I dislike DVO, she had dance training. If they chose people that were all as bad as Ann Widdicombe the audience would switch off., so you have to have a range of abilities. Zoe ball had dance training, but i didnt mind her. I dont care that Jay did dance as a teen, a lot of performers and singers do. Its a tough thing to learn i can imagine.
I think Anton should retire from the show next year, he would make a good judge. I like him, but its true, if he had been a woman she would have gone by now!

Talking of DVO I would love to see Lee Mead on SCD.

Karl Pilkington was just on TV saying he was asked this year. And Sarah Hadland who says she's been asked 3 times.

Jay has been quite open about his dance experience

"A lot of people won’t know that I’m the only member of The Wanted that had danced beforehand at a college in Nottingham but I did a lot of contemporary dance so I’m looking forward to now learning different types of dance that I’ve never done before."

I'd say he definitely learnt to jive before as it's not specifically a Latin & Ballroom dance, is it? But all the better for is to watch. Must have watched it about 20 times now.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 11/10/2015 10:28

It was really really good. The only thing that worries me slightly now is can he make everything else look as good? Jive is quite different to the other nine.

Same article re Georgia. I liked her rumba with Giovanni last night.

"I’m going to be a bit rusty for starters so I will be generous and give myself 6 out of 10 so then there’s room to improve," she said. "I used to dance when I was younger and used to go to dance school to do hip-hop and street dance which is massively different to ballroom.

"I used to freestyle too so the more precise and technical dancing is going to be quite difficult."

I am looking forward to seeing Jay do a free style contemporary lyrical show dance in the final!
It would be spectacular.

Wonder how he will do in the notoriously difficult for men RUMBA?

The80sweregreat · 11/10/2015 11:12

Rumba stumps all of the celebs. Horrible dance, especially if they are not getting on with their partner! Or dont want the sexy vibe.. It just feels sleazy to me.

The Rhumba is always awful no matter who does it ridiculous dance

Report

Len wants a romantic Rumba with rippling/flowing snake hips/movements which I think Jay will produce, rather than the earthy sexy style with dramatic posing and dynamic movements.

2 different styles of Rumba personified by the best 2 profi female Latin dancers Leunis and Yulia and is a matter of personal taste for the judges.

Can someone cleverer than me do links of these 2?

Report
Mrsjayy · 11/10/2015 11:40

Urm i will pass on the link im rubbish the rhumba just doesnt rock my boat. . Dd posted the you tube of the jive with a "sigh" i heart him Grin

Two demo clips, and a competition rumba clip.

Joanna and Michael -

Ricardo and Yulia -

- you can see how much more aggressive Joanna and Michael look.

I'm not a massive fan of the rumba either, my favourite one (on SCD) is Rachel Stevens and Vincent.
They believed in it, and truly sold it, I think that was the difference.

I got the impression that Jay was a complete newbie when he isn't and he seemed to being sold as the "nervous young man who's only done boy band type shuffling about". It's just disappointing.

Yeah, I feel like a bit of a mug too.

I've been reading this morning that he's done 6 bloody years of stage/dance school and has been training all summer. Good grief.

Here was I getting all excited by this wee mortified lad who unexpectedly had a dance savant hidden within.

Turns out he was good at spins as he's been doing them for years!

Katie D's manic grinning is beginning to get on my nerves. So false.

Yes, the spins! Way too good.

I find it interesting that even amongst the posters on this thread it wasn't mentioned before whereas there have been regular comments about Helen's ballet and I think jokey comments about how much private tuition PA had before filming started :)

As I said, I'm not particularly fussed about whether they've had prior dance experience or training, just be up front about it.

I must have missed Jay being up front on Strictly about his dance experience. It's not the impression I got.

The Jive was still fantastic though. :)

Poor kirsty as a dog! I would have hated that.

Quite a few people get asked to do Strictly and turn it down. I know that Richard Madley has been asked a few times, and I really wish he'd give it a go because it would be a scream watching him try to dance.

I am also curious to know whether Tristran meant to pull Jamelia hair but do it so quick that no-one noticed but instead found his hand entangled in it :s

I think I'd have to miss a season if Madeley was on it tbh. Has DoD had botox?

Katie - such a shame that Anton let her down with the routine and his dancing as she has so much potential. Even his comment "It's isn't really Katie's fault" - it isn't in ANY WAY Katie's fault!! Past his sell by date which is a shame as he brings humour to the show.
Daniel - I thought he was fine. There's no way he was ever going to be able to replicate the sexiness of John Travolta - in the same way that Anton wouldn't be able to - so I thought the jokey side he showed worked well. He always reacts so well to the comments from the judges and I love how positive Craig is being about him.
Jamelia - considering the pop background, she really isn't good is she? I don't think Tristan meant to pull her hair. When will he get a decent partner?
Peter - loved Janette's hairstyle and dress. He was a bit stompy. I'm sure he was put out that Darcey called Jay the coolest man in the competition:)
Jay - for once it doesn't bother me that he has previous dance experience. Such a fantastic routine helped by dancing to the best music of the night. And he seems like a good guy who concentrates on his partner more than selling himself to the audience.
Anita - seems to be able to do any sort of dance.
Jeremy - another infectious routine and it was fun to see his brother.
Carol - better performance but the gulf between those who can dance and the rest gets wider each week.
Anthony - severely hampered by only being able to dance with one hand and lucky that it's not commented on more by the judges. Seems a nice guy though.
Kirsty - hard to warm to her and she doesn't seem to have a great rapport with Brendan, at least not in the way that Kellie and Ainsley get on with their partners. As someone else said, another Victoria Pendleton.
Ainslie- another fun routine. I love their partnership.
Kellie - not my favourite dance of theirs but I like how well they get on.
Helen - great routine but it's somehow off-putting how much she looks like a doll.

Dance off - definitely Jamelia and maybe Kirsty or Anthony.

ppeatfruit - going back to the other thread and the DM link about Jeremy Vine - I agree, hopefully he was having a bad day. I admire your refusal to look at DM links. I share your disdain for the paper but sometimes get sucked in to looking at articles from the sidebar of shame :)

Forgot Georgia - I thought she was great in a notoriously tough dance and criminally undermarked as she was last week. Thought the dress was a bit OTT as 8 year old dd is a fan of hers.

Hello all, sorry I've been missing so far this season!

Thoughts on last night:

  • Glad Len pulled up several dancers on lack of actual dance content. He has to do it every year either over content or lifts - when will they learn?!
  • PA was over-marked - very bad posture which is the essence of Paso
  • Jay was very good, though I still think Jill Halfpenny's was better Grin

CaveMum - I'm no expert but even I spotted the lack of content in Katie's dance. Anton just seemed to be twirling her in and out. Was Georgia's so lacking in content to deserve those scores? Given how difficult the rumba is and how at ease she seemed to be - compared to others we've seen - the comments seemed a bit tough?
