Kate said her rich parents are pleased which I interpreted as them helping their daughter and him. He also gets to shag a hot 23 year old so I don't think he's done too badly.

Also, bratty Kate will be a nightmare and expect him to provide, just like Daddy always did.

HugoBear · 07/10/2015 22:20

Did no-one else notice that Tom was leering over a cartoon woman in his comic at the end, getting ready to perpetuate the cycle for yet another generation?

ScrambledSmegs · 07/10/2015 22:20

She got him to leave. That was what she wanted. It also looks like she got her friends, neighbours and son on her side and appreciating her (finally!). Shame it took an assault to do that though.

Simon and Kate didn't look particularly happy to me in that final scene.

I noticed the picture, too. Poor Tom.

It needed Simon, for once, to look back at them I think. He just didn't show enough - or any - remorse. But perhaps that's true to life Confused

yes, i saw that hugo. kind of depressing

BathtimeFunkster · 07/10/2015 22:24

The characters weren't remotely consistent or believable between episodes, a new series would be a stretch.

By series 2 Gemma will be a homeopath working in partnership with Ros and Anna who are an aromatherapist and a refloxogist respectively.

This time she starts twisting her earrings madly when she sees her new boyfriend, the hypochondriac from series 1 she has cured with homeopathy, buying a rope, a spade, and a butcher's knife and thinks he might be lying about not being a serial killer.

CremeEggThief · 07/10/2015 22:24

Yes, that's what's annoying me so much, Sucking. He should be broken-hearted at losing his son, but he just seems able to brush him off and get on with his new start in London.

FloraDiesEarly · 07/10/2015 22:25

Yes there was a nice double standard from Tom - Kate was a slut as she slept with several people, but because Gemma worked a lot and didn't make Simon happy, it was fine for him to go fuck someone else. I know he was an angry, upset 12 year old, but still...

iwantgin · 07/10/2015 22:25

Hmmmm. Ithink it was a good ending as it did tie everything up. Am amazed that Kate would want to settle with man who could knock out his wife, but hey.

ENtertainmentAppreciated · 07/10/2015 22:26

There was no plot point to the alcoholic retired doctor.

Million

ellenanora5 · 07/10/2015 22:26

Oh I don't know how I feel, I was all over the place watching it, she did get her revenge but her son paid a hefty old price for it, they were both using him to get at each other.

I still don't get the point of Roz, so all that weird face making and pretending she knew nothing but then admitting she knew everything but was just trying to keep everyone happy, nope sorry, not buying it, she deserved a slap for not telling Gemma as soon as she knew about the affair.

Well Kate has created a vacancy anyway, it won't be long until he fills the mistress role, then she'll be sorry.

I enjoyed the series but I'm not sure it could warrant another one.

Thanks so much to you all for a fabulous two threads, who knew it would create such fantastic theories, stories and what ifs Grin

And to the poster who said they were having contractions, hope you are ok and let us know how you get on Smile best of luck on your new arrival.

Now for the next bbc drama, let the threads commence Grin

Also disappointed that Ros didn't get both barrels. She was up to her ears in the whole thing & came out of it smelling of roses.

SuckingEggs · 07/10/2015 22:29

I mean - so what if Tom looks at girls? I thought that was a bit clumsy.

PlayingSolitaire · 07/10/2015 22:29

So tonight I learnt that if you go to work, your children will hate and resent you.

And that all men sleep around and all boys will grow up to sleep around too.

So that is a cheerful thought [ confused]

OneMoreForExtra · 07/10/2015 22:30

I don't see this as Gemma being perfect and winning, and Simon getting his comeuppance. She was put under horrible pressure and it brought out the worst of ruthlessness in her, starting with honey entrapments and two lots of blackmail, and culminating in using her child as a weapon, and some weird mental cruelty trap to get Simon to hit her, to win the restraining order. Slight sweetener at the end suggesting that she'd woken up to the need to be nicer to her son, and balance that with her work - agree the message wasn't all that subtle! I thought Simon's lifetime of repentance for a moment of lashing out and quite liking lying in the bed he'd made was pretty true to life.

BrandNewAndImproved · 07/10/2015 22:32

I really think she planned on him loosing control and hitting her. The way she cut her hair, the blood and how she carried on I think it was planned out.

amillionusernameslater · 07/10/2015 22:32

I thought the complaint was from Carly's boyfriend about the cigarette burn?

ChiefInspectorBarnaby · 07/10/2015 22:32

Amazing series.
Anti climatic ending.
Feel let down on a personal level.
Sad.

McButtonwillow · 07/10/2015 22:33

I loved the ending, she finds herself again and it's her and Tom together, stronger then ever. Beautifully acted and I love Suranne Jones more then ever.

I'm glad the ending was more subtle without any huge dramatic twists, I really don't think it needed it.

HortonWho · 07/10/2015 22:34

Oh FFS bbc! What the fuck with he Hollywood ending rewrite because your target audience hated it and you recut it?

So obvious the ending was exactly to the letter what the nice divorce lawyer said it was - you get the family house and children and the wife thinks she's won but no... The men sail away into the sunset and get to start over with a new wife and new family.

Exactly what happened.

And then they tack on her rushing to save some random's life, to make a bit of open ended moment ready for single momma season two.

What a let down.

MajesticWhine · 07/10/2015 22:35

I don't think she actually planned on him hitting her. She was desperately trying to find a way for him to be hurt, for him to give a shit about what he'd done. She realised that Tom was the only way.
