Ros was a red herring.

I still enjoyed it but was really disappointed Simon showed no remorse. People kid themselves, I suppose. It was awful to watch when he went with Kate after the dinner party. Poor Gemma.

I think this was a lesson in carrying on the best you can being the best revenge. She only kept what was hers, so she didn't win. He lost - but he probably doesn't think he has!

pinkfrocks · 07/10/2015 22:37

It was dire. I watched hoping for something good but it was laid on with a sledgehammer, she came over as mentally deranged, and not fit to have custody of a child, or be a GP. The poor child was caught in the midst of parents who could not be civil to each other and Gemma came over as the worst of all. Just not subtle or clever in any way.

TheImminentGin · 07/10/2015 22:39

I came away feeling disappointed really. Nasty taste in mouth.

Suranne was brilliant though. Love her.

SuckingEggs · 07/10/2015 22:41

Simon looked so fucking smug.

Clawdy · 07/10/2015 22:42

Unfeasibly happy ending for all of them really. The problem for me was that Gemma was such an unsympathetic character that I found myself not caring about her. None of the characters were likeable, not even the young son.

southeastdweller · 07/10/2015 22:45

The big mistake from the writer was not exploring Gemma's backstory - I never felt like I 'knew' her. Maybe it'll be different in the second series if there is one - I can imagine the BBC will want one given the ratings for the first series.

DragonsCanHop · 07/10/2015 22:47

I don't think Gemma planned on Tom hitting her. She wanted him to feel the hurt she was feeling and even after taking him to the dinner party he still didn't get it so she found something that would.

I cried at the ending but not because Tom & Kate drove off into a happy sunset. That girl is pregnant with a cheating, gambling, potential abuser and that is now her future at 23.

Where as Gemma has a fresh start with everything and has financial security (one of the main factors of horrible relationships with cheats staying together imo) that fresh start would be scary.

TheCraicDealer · 07/10/2015 22:48

What was the point in Jack after all that? I thought she was going to wheel him out at the end too. And she was mean to him in the last episode with the grief competition.

Hullygully · 07/10/2015 22:48

It was written by a man.

That is all.

BathtimeFunkster · 07/10/2015 22:50

I can imagine the BBC will want one given the ratings for the first series.

How much of that was inherited from Bake Off, though?

That was a choice slot they got.

TheCraicDealer · 07/10/2015 22:51

I think that's right about her back story, it was built up to be really mysterious and then they didn't go anywhere with it. I suppose they couldn't have her parents in it because most women would tell their mum and then she would tell the cheating husband and threaten bodily harm, thereby giving the game away or is that just my mum

Hullygully · 07/10/2015 22:52

The whole thing was utterly ridiculous.

BathtimeFunkster · 07/10/2015 22:52

What was the point in Jack after all that?

I think he was written to be the person who said there was no point in winning.

DickDewy · 07/10/2015 22:54

That was utter shite - I can't believe we sat through it.

Duckdeamon · 07/10/2015 22:57

Nasty, misogynistic writing, especially how Gemma treated her son and pretended to have killed him.

Elendon · 07/10/2015 22:57

Well I enjoyed the whole series and thought the ending was pretty much like life really. Who knows how things will turn out for any of them? Gemma said that it was 14 years of her life with a bastard, when she could have been with someone better (rightly so!).

And it was said up thread that Kate went off with Tom because that's what people who fall for each other do - they fail to see what we from the outside see.

I thought it was written from a male perspective though.

Daisychain5 · 07/10/2015 22:58

A better and more realistic ending would have been to for her to see the pregnant (smug) girlfriend, and then catch sight of her ex with another woman.....vacancy created etc

Duckdeamon · 07/10/2015 22:58

As if parents would encourage and fund a move away for their pregnant daughter with someone who had battered his wife.

Hullygully · 07/10/2015 22:58

yep

men writing women

always so revealing

Cloudcuckoo50 · 07/10/2015 23:00

Great ending. Gemma got what she wanted given the circumstances: her son, her house, the choice to have her job back and her professional respect restored. I loved how proud Tom looked when Gemma was carrying out the CPR. They're going to be OK.

In contrast Simon has lost everything and now has a life that he never would have chosen. I don't believe he was ever going to leave Gemma for Kate if it hadn't been forced. The look of regret and fondness he shot accross at Tom and Gemma spoke volumes. I don't think their new life in London will go well.

I think that Gemma played a very clever hand but the fact that Tom had to witness so much unpleasantness and have his respect for his father shattered is terrible.

Hullygully · 07/10/2015 23:01

your name is most apt cloudcuckoo

BathtimeFunkster · 07/10/2015 23:02

I don't think Kate's parents are funding anything.

I took it that they were glad they were leaving town, not that they supported the relationship.
