Anyone watching this, I like Suranne Jones so I'm hoping it's good, but she is one paranoid woman, maybe she has good reasons, we'll wait and see Smile

I am thinking that we're all reading far to much into it. I don't think there is any sub plots (sadly). I think it's just a straightforward affair/cheating/get back together/ revenge story.

PalcumTowder · 24/09/2015 20:13

I'll be so frustrated if it's a get back together story.

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/09/2015 21:10

Oh Kate's dad might be the invester - thought you meant Gemma dad -duh - blonde Wink

MudCity · 24/09/2015 21:40

Agree Palcum Gemma is definitely odd...I wouldn't cross her...but then, I guess, we are all a mixture of good and bad...she definitely is.

I can't wait for the revenge to start. I'm psyching myself up for Simon being buried under his new property development while Gemma takes over the project, aided by accountant neighbour, lawyer, Carly et al. I shall be so disappointed if he doesn't get his come-uppance.

Ros...desperate to be liked by anyone but that makes her easy to manipulate. Gemma knows this and can use this to her advantage. She doesn't have a life of her own, just tags herself onto other people.

Clawdy · 24/09/2015 22:39

It's becoming more unbelievable and also more boring. The only bit that seemed real was the scene where Simon told his son that his granny had died, that was really well done.

MorrisZapp · 24/09/2015 22:54

I would totally shag that accountant. Proper filth he is.

But Simon, it's been bugging me for weeks now who he looks like. It came to me last night.

Griff.

Rhys.

Jones.

What with Suranne looking so much like Maureen Lipman I'm just picturing the pair of them in beige, chummily bickering about the waterways of Humberside.

OutToGetYou · 24/09/2015 22:55

Could she have given the mother the pills she took from the drunk ex GP? She did say to the mother she would 'work something out'.

I don't think she's a very good actress and I loathe all those close up camera shots of people's eyes, lips etc. Esp when she was with Neil in the restaurant, there was no chemistry, bad acting, very wooden.

MorrisZapp · 24/09/2015 23:04

I thought it was ridiculous that the young GP guy would tell Simon airily what was in his own mothers suicide note. Surely the note would have been given straight to him. I'd have punched his smug face.

MajesticWhine · 24/09/2015 23:05

Yes, agree the chemistry with Neil and the acting in general was a bit dubious. SJ is still lovely though and good to watch. I thought she was going to help the MIL to die, but she seemed so busy with other things (like fucking the accountant) that I'm not sure if she had time to sort it out, also, why the viewer would have been kept in the dark about that, when the viewer is given insight into her other schemes?

MyBoysAreFab · 24/09/2015 23:47

Agree with Solitaire - it feels like there is a lot of tension and unspoken sub plots but have a feeling we will be disappointed and that the outcome will be nothing like as exciting as some of those mooted on here.

LovelyFriend · 24/09/2015 23:58

Perhaps the bike accident was to illustrate that the divorce lawyer is also "other". He is not in or part of the town. She had to travel out of the "village" to meet with him - and it's dangerous out there.

I don't need to see any more shots of Gemma fiddling with her fucking earrings. Enough!

LovelyFriend · 25/09/2015 00:02

There was a "penny dropping" sideways glance on Gemmas face when Roz was talking about "all we had to do was each other". Mentally G added Ros to "people who have fucked Simon" spreadsheet.

I think Ros will be central to the dénouement but then I've had a sneak peek at cast list on imdb.

If medea is an influence, plus post modernist deconstruction of capitalism v traditional values as seems to be a marker of Bartlett's work (hadn't realised he was THAT Bartlett) then Simon will definitely be getting his comeuppance. But Gemma won't escape either. Bearing in mind the initial idea/writing would have started 2-3 years ago and news items then showed a spate of separated dads killing their kids and then committing suicide to punish their exes I wonder if that's where we'll end up?

Ros killing tom?

Gemma has potentially not only robbed Ros of Simon but of an entire lifestyle, nice house, family, good career (remember Gemma usurped Ros as a newbie at work and has become senior partner).

Seems ep 4 will be focussing on Kate's family and possibly jacks (now sober and a reliable witness) return.

Rollergirl1 · 25/09/2015 07:03

People do know that Simon is played by Bertie Carvel? Of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell fame? I think he is a great actor. He was universally loved as Jonathan Strange so it is a credit to his acting that he has made himself so unlikeable in Simon.

There are lots and lots of holes for me. How long have they meant to have been there? Accountant neighbour said that he has wanted her for 5 years. But then she said later on that she arrived when she was pregnant. Their son has to be around 11 so at least that long?

Then the girl that is pretending to be pregnant told Kate that she had just moved to the area. But she works in the pub that is next door to Kate's parents restaurant so I'm sure they would have seen each other before?

southeastdweller · 25/09/2015 07:35

He was also Miss Trunchbull in the musical of Matilda.

thunderbird69 · 25/09/2015 09:43

Disappointing that there were no clever twists in this week's episode.

I certainly believe that Gemma gave her MIL the tablets, that's why she asked to see her and they talked about how everything would pan out. It was another on the list of her 'good deeds'

I also think the investor is Kate's dad. If the affair becomes public knowledge then he will pull out of investing.

Not sure why the accountant's wife looked so shaken to see Gemma in her house, as it has been stated that they are good friends?

Simon reminds me a lot of someone I know, with mannerisms and the way he talks. Not in a good way.

MajesticWhine · 25/09/2015 10:08

Gemma will find out that Whitestone is Kate's dad, that will put her off exposing the affair, because if Simon loses everything, then so does she. So she will have to choose between losing everything and carrying on playing happy families while Simon carries on with Kate. She might also lose her job because her misconduct comes to light.

ThoseAwfulCurtains · 25/09/2015 10:30

I was wondering that too. About the accountant's wife. But then he's fancied her for 5 years and the wife might be a frequenter of the Relationships board and knows the signs. Maybe he's had mentionitis, all the self touching flirty when he sees Gemma etc But that's not been shown in the prog.

WickedWax · 25/09/2015 10:41

I think I'm enjoying everyone's theories more than the actual programme Grin

Greengardenpixie · 25/09/2015 10:55

I think its all a huge plot to discredit her hence the reviews. I think that they are all making her paranoid and she will end up losing everything and in the loony bin. :)

thunderbird69 · 25/09/2015 10:56

Was it mentioned what exactly Gemma had done for Susie Parks? In the 1st episode when she was raving about how great she was and invited her to the restaurant.
Was that another of her helping but unethical acts?

Greengardenpixie · 25/09/2015 10:58

This cant end well for the viewer. There are way too many discrepencies in the story line. No idea how any of them are going to be answered!

LovelyFriend · 25/09/2015 12:28

Not sure why the accountant's wife looked so shaken to see Gemma in her house
She probably knows he is a philanderer and was shocked to see that he has potentially started shagging around so close to "home" and with her "friend"

CheekyMaleekey · 25/09/2015 13:59

Or the Accountant's wife knew that Simon doesn't discuss his dodgy finances with Gemma, so was surprised to see all the files out and open.
