Why would Robert kill him? Because he's a reminder of his wife's infidelity? Doesn't Ned's loyalty to his sister undermine his loyalty to Robert? (And his wife - he was content to lie to her in a hurtful and humiliating way)

That's what they're saying. Aemon left the throne for the night's watch. Jon (Mini Aemon) left the Night's Watch for the throne.

Aemon would be good - he's another character who was so prominent I think there must be more significance than shown so far

I did notice something..Sansa never pledged Jon as her King. Neither did Littlefinger. Significant moment maybe?
