First impressions: Lovely costumes, slow paced at the moment and clunky dialogue.
at "Lucky Pierre" being uttered.

Much better tonight, getting into it now. Terrifying childbirth scene, the thought of facing childbirth when your own death was a very real possibility makes my blood run cold.

I loved the 'plain' girl. I was frightened she'd say yes to the horrible player/brother.

Jim Broadbent was brilliant, yes.

Glad I gave it a second chance, purely for Jim Broadbent and Stephen Rea.

But I can't tell most of the soldiers apart.

The Tsar looked like a very young Smithy from The Bill.

The acting from all concerned is terrific.

I was dubious about Paul Dano as Pierre at first but I think he is doing very well. That challenge at the dinner was brilliantly acted.

I love Paul Dano in this. He's just fantastic. I can't stop watching him. He's just what I thought Pierre would be like.

Can someone explain to me who the French woman in Maria's house is and what she's doing there?

I remembered Pierre as being large, but I may be confusing him with Levin from Anna Karenina. Apart from that I think Dano is very good.

This episode was better and felt more grounded in Russia.

I think the first episode tried to do too much in one go. It would have been better to introduce the audience to the different character groups one at a time, and only then introduce a party scene, and leave the war scenes til the end.

The French woman (Mlle Bourienne) is Maria's companion - adopted into the Bolkonsky family as an orphan, she is very different in character to Maria.

Ben Lloyd-Hughes' brother is Henry who played Ralph in Indian Summers.

Ysedulte, Pierre was large in the book, also much cooler in his demeanor than the actor whose every emotion shows on his face, but the actor is good, in his own slunt on Pierre.

The film is good but ridiculously sketchy compared to the book (don't blame them, the book's SO detailed). The Bolkonsky looking at the sky scene takes a lot of space in the book, I wonder whether people who didn't read even took it as significant?

Who is in the role of Napoleon? liking the actor!

Oh and Helene is miscast imo, supposed to be a blonde beauty, lazy and cool/arrogant, here she is too lively/flirty.
