people to avoid being accused of racism. It got very messy over there.

AriadneNoir · 24/07/2016 19:08

Not seen much on Tumblr lately.... Sounds like that's no bad thing. Shock

And yes obi I think you've hit on a key point. Series 1 & 2 did not gloss over colour or ethnicity - or religion - given some of cardinals story lines. This series is less bold.

And welcome to the Tav..... I've found Rebellious women are welcome. Wink

Badders123 · 24/07/2016 19:09

Obiwan
Welcome
And
FUCK YEAH
Everything you said.
This character has irrationally angered me since I found out
You very eloquently sum up how i - and many others - feel about s3

JacobFryesTopHatLackey · 24/07/2016 19:17

I thought Porthos' backstory and parentage was handled well and appropriately in S1 and 2.

SisterHelenoftheEternalCatchUp · 24/07/2016 19:20

Pours drink for ObiWan, awards Star for longest 1st post ever (unless oyu've posted before? I lose track...) and waves red card for excessive plot discussions Wink Grin

For what it's worth, I don't think the writing is any worse this season that it's been in previous seasons. I like that they've given Athos something/one other than Milady to be fixated on, and have moved his character on. I completely agree that Porthos does seem to be very shortchanged in this season so far in terms of storyline and anything much at all really (maybe the last three episodes will have him in the starring role Hmm or not.) Some of the costumes are distinctly whacky (Constance, I'm looking at you) but I'm not overly bothered by that. I don't have a problem with Sylvie on a character or actress level, but Maime as Milady can act anyone off the screen without saying a word, so any other love interest for Athos was always going to come up short there.

meh. It's a TV program. It's fun. They use plot devices. I'm not going to get overly wound up about it. It's never going to please everyone. And need to have some tea.

Lovely decorations ariadne Grin

Laters...

Well Helen if you're going to be all reasonable and everything...

AriadneNoir · 24/07/2016 19:28

Maime as Milady can act anyone off the screen without saying a word....

Yes that. ♥️

ObiWanCannelloni · 24/07/2016 19:36

SisterHelen Red card for excessive plot discussion? Confused
Part of my point was, it's not really fun as you say - It hasn't been all series except for a couple of scenes... And although it's a TV programme, depiction of women and POC on mainstream BBC drama dos have repercussions beyond being a programme.
I'm sorry you didn't rate the writing in s1 & 2, I really enjoyed most of the episodes and thought there was lots of originality.

I agree with earlier post Carolina15? I wish they'd either written better love interest for Athos or simply, have his story about being a great captain and finding some peace with perhaps meaningless hot sex with gorgeous women as a side plot

I think shoving them all towards "happy ending" narrowly defined as being partnered up is pretty rubbish and takes screen time away from bromance and brotherhood.

WickedWenchOfTheNorth · 24/07/2016 19:42

We don't usually discuss plot here Obi, we usually just perve over hot men in leather, that's why you got a red card Smile

ObiWanCannelloni · 24/07/2016 19:47

WickedWenchOfTheNorth Great name Grin Grin
Why don't you discuss plot, out of interest? Does it need a seperate thread, I was wondering whether to start one to discuss the flogging scene, treatment of POC in series etc, but saw this was active?

WickedWenchOfTheNorth · 24/07/2016 19:49

Thanks Obi Smile

It's a joke we have, that we perve over HBF's and absolutely not discuss any plot Grin But of course you can discuss it if you want to Smile

Badders123 · 24/07/2016 20:06

Obi I agree with everything you've said tbh
It has annoyed me and I'm not a WOC
Of course Helen is right - it's just a tv programme - but it was such fun before!
A really funny clever show
And now?....
Not so much
Shame

WickedWenchOfTheNorth · 24/07/2016 20:12

I still like it and Athos is hot as hell so I'm happy Smile Just think Milady is a better match for Athos than Sylvie.

AriadneNoir · 24/07/2016 20:26

Athos is still hot as hell.... And Milady is a very welcome return. and she is hot as hell too

Still two episodes to go... I will save my final opinion of the series until ended. To date 6/10.... Most of that belonging to Ryan Gage who has been bloody fantastic. ♥️

Badders123 · 24/07/2016 20:32

4/10
And that's only because of
Athos fafness
RE as feron
RG as Kingy
I'm so meh about this series I'm pretty sure I've missed one ep!!

ApricotCrush · 24/07/2016 20:45

Obi the fact that they haven't addressed the fact that Sylvie is a WOC never occurred to me. I see it obviously, but it makes no difference one way or the other, she's just another actress.

I think the essence of Athos has been lost this season. He has shown weakness and lack of commitment to duty where he never did before. I think he was a stronger leader in the previous seasons.

I also don't like the way modern day problems and values have been written into a 17th century show. The slave issue in series 1 was fine because it was pertinent to that time.

And another thing while I'm discussing plot. Shock Why do they always dab at wounds with a filthy cloth in historical dramas? What she needs for those lash wounds is a bowl of salt water chucking over her. Salt is very soothing and would be the best antiseptic they would have had in those days.

But as Helen says, it's a TV show and we enjoy it whatever they throw at us. Grin

2rebecca · 24/07/2016 20:57

I found it odd that Sylvie's colour wasn't discussed in the first episode she was in when her father was obviously a different colour and I agree pretending it wasn't an issue in the 1600s is mad, but in Merlin they discussed Arthur not marrying Gwen because she was a servant and her colour was never mentioned.
They seem to make the black actresses in historically unlikely roles extra nice as well, maybe trying too hard to not portray them as bad girls and just making them appear wet.
