OK, after freaking the bejaysus out of me with the weird trailer / advert I am intrigued and looking forward to giving this programme a viewing.

(I will have to record and watch later as I will be watching Messrs Strange and Norrell.)

Anyone else looking forward to it and hoping it lives up to the hype?

Leo must be able to eat/drink - they found food & water in his backpack that he left in the car - that's how they knew the synths were being protected by a human.

qazxc · 13/07/2015 13:53

Laura's objection to Anita was how confusing/damaging to them mentally it would be. Maybe Tom was a synth bought in to be her brother/playmate when she was little. She thought he was real and only found out when parents died or he got taken away for some reason?

midnightvelvetPart2 · 13/07/2015 13:53

I was shouting at Leo last night 'LET MATTIE HELP' as it was fairly obvious she could do it, it was just his arrogance that got in the way.

qazxc · 13/07/2015 13:56

Why not let her help, it's not like he had anything to lose?

MajesticWhine · 13/07/2015 13:59

Yes. I found it a bit hard to believe that he would a) not let Mattie have a go and b) just let Anita go like that. I also found it hard to believe that Toby would fess up to the shagging just to save his father's ass. Does anyone know a young teenager who is that noble and prepared to humiliate himself? But believable or not, it's still very entertaining.

AGnu · 13/07/2015 14:23

He couldn't possibly let Mattie help because he's a super-human cyborg with arrogance issues! Wink

Maj I don't think it was so much about saving his dad, more protecting his mum & trying to keep his family together.

firesidechat · 13/07/2015 14:23

None of it is remotely believable, but we are hooked now. I hope it stays as good as it has been so far and that it has a satisfying ending. Is it a one off series?

Synths being seen as far game for sex makes me a bit uncomfortable. I know it's probably an inevitable aspect of having human like machines, but it still makes me wince a bit. In a small way it reminds me of slave owners and their black slaves. They took advantage of them because they were seen as less than human and it didn't matter how you abused them. Not nice.

qazxc · 13/07/2015 15:11

Maybe Leo twigged that the adult mode had been used and would rather let Mia/Anita go than her realize she'd been raped?

BitOfFun · 13/07/2015 15:19

I thought the speech made at the We Are People rally was really interesting. Putting aside the obviously reactionary element which draw parallels with anti-immigration movements, I thought the point about the creation of synths diminishing our own humanity was a good one.

Gruach · 13/07/2015 17:07

I would love it if Tom does turn out to be (or connected to) Leo. Would be very neat.

Excellent acting from Toby when the truth dawned on him. (Is his littler sister really called Sophie? They clearly didn't consult MN on baby names. (Too rhyming.))

I do hope they'll make more pertinent use of Laura's lawyerly skills.

And I'm almost praying that it's not Odi lying incinerated on the lab table.

Is Max the skinny one?

Ellle · 13/07/2015 17:10

I think Anita was puzzled that Leo had not been able to find the core for Mia the way she had, and became suspicious. As soon as she got home, she checked it out (Adult mode, high security activated) and realised that this was the reason Leo couldn't get to the inner core of Mia, and that someone had messed up with Anita activating this adult mode.

Not sure if Leo also realised about the Adult mode being activated and its implication.

I don't think Anita retreated because of what the dad had done to her. I think is just a consequence of activating the adult mode, more extra security needed, special password, etc.

I have no idea who Tom could be. I'm not sure about the theory of Leo being Tom. That would make Laura the daughter of David Elster (creator of the synths), and being someone so famous there would have been a comment about it already from her husband or children. Unless she is hiding the fact that she is the daughter of David Elster.

I think Anita (Mia) tried to save Leo from drowning, but I don't think Laura & Tom were involved in that. I don't know who this Tom is, and cannot understand why Laura didn't open up to her husband from the beginning and tell him the truth about this Tom.

YeOldTrout · 13/07/2015 17:53

Is Max the synth that hangs with Leo? I also couldn't get over the bulgy eyes at first but now I like him hugely. He's the one who exudes the most kindness.

Ulysses · 13/07/2015 19:02

Yes, Max is with Leo. In the first episode Leo said he was different from the rest of the other sentient Synths and was unable to look after himself, which makes the decision to leave him on his own all the more sad.

I don't think Tom's got anything to do with the Elster's either. It would seem too way convenient, but I've no idea why Laura has been keeping him a secret from her family. I think whatever it is, needs to explain her almost paranoid level reaction to Anita in the household and why she sees herself failing as a mother.

I'm really enjoying the moral conundrums the show is presenting. It's a shame that there are only 3 more episodes to go and I hope there's a second series.

Italiangreyhound · 13/07/2015 22:38

qazxc brilliant guess.

Gruach · 13/07/2015 22:48

But she's made two guesses!

TweeBee · 14/07/2015 00:25

Finally caught up with this earlier.
I think that Laura's dad was the other scientist who worked with Elster and the mumbling man. Tom was a synth that they had made experimentally but her dad fell out with Elster when he wanted to develop conscious synths and Tom was given back with the dad giving her lots of warnings about synths. She hadn't told her hubby because she's embarrassed that a synth was one of her childhood friends.
I did think that Tom was her brother or a close friend but then surely she would have talked about him.
I was surprised the husband owned up.
What do you think Niska will do? What happened to Odi?
There are still so many questions. If we don't find out about Tom next week I'll scream!

Rummikub · 14/07/2015 01:10

I like your theory tweebee. It would explain Laura's reaction and why Tom isn't known to her husband.

Furball · 14/07/2015 03:41

See I'm veering towards the 3rd bloke in the Elster/ George history is Professor Edwin Hobb? and hence why he knows so much about them and why he has such interest? and so protective of Fred.

I don't think Fred is dead.

I also think that the detective partner lady Karen Voss is ridiculous with eating. I can sort of understand Hmm the bag for a meal etc, but this week she nicked one of Nick Drummonds chips which is a step toooo far.

I have no idea who Tom is

Furball · 14/07/2015 06:34

Also why has Anita carrying Sophie in night suddenly stopped?

Ulysses · 14/07/2015 06:35

Yes, it's Hobb who was in the photo with Dr Millican. She seems to have recognised him, possibly from the smash club. I think Hobb let Fred go so that he can lead them back to the other sentient synths.

Ulysses · 14/07/2015 06:37

I mean Niska recognised him in the photo with Dr Millican.

TweeBee · 14/07/2015 07:13

Oh I haven't been paying enough attention!
I don't think Fred is dead either. I wondered if the man who came in to see what had happened was a synth too, he seemed very upset at what had happened.
Furball, I think she stole the chip for extra realism, it's the sort of thing a human would do.

firesidechat · 14/07/2015 07:52

I don't think Fred is dead either. I wondered if the man who came in to see what had happened was a synth too, he seemed very upset at what had happened.

I thought he was upset that the professor was supposed to destroy Fred as a living thing, not set fire to his body (or whatever he did). I imagine a synth body is very similar to a human one and the upset man was bothered by having a charred corpse on the table. It was an unnecessary move if you wanted to destroy Fred, but not if you wanted to cover up the fact that you hadn't in fact killed him.

firesidechat · 14/07/2015 07:56

I also thought that the man in the photo was Professor Hobb. Neskia did seem to recognise him, but maybe she would be familiar with Laura's dad in some way. I do like your theory Twee and hope at least some of it is right.

firesidechat · 14/07/2015 07:57
