Anyone watching? All British actors appearing here...

OP posts:
LineyReborn · 06/01/2016 19:26

Although they won't now presumably as the thread title is amended.

So, Natasha and Pierre escape to

Andrewofgg · 06/01/2016 20:40

. . . the planet Jupiter. Obviously.

CeeBeeBee · 08/01/2016 23:26

First impressions: Lovely costumes, slow paced at the moment and clunky dialogue.
Shock at "Lucky Pierre" being uttered.

mudandmayhem01 · 10/01/2016 22:20

Much better tonight, getting into it now. Terrifying childbirth scene, the thought of facing childbirth when your own death was a very real possibility makes my blood run cold.

bigbadbarry · 10/01/2016 22:26

I agree, it found its feet tonight

thenightsky · 10/01/2016 22:29

I nearly gave up last week.

So glad I didn't. This week really perked up!

regenerationfez · 10/01/2016 22:49

Yes that hour flew by! Very good.

KurriKurri · 10/01/2016 23:04

Oh I nearly gave up after last week-so glad I didn't I am hooked now.I absolutely love Jim Broadbent, he is wonderful.

Helmetbymidnight · 11/01/2016 09:12

Yes, I enjoyed it too.

It is enjoyable. I don't think its brilliant, but I think it's very pleasant.
(faint praise!)

Poor old Pierre - can't he just get rid of her?!?!?

I loved the 'plain' girl. I was frightened she'd say yes to the horrible player/brother.

Jim Broadbent was brilliant, yes.

LineyReborn · 11/01/2016 09:20

Glad I gave it a second chance, purely for Jim Broadbent and Stephen Rea.

But I can't tell most of the soldiers apart.

Igneococcus · 11/01/2016 09:47

Does anyone know who plays the Tsar? I can't find it anywhere.

NatashaBolkonskaya · 11/01/2016 12:19

Does anyone know who plays the Tsar?

Ben LLoyd-Hughes

Strangely I couldn't find it on the War and Peace IMDB page, either.

Clawdy · 11/01/2016 12:32

Yes,that's odd about the Tsar actor.

Igneococcus · 11/01/2016 14:46

Thanks Natasha

Cotherstone · 11/01/2016 15:49

Absolutely loving it. Wonderfully acted (Stephen Rea is amazing) and looks spectacular.

Plus Tom Burke

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 11/01/2016 18:37

The Tsar looked like a very young Smithy from The Bill.

The acting from all concerned is terrific.

Igneococcus · 11/01/2016 18:55

I was dubious about Paul Dano as Pierre at first but I think he is doing very well. That challenge at the dinner was brilliantly acted.

regenerationfez · 11/01/2016 19:13

I love Paul Dano in this. He's just fantastic. I can't stop watching him. He's just what I thought Pierre would be like.

museumum · 11/01/2016 21:33

Can someone explain to me who the French woman in Maria's house is and what she's doing there?
Thanks.

Yseulte · 11/01/2016 21:56

I remembered Pierre as being large, but I may be confusing him with Levin from Anna Karenina. Apart from that I think Dano is very good.

This episode was better and felt more grounded in Russia.

I think the first episode tried to do too much in one go. It would have been better to introduce the audience to the different character groups one at a time, and only then introduce a party scene, and leave the war scenes til the end.

KurriKurri · 11/01/2016 22:41

The French woman (Mlle Bourienne) is Maria's companion - adopted into the Bolkonsky family as an orphan, she is very different in character to Maria.

midsomermurderess · 11/01/2016 23:11

Ben Lloyd-Hughes' brother is Henry who played Ralph in Indian Summers.

loveitvmonkey · 11/01/2016 23:23

Ysedulte, Pierre was large in the book, also much cooler in his demeanor than the actor whose every emotion shows on his face, but the actor is good, in his own slunt on Pierre.

The film is good but ridiculously sketchy compared to the book (don't blame them, the book's SO detailed). The Bolkonsky looking at the sky scene takes a lot of space in the book, I wonder whether people who didn't read even took it as significant?

Who is in the role of Napoleon? liking the actor!

loveitvmonkey · 11/01/2016 23:27

Sorry Yseulte, for misspelling.

Oh and Helene is miscast imo, supposed to be a blonde beauty, lazy and cool/arrogant, here she is too lively/flirty.
