Huh?

It's the only book I have ever started reading and failed to complete. I did watch last night and was enjoying it even if just for the costumes but then dh came in from work and it all went a bit bonkers in the house. I'll try it again on iplayer and see if I can get a handle on it. It looks beautiful.

I think I nodded off and missed the end - spent quite a long time trying to place one of the actors - have now realised it was James Norton. I am seriously drugged up on muscle relaxants at the moment and basically understood very little of what was going on.

Totally missed the incest bit - I may have to rewatch on iplayed when I'm in my right mind.

I also watched Sherlock earlier in the week and thought WTF is this all about.
Moral - if you want to understand Christmas telly just say NO to prescription medication kids. Grin

loopsylala · 04/01/2016 15:29

found the plot utterly confusing

LineyReborn · 04/01/2016 15:30

I think a lot of people haven't read (or finished) the book or seen previous screen adaptations, so MNHQ are going to delete 'spoilers', btw.

LittleMissGeneric · 04/01/2016 15:36

I started watching it, but am full of cold and was very tired after work as all the seasonal staff have finished, so it's very full on with minimal staff!

Anyway, I have set up a series link, and will try and watch the first episode again. It's one of those things you feel you should watch, as I've never even attempted the book!

Libitina · 04/01/2016 15:56

I thought the costumes were bizarre and the acting and storyline very poor. Not sure if it's the screenplay or the actual book itself.

hiccupgirl · 04/01/2016 15:59

I watched it but just ended up very confused though I haven't read the book. Too many similar looking soldiers in similar uniforms.

I was trying to work out whether the women were very cold in their Grecian inspired gowns at or the men very hot in their uniforms at the parties.

It's also apparently racy....didn't see anything particularly racy other than the suggested incest and even that was pretty tame.

Why have all these posts been deleted? Confused

I haven't seen the first ep yet, but can I mark my place? I'm really looking forward to it, and am glad that I now no longer have to read the book. Grin

I do like a bit of James Norton.

Helmetbymidnight · 04/01/2016 16:45

I enjoyed it but there were too many characters for me (damn Tolstoy) and inevitably it felt rushed/abridged.

What's with the suicidal guy? He annoyed me.
Pierre is a great character- I loved the turnabout from revolutionary to count. Thought Natasha was formless. Loved Rebecca front as ever.
Still not sure who the great love triangle is going to include - there's not much love yet...

ThomasRichard · 04/01/2016 17:05

OnlyLovers a few by the same poster were spam adverts for a witch doctor Hmm

KurriKurri as the whole of Sherlock was about him being off his head on drugs I'm not surprised you were confused!

hiccup the brothel/debauchery bit flashed a bit of nipple too.

ThomasRichard · 04/01/2016 17:06

I thought all of War & Peace was composed of multiple love triangles, IIRC.

hifi · 04/01/2016 17:10

lily James is pants, I cant take James nOrton seriously since i heard his real voice.
Otherwise I like it.

regenerationfez · 04/01/2016 17:12

Oh no I thought he was surprisingly hot! I'd better not listen to his voice it might ruin the effect!

LineyReborn · 04/01/2016 17:16

I'm afraid I don't rate Lily James, either. Very wooden.

BeccaMumsnet · 04/01/2016 17:22

Hi all - we've been zapping a few spoilers, but we can leave them up if everyone would prefer? We'd then add a spoiler warning to the title.

OnlyLovers · 04/01/2016 17:37

Thanks Thomas. Really??!? Grin

OnlyLovers · 04/01/2016 17:37

PS is James N's 'real' voice akin to his voice in Grantchester? Nowt wrong with it if so.

ThomasRichard · 04/01/2016 17:38

Becca yes please to spoilers with a warning. It's a bit tricky to discuss otherwise!

LineyReborn · 04/01/2016 17:41

What happened with Eastenders was that we had a thread WITH SPOILERS and one WITHOUT SPOILERS leading up to Xmas. I thought it worked very well.
