Anyone watching?

OP posts:
TiggyD · 30/05/2016 08:05

Was OK. Hopefully it will develop. I think they should have had at least one realistic car review. Also a shame that it's a one man show with helpers rather than a team.

When the last incarnation started it was Hammond, Clarkson, and other bloke. They dropped other bloke for the next series and brought in May. And Top Gear dog only lasted a series. Things get tweaked and adapted according to what works. Evans is good at that.

On the whole, OK.

LicoriceComfit · 30/05/2016 08:18

I really liked Matt when he was in the cars, but he was a bit awkward in the studio.

His buggy test v paparazzi was good, he can really drive.

I am not a fan of CE anyway, so no real surprises that I didn't warm to him.

The rally cross, rather than reasonably priced car, was better, though the guest choices were poor, but liked the Brownlie brothers being in it the show.

Overall - better than Clarkson and co, who had become zealous believers in their own 'personality' instead of car buffs.

Given it is still Top Gear, I was happy for some elements to be kept in. Just gone down the Chris.

Roussette · 30/05/2016 08:30

Davros you summed it up for me and I too watched the original TG with Tiff.

Matt came across well, his love of cars really shows and I thought he did pretty well out on the road.

But CE - oh god, can that man irritate me any more than he did before TG? Yes unfortunately. To me, he is not and never will be the right choice for TG. His ego is too big, he can only present if he has a cackling gang of sycophants hanging on his every word and that showed last night. I just want to shout SHUT UP at him repeatedly. And he bent over at one point and I saw his pants. No no no He's a total pratt.

It all seemed contrived whereas JC etc didn't - they were effortless in putting themselves across as three mates who hang out together pratting about in cars. There was no "effortless" last night - everyone trying too hard. I honestly think they could drop CE, wheel in Sabine with Matt and no one would care (and it would save £££££'s from our licence fee).

I used to giggle uncontrollably throughout previous TG's (favourite clip was JC with a mazda in a dogging site, and of course the caravans). I did once, just once, raise a smile last night but it was only at the Blackpool mayor.

Matt was cool. CE came across as a hyped up annoying kid who I wanted to slap.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/05/2016 08:39

entirely agree Roussette.

oldmum22 · 30/05/2016 09:07

I was looking forward to Top Gear and having watched it on catch up ,the main thing I feel is ,it needs tweaking. Matt was fab .I like his enthusiasm , I like his way of reporting , sometimes I did feel he was about to slip into an episode of "Episodes" ,but he was enjoyable. Sabine was good , but it was a bit contrived that Mr TopGun would lose his breakfast after being driven by her ...really? Chris needs to stop trying too hard . He needs to remember he took over from Sir Terry on the breakfast show and made that his own ,there is no need to imitate JC et al, just do your own thing Chris and speak properly to me ! Happy to watch again ,as these things take time to evolve .

Davros · 30/05/2016 09:09

Absolutely Rousette (mutual appreciation society). Why should CE get the opportunity to "settle into it"? He's an expensive component and supposedly a professional, he should be cut no slack. And yes to his delivery being like a kids' programme. Mind you, CE thinks he is a 20 something with the boots, the pants and dyed red hair.

IndridCold · 30/05/2016 09:12

Agree they should have made it a completely different format, reheating the stunts and script of the previous TG just highlighted the weak spots.

The U.K. v USA competitions, which had CE cheating to win, were frankly embarrassing.

I thought they treated Jesse Eisenberg (?) badly, and when he said he didn't care what time he got I fully agreed with him!

Won't watch again until CE goes, I really can't stand him. Matt was nice, and I'm sure Sabine was too, but I left the room for 30 seconds so I missed her!

APotterWithAHappyAtmosphere · 30/05/2016 09:29

Hard to judge after one episode, but it did feel very flat.

The studio audience did not seem that into it. Thinking back maybe they were the same level as before but CE needs more of a TGIF-level of enthusiasm to work against (or adjust his style not to depend on this)

MLB was very awkward in the studio but great in the VT clips. Definitely the high points, especially the Nomad.

They definitely should have used the opportunity to change a bit more - was weird having the same interview seats and the same phrasing of scripts. They could have scripted it more to suit CE but thrown in some of the older references.

Forced relationship between CE & MLB was inevitable so they could have overcome it by an initial chat (rather than the weird intro thing) - talking about cars they loved etc.

Maybe a third studio presenter is needed for the dynamic?

Guests were awful - couldn't they have got a couple of proper stars or people with personality. Maybe even a woman...

Sabine very good. More please.

Roussette · 30/05/2016 09:30

I watched last night Davros with the desire to stick a huge piece of elastoplast over CE's mouth. I think Matt can grow into this and my worry is, CE can only get worse, there's nowhere for him to go with it.

Did anyone else think the liive audience didn't look too wrapped up with it all? With careful editing, surely they could've show clips of people there who were laughing and looking like they were really enjoying the show. Lots looked just uncomortable and/or bored.

prettybird · 30/05/2016 09:44

Apart from Sabine, the only good best bit was "We got custody" when introducing the Stig piece Grin

Fontella · 30/05/2016 09:46

Utter shite. I can't stand Chris Evans anyway. Gave up listening to the Radio 2 breakfast show years ago due to his shouty CBeebies voice and the posse of simpering sidekicks.

However, I tried to set aside my preconceptions and take a look.

Wish I hadn't bothered.

The80sweregreat · 30/05/2016 09:51

I was a bit shocked at how much stayed the same - maybe they should have tried to make it a bit different. Not sure how, but trying to impersonate hasn't gone down well at all. Its been totally panned and I predict it will limp on and be quietly axed within the year.
I am sure CE will come up smelling of roses though, he usually does. The BBC seem a bit in love with him despite this and theres always the radio! ( and his own cars to mess around in too)

Roussette · 30/05/2016 09:56

No idea whatsoever why there is a love affair between the Beeb and CE. He looks like a botoxed Joe 90 and acts like a needy teenager.

HooseRice · 30/05/2016 10:00

I quite liked it. I couldn't stand Richard Hammond and Jezza was no longer funny.

In the interests of full disclosure I want to fuck his brains out fancy MLB a lot.

I'm not a CE fan but I have been more irritated by him than last night.

Sabine should have featured more.

BeckerLleytonNever · 30/05/2016 10:10

Sabine is the best.

CE is shouty ego man, too much mouth. Gives me headache.

MLB's lips are glued togethjer, had to put subtitles on to understandwhat he was saying. he was boooooring. looked bored and sleepy.

NO chemistry at all.

Not these guys faults though, the others were sacked/chose to leave.

im still fuming at Hammond and May. they could have stayed and carried on maybe with Sabine. their decision to leave for loyalty to a bully is Hmm.

and the Stig was part of 'that' gang, he doesn't suit this new format.

turned off by the time the stars in the car came on.

was just dismal.

HooseRice · 30/05/2016 10:45

O/T but has Gordon Ramsay had a shit ton of work done on his face? He looked different and caked in makeup.

Roussette · 30/05/2016 10:56

Yes, and his teeth looked worked over a lot. He's lost the huge channels on his face that were sort of him.

EleanorofProvence · 30/05/2016 11:09

Apparently they originally had Brad Pitt booked for Star in the Whatever it is Car but he couldn't make it. I thought it was a bit weird all in all - it wasn't that different from before but without the 'edge' that made it funny. I agree that Matt LB was alright but most of it was quite boring. The moon buggy thing was the best bit whereas the three wheeler skit was just tedious. I got tired of Chris Evans about 20 years ago - I was willing to give him a chance with this but just found him irritating.

RedToothBrush · 30/05/2016 11:09

Gordon Ramsey was told that he would not be able to get work in the US unless he had fillers in his chin.

Davros · 30/05/2016 11:44

Fillers in his chin - with someone's fist Grin

gingerhobo48 · 30/05/2016 12:09

I thought it was alright, not great , just alright.I thought MLB was good , CE, I don't really like and all he does is shouting (badly).Liked Sabine, which was a surprise as I didn't like her at all on the old TG. Can't stand GR, horrible, horrible man.Might watch next week.

SoleBizzz · 30/05/2016 12:36

Just watching the BBC Top Gear Extra Gear it's crap.

TrixieBernadette · 30/05/2016 13:58

When matts Robin died so early on they should have canned that bit of filming tbh.

SoleBizzz · 30/05/2016 14:28

I laughed out loud at Matt on the back of the two truck. Those huge fur gloves! I love Ssbine.
